If I identified as trans - Eddie Izzard

I'd be seriously concerned that this person who claims to represent the trans issue is making a hash of said issue, and politics in general:

twitter.com/LOLabourLive/status/1007980764321939457
"I'm a member of the NEC. I've been a member of the NEC for about two weeks now. And I'm running for re-election right now, that's how relection works right now. ...I believe we have a slogan for the Labour Party, For the Many, Not the Few [what, you just found out Eddie?]"

Eddie in another LabourLive clip talks about 100 years of suffragettes "women, or , er, and transgender people...'2018. the end of the first world war. and er, we exist. so if you ever get depressed about the global situation draw a graph of human rights from ancient Eyypt...."

I used to admire Eddie for reclaiming stereotypical 'women's' clothing to represent the bandwidth of male.

Eddie seems to have recently swallowed the transgender agenda, and then got so confused that Eddie's not able to put together a coherent speech that doesn't involve ice-cream, ancient Egypt or, well, erm, I'm not sure. (And yep, you can shout at me 'it's just humour' but the 25 people amassed by the stage didn't seem to think it was humour either!).

It's Sunday, I've had a glass of wine, and this thread may not make sense, but I used to be a) a Labour supporter, b) a trans 'ally' and c) an Eddie Izzard fan.

WTF happened in the last couple of years that excluded some females from the above?

(Rhetorical question for many women on this board!)

That comment was wrong of me and I apologise. I'm proud of every woman who does things that the patriarchy "inappropriate". I am glad you can share your opinions here even if I desperately wish there was more acceptance of the other side of the debate. I hope I haven't made you feel as if you cant share your opinions - infighting isn't ever the answer to guaranteeing rights for women. 🤝

Mmm yum, I haven't had a C de B for years! Delicious. I have a boring old Montepulciano.

Voice0fReason · 17/06/2018 21:57

I used to like Eddie. I liked the fact that he rejected dresses and make-up as being women's - he said that anyone can wear them. I remember him saying, "they're not women's clothes, they're mine." He described himself as a transvestite - a man who likes wearing dresses and make-up. He never claimed that any of that made him a woman.
Now he has declared himself as trans, are we supposed to see him as a man or woman? I don't understand what he's talking about any more.

agrumentative

I'm not sure whether your last comment was directed at me, but if it was, let's keep talking.

That's what is so saddening in this discussion right now, is that we can't keep talking as there are people (I have only witnessed the shut down on one side, transactavists, despite me looking on all sides for the discussion and, believe me, I'm looking for all sides of the discussion) who don't want us to talk about this.

I'm off to bed - you know, one glass and all! - but hopefully return to a respectful conversation in the morning.

I think he will struggle in politics. He will lose credibility by joking around badly all the time. I doubt he can make the transition.

LaSqrrl · 17/06/2018 22:50

[2010]: He's a transvestite, heterosexual standup comic and actor

Yes, I used to admire Izzard's stance of "these are not women's clothes, these are my clothes"

So now I start to wonder about the magical power of clothing! Or it could be just the big green light for heterosexual men to embrace transgenderism because they can all keep their Laydee Penis now. And brag about it, endlessly.

Yambabe · 17/06/2018 22:57

It was Eddie that peak-transed me.

Eddie as a man who cross-dressed, wore makeup and didn't give a shit? Brilliant, ground-breaking and comfortable in his own skin.

Eddie as "trans"? Just no. You are precisely what trans isn't about. You don't represent my friends who have struggled and suffered to be who they need to be. You are precisely the problem that women have with the current trans umbrella. You are not a woman Eddie, you're just jumping on a bandwagon and people are falling for it cos you're a nice bloke.

I see you Sad

Picassospaintbrush · 17/06/2018 23:02

Fit's the late transitioning cross dresser DSM type- just saying.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/06/2018 00:03

From Izzard's wiki page 'He calls himself "a straight transvestite, or male lesbian".'

The former - fine. No problem, an honest bloke in a frock. But a 'Male lesbian'? Nope. That's not a thing, Eddie.
