Just had the primary school newsletter for this week and it refers to the visit of the 'lady dentist'. Dint want to be a difficult parent but don't think that is acceptable. How would you word an email? Or would you ignore it?

Is the Head female? I double dare you to refer to her as a 'Lady Head'...

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/06/2018 17:12

Have a look at the ‘man who has everything’ Facebook and pick a meme...

:)

MrsJayy · 15/06/2018 17:15

So a dentist came into school but no ordinary dentist but Lady dentist how posh Grin it is ridiculous isn't it but are you going to say anything I would laugh about how twee the headteacher is.

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 15/06/2018 17:18

I’m frequently referred to as a ‘lady vicar’ and it drives me mad. It is said as often by women as men.

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 15/06/2018 17:18

(Sorry my comment wasn’t helpful but I felt like I needed that little rant!)

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/06/2018 17:20

Man who has it all! Not everything.

Perhaps your could refer to him as a Male headmistress?

C8H10N4O2 · 15/06/2018 17:20

I would complain. I used to pick this stuff up regularly - I was always polite, often implied I thought it was an oversight they would want to correct quickly, always followed up. It was mostly an issue with primary school notices, at secondary level it happened much less often.

It does make a difference and nothing changes if it isn't challenged.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 15/06/2018 17:21

I ask for a lady doctor when I’m wanting my vulva/arsehole looked at. I really should phrase it better. My last two dentists have been female but I just call them “dentist”.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2018 17:22

Eat repeat are you at least a vicar? Otherwise it's just odd :)

Kettlepotblackagain · 15/06/2018 17:24

Ooohhh a laydeee dentist. I bet it’s spread like wildfire that a laydee dentist is visiting!

I bloody love Man who had it all by the way.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2018 17:24

Dh travels 20miles to visit a lady dentist instead of registering with the very nice gentleman nhs dentist down the road.

speakingwoman · 15/06/2018 17:24

stealth got in there before me :)

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/06/2018 17:25

It's absurd when you consider a similar phrase like a "gentleman nurse"...

I'd email, point it out as if it was an oversight, and explain why assuming that dentists are male by default is a good example of everyday sexism.

MrsJayy · 15/06/2018 17:27

Gentlemen nurse sounds like a nurse for men

TimeToDash · 15/06/2018 17:28

They're probably just giving that information as some of the children might be worried and it helps them build a picture of the person. Why does it bother you?

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/06/2018 17:30

They could easily have said "the dentist, Miss Smith, will be visiting..." or whatever. "Lady dentist" is ridiculous, old fashioned and makes a distinction that doesn't need to be there based on the assumption that by default dentists are men.

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 15/06/2018 17:31

Eat repeat are you at least a vicar?Otherwise it's just odd

Haha yes I am!

speakingwoman · 15/06/2018 17:31

Dinosaurchicken · 15/06/2018 17:32

So when a male dentist visits they also specifically say that it’s a man dentist that’s visiting ?

Thought not.

Kettlepotblackagain · 15/06/2018 17:33

Man who has it all

'lady dentist'
SardineReturns · 15/06/2018 17:33

I have never heard anyone refer to a "gentlemen dentist" Grin

Like the way everyone is ignoring the silly question Grin

Dinosaurchicken · 15/06/2018 17:33

I’d be tempted to ask to to address her as while you’ve had several female dentists you’ve never met one who is a Laydee before ..

grasspigeons · 15/06/2018 17:36

Well as the office lady or 'lady in the office' or Mrs Office Lady (as I am called several times a day) typed it up she probably didn't notice how stupid it sounds. Or maybe it was a trans woman dentist and the head wanted go make sure she wasn't misgenderdGrin

grasspigeons · 15/06/2018 17:37

In terms of sn email - humour is the way forward and see address to the male headteacher
