I wondered if an accountability thread/suggestion thread for small (or big but mine will be small!) actions GC feminists could take might be good?

I would like to be prompted by others Smile

I have emailed [email protected]
today about their gender self id policy for dorms.
One thread here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3285738-Woman-gets-key-to-Highland-hostel-dorm-after-self-identifying-as-male

I email companies regularly about safeguarding; YHA, Girl Guides, shops known to allow self ID persons in changing rooms etc. Sometimes several email exchanges ensue (I'm quite tenacious Smile). I also leave information in changing rooms when shopping because I don't think enough women know about the consequenses of self ID and what it will mean if it goes ahead.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 22/06/2018 21:13

I really like the idea of leaving information in changing rooms MyAuntyBadger but not one for me as I never use shop changing rooms!

I don't use them much either, so I don't do it often. I've just seen the new thread about TT reaching their target and remembered that I occasionally donate to crowdfunders. Do you talk to friends and family about it? That can have such an impact, I can't tell you how many people have been shocked when I've talked about some of the issues I've read about on here. I mainly lurk, but I've learned so much from these boards and passed it on. I'd never be brave enough to do what the fantastic Man Friday et al women do, but I hope that just talking about it will help.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 22/06/2018 22:49

Yeah people round here go Shock then say things MN would delete (to be clear not nasty things just reality based biology things).
I mostly write letters & emails. I really want to do stickers in toilets but I cant let my 2 yr old see me putting stickers on walls Grin (& i dont want to make life harder for the cleaners)
I will write to my MP again tomorrow if i have time...

We went to our MP's surgery today to share our concern about the sort of anti-trans material posted on Mumsnet and other social media platforms.

BeUpStanding · 22/06/2018 23:06

I spoke to my three teenage nieces for the first time about transgenderism. Apparently there are loads in their school, mainly girls wanting to be boys, so we talked about why that might be. It lead onto me telling them about the Equality Act, and the Gender Recognition Act, and the difference between sex & gender. I told them about proposal to bring in self-ID, and they immediately saw what problems it would cause... sports, prison, health care etc.

We talked about why it was important to have sex segregated spaces, and I told them how women had fought for them.

I'd say I peak transed them, but to be honest I think they were already there. They just don't understand the trans phenomenon, and think it's crazy that some people believe humans can change sex.

But we did also talk about the importance of being kind and respectful, especially to the girls at their school who are struggling with gender identity.

It was the first time I'd talked properly to them about feminism, and it went really well.

Great idea for a thread by the way OP!

Waddlelikeapenguin · 22/06/2018 23:34

That sounds great BeUpStanding I have two awesome feminist aunts which was really important to me as a teenager.
The TED "we should all be feminists" might be a good watch for them. I have the wee book but tbh it loses something without Chimamanda's fantastic delivery.

I need to speak to my niece Smile

Snappity
Either that's a huge typo or you're on the wrong forum.

Angels is that way 🔄

Amalfi Snappity posted exactly as they wanted to, and they know where they are.... We have seen them Smile

LangCleg · 23/06/2018 09:07

Cool story, Snappity!

This week, I wrote a fourth letter to my MP on the topic of women's right to freedom of assembly in an environment so hostile it is now being threatened with terrorist attack.

I emailed several organisations on the use of "gender" as a protected characteristic when it should be "sex".

And I donated to two crowdfunders.

Writersblock2 · 23/06/2018 09:12

I worked on the Let a Woman speak website (so excited!) and spoke to the media about our next event.

Pratchet · 23/06/2018 09:37

Raised it at work. Replaced a public facing 'gender' with 'sex'. Other stuff can't say.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/06/2018 09:42

Snappity's comment made me think of something - doesn't HQ frown on PBP coming back under new usernames? Because I think at this point it's fairly obvious that this is not the first time we've seen them here.

Pratchet · 23/06/2018 09:44

Oh I also wrote to an organisation to get them to update their characteristics.

Pratchet · 23/06/2018 09:44

I just reported for being a PBP and for sweeping generalisation.

"Great move! Although in fairness to MNHQ they are taking steps to address the rampant transphobia."

I think the jury is out on that one. Under new European rules it looks as though social media platforms will become responsible for any copyright breaches and will need bots to review material as it is posted. I would like to see that extended to cover hate speech as well.

SarahAr · 23/06/2018 11:30

I told them about proposal to bring in self-ID, and they immediately saw what problems it would cause... sports, prison, health care etc

Except it does not affect sports as sports are excluded from both the GRA and EA. And it does not affect prison as the prison regulations will be updated at the same time as the primary regulation. And it won't affect health care as either the GRA does not apply (e.g. single sex wards) or exceptions in the EA can be used (health care roles for specific sexes) etc

Pratchet · 23/06/2018 11:31

Hate speech is already deleted. Are you talking about extending the definition of 'hate speech' to anyone who describes material reality?

Snappity · 23/06/2018 11:36

"Stonewall have a page on ways to support Trans Equality here"

It doesn't really interest me. I know it probably should, but I tend to focus on just two things

  1. Ensuring that all women get equal rights and that some women (notably trans women) aren't excluded from that
  2. Privacy and ensuring that we don't have to start carrying round ID just to use the loo.
Snappity · 23/06/2018 11:39

"Hate speech is already deleted. Are you talking about extending the definition of 'hate speech' to anyone who describes material reality?"

Some of the now-banned acronyms were hate speech. I would prefer to see terms like that proactively excluded from social media before they appear on the site rather than relying on after-the-event moderation

Pratchet · 23/06/2018 11:44

I would call tf, cs and tsw*n hate speech. Would you be happy to see those pro actively banned also?

Pratchet · 23/06/2018 11:44

And can you answer my question about descriptions of material reality - yes or no? Cards on the table.
