It gives me great sadness to write this post but we have been attacked this week, on our Facebook organising group by someone who claims to be a feminist and an ally to our cause. They chose to leak some screenshots to a Twitter troll (outing our members) and make a ridiculous allegation against us and Dr Nic in a thread on here and has slipped through our clean-up of our online group.

They are now threatening police action against high profile members of our group unless we prostrate ourselves to her bullying. @Sweary has a great response to that: the ever eloquent G F* Y! (starred to prevent deletion! ahem).

As we don't know who they are and don't know how to stop them the only option we have is to burn the group. This loses us so many allies, who have supported our actions wholeheartedly since that first day meeting wiht my local swimming pool and it breaks my heart. As we met on MN FWR I hope that most of you are still here and see this. We really didn't want to lose you - and you were as important as those of us out there getting on with the activism.

That this has happened in the run up to the consultation being launched, a time when we really should have our attentions and activities focussed elsewhere is ridiculous. This person has chosen to pursue a personal vendetta at a time when we should be pulling together and building on the success #ManFriday has had so far.

#ManFriday will keep fighting for the rights, safety, privacy and dignity of women and girls. We aren't going away but for the security of our members, we have to use alternative platforms to the Facebook group for organising our activism. Our website, Twitter feed etc. will still be up and running (come & get a t-shirt Wink)

Please keep up with the #randomactsofmanliness and keep taking up space on Fridays. Or any day come to that.

Look, talking about someone in a private space is not a hate crime, it might be distasteful, and unpleasant, but sometimes people need to let off steam, and that's not a crime

No it isn't but what seems to have been glossed over is how this came to the attention of the person being talked about.

As far as I can make sense of this-

  1. There had been concerns over Person A for some time.
  2. Person A was discussed in private conversations in a medium capable of being screensaved.
  3. Someone, Person B, released the screenshots referring to Person A.
  4. Person A and the poster called southfields saw them. Kilgore Sprout might have as well.
  5. Someone then released a list of all members.
6 Someone on Twitter is saying it was not Person A who released the names.

What isn't clear to me is how step 3 happened. It should not have happened and it was a breach of confidence but who was in a position to make screenshots of this private communication? It presumably wasn't Person A.

OfSpartacus · 02/07/2018 13:27

Two fairly obvious possibilities Lass

  1. Person A made a Facebook account under a false profile and used it to join the Facebook group and access the information.

  2. Person B, a friend or acquaintance of person A and was part of the group took the screenshots and list and passed them to person A.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 02/07/2018 13:28

Person A and Person B are the same person, and realised that their screenshots to Kilgore led people straight back to themselves and then pretended that neither Person A or B is anything to do with them.

LassWiADelicateAir · 02/07/2018 13:44

Yes I get that but Person B presumably was part of the core inner Man Friday group discussing Person A.

On your scenario TellsEveryoneRealFacts the person being talked about behind their back would have had to be part of the group talking about her. That is either a bit of a blinder to play or rather lax of the group discussing her.

Person A btw is easy to identify from references on the Man Friday threads and Kilgore Sprout's twitter.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 02/07/2018 14:05

With people that have loads of 'names' it is hard to research each and every one...

Yep they must have been part of the group. All this was explained in the first post. I don't really understand the confusion?

With people that have loads of 'names' it is hard to research each and every one..

If i was going to talk negatively about someone known to be difficult and of whom I had concerns about behind their back I think I'd make sure I was doing this face to face or in personal emails or texts with individuals I knew in real life.

The identity of the person being talked about was known. I think it was pretty lax of the organisers of MF to discuss her and their concerns about her with anyone they didn't know well and trust in real life.

Was it not the content of that discussion which kicked all of this off?

OfSpartacus · 02/07/2018 16:05

I don't think it's really beneficial to discuss this further. It's coming very close to fishing.

It happened. Let's move on.

OlennasWimple · 02/07/2018 18:34

Beyond - shouldn't that badge read something like "Silently, I am correcting your grammar" to avoid a split infinitive.....?

boatyardblues · 02/07/2018 23:49

I pondered posting this same comment underneath, but decided against. I’m only surprised it took this long. Grin

Bespin · 03/07/2018 07:32

Would totally get a "Silently, I am correcting your grammar" badge lol 😉

RogerAllamsFangirl · 03/07/2018 07:51

Fowler permits a split infinitive. The tendency to avoid them derived from snobbery from those who know Latin because in Latin you can't split an infinitive. Sometimes a phrase sounds better with the infinitive split. Where do I collect my pedant's medal (or badge), please?

OlennasWimple · 03/07/2018 13:00

I know the split infinitive thing isn't a concrete rule ("To go boldly" sounds shit!), but in the context of grammar pedantry, well, if one's going to wear a badge cast stones, surely one needs to be beyond reproach?

Bowlofbabelfish · 03/07/2018 14:36

I nearly bought a Star Trek themed babygro with ‘I just boldly went’ on it last week Grin

(Minor derail for humour, apologies. Today is rather depressing and gruelling...)

IamXXHearMeRoar · 04/07/2018 17:48

I haven't seen this posted elsewhere and think it deserves a mention. Just found it looking for scottish activism. Sorry if it has already been posted.

Well done Trish Gin

I know you've only ever posted on this thread on Mumsnet but you really ought to branch out. There's some fantastic cake recipes on the baking thread - I'm sure someone will be along with some recipes shortly.

bullinachinateashop · 05/07/2018 14:46

Just a silly child like response. Stick to the evidence.

SmilesTheCat · 05/07/2018 14:50

bull what rot!
MF are doing a fantastic job and are being mentioned almost weekly if not daily by national media!

KnittyNatter · 05/07/2018 15:02

Bull What bull!

MF are superb. Funniest bunch of activists ever, and such lovely women. They deserve praise and support for all they do.

bullinachinateashop · 05/07/2018 15:35

Oh yer. Looks like it from where I'm sitting reading all the bile. It's the moral high ground they keep on taking that's cracking me up. It's almost like they have somehow, decided without a mandate, to be judge and jury on anyone else who may contribute to the debate. Pomposity at it's best.
