They support ALL women don’t forget.

There is more. mobile.twitter.com/MunroeBergdorf?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

And the response is overwhelmingly critical. The BFI have seriously cocked up here Smile

As far as I can work out, this entire thread may contravene the new guidelines. How are we supposed to discuss our outrage over this story if we aren't allowed to refer to MB's biology and history as a man - i.e. to misgender MB?

Otherwise it's women object to woman... Same as the Connecticut athletes. It's the sex of the participants that matters, not their gender identity.

ShotsFired · 16/06/2018 15:17

And of course "identity" comes top and f the list.

Just a nice subtle (sledgehammer subtle) way to remind actual women it's all about how you feel, not what you are.

Serfisafleur · 16/06/2018 15:24

So....

MB flounced? Didn't speak I think.

Anyone able to update?

Beachcomber · 16/06/2018 15:44

I wonder if we can refer to persons such as MB as "of the male sex caste"?

As in "MB wouldn't have been offered this role if they weren't of a member of the male sex caste".

Because that isn't referring to the person as male but of their place in a social hierarchy.

thewitchofwentworth · 16/06/2018 15:47

Perhaps we can refer to Munroe as censored.

Munroe Bergdorf is a censored.
censored is censored and always will be censored.

Beachcomber · 16/06/2018 16:53

That's jolly tempting thewitchofwentworth.

I suspect we'd soon be told that it isn't in the spirit of MN and that perhaps we need to consider if it is the site for us....

Statement from BFI:

BFI Southbank’s Woman With A Movie Camera Summit will welcome over 35 women filmmakers, writers, artists, and cultural thinkers to speak about the role of gender and activism in cinema and media. This provocative day will hail courageous trailblazers of the past, champion new voices in film criticism and programming and explore movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, all while celebrating the women who’ve defied the odds to make their mark on the international film and media industries.

For our keynote speaker we expressly wanted a voice outside of filmmaking that could widen the lens. We invited Munroe because she represents a contemporary and interesting perspective on the subjects of the day, and she will discuss her experiences as a trans-activist and the making of her recent Channel 4 documentary What Makes a Woman. The BFI is an inclusive organisation which welcomes people from all communities. We appreciate that Munroe’s involvement has provoked a strong and mixed reaction and we hope it will help further the gender debate in a positive and constructive way and encourage audiences to recognise and acknowledge the quality and value of difference, which we believe is a benefit to our industry and to our wider society.

Oh just fuck off.

Huffpost
'Trans Model Munroe Bergdorf Is Angry About The Average Life Expectancy Of Trans Women Of Colour' (MB says average is 35 years)

In the video interview MB talks about her time at all boys school, shows school phograph and describes childhood.
MB also says she "identifies as a transwoman"

Quite a balanced piece in the Guardian, Julian Vigo is quoted. They are not accepting comments;

Cwenthryth · 16/06/2018 17:09

Well, according to Twitter, Bergdorf simply didn’t turn up.

Amy Desir on Twitter very kindly saying perhaps Bergdorf decided to show some integrity. Although MB was all over Twitter last night telling the nasty [anacronym forbidden]s off. So perhaps not. Someone else on Twitter ‘disgusted’ MB was ‘bullied’ out of the talk. Jeez.

PositivelyPERF · 16/06/2018 17:13

Gosh, that’s awful. I hope it wasn’t ‘women’s problems’. 😇

ShotsFired · 16/06/2018 17:25

More like a "women problem" Grin

Kettlepotblackagain · 16/06/2018 17:27

I just worry now that the spin machine will go into action and Munroe will use this for even more publicity.

OP posts:
GeordieTerf · 16/06/2018 17:30

If she didn't turn up, then that's very unprofessional.

Mind you, based on her track record, it's not surprising.

Serfisafleur · 16/06/2018 17:35

I saw a pic of a lot of the female speakers apparently "standing in solidarity" with MB on Transtwitter. Obviously none of the speakers wants to out themselves as agreeing with the unpopular pov by not standing on stage while most of them agree with it privately. You've really got to stick your neck on the line to admit to these things.

IfNot · 16/06/2018 17:36

This is interesting from the BFI:
while celebrating the women who’ve defied the odds to make their mark on the international film and media industries.
Why would it be "defying the odds" to make it as a female director or writer or camerawoman? The odds, like it's mathematically unlikely, when we make up 51% of the population?
I think they mean "defying the system" .

SuitedandBooted · 16/06/2018 17:48

Amy nails it.

Trans model Munroe Bergdorf is angry about the average life expectancy of trans women of colour
Thats a valid issue. Perhaps Munroe Bergdorf should focus their activism on this and other issues which affect their own community, rather than pushing women out of the way at events that are supposed to focus on women.

SuitedandBooted · 16/06/2018 18:05

I think this transwoman, needs to offer her services to the BFI for the LGBT event they are holding next Spring!

I bet its womens fault that Munroe just didn't bother to turn up.

Suited

Excellent comment

Trans model Munroe Bergdorf is angry about the average life expectancy of trans women of colour

This is indeed a valid issue. But again, rather than actually campaigning about it, Munroe just tried to appropriate the plight of trans sex workers in South America for themselves with their 'statistically I only have 4 years left to live' tweet.
