Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

log of inequalities in language used when adapted to become trans-inclusive

Hopefully this is an issue we will all agree on.

I've noticed a few threads pointing out matters such as:

  1. The Green party calling men "men" and woman "nonmen"
  2. Cancer research referring to women as "people with a cervix" but to men as "men"
  3. toilets for "men" and "nonmen"

If anyone is interested, I thought it would be useful to log evidence of examples of this when they are detected. In that way it should become possible to see if there is sexism behind the language.

This is a great idea. It will work to record and thereby demonstrate the sexism, rather than transphobia, that is at the core of the objection to this sort of thing . How best to do it? One compiler or shared access spreadsheet or something else??

However is convenient. The key thing is to link to the source. I will try to link to the cancer research source.

complaint that language used during the Irish referendum was 'cissexist' and ongoing lobbying around use of the word 'woman' in policies and laws giving abortion rights:

current case in UK contesting the use of the word 'mother'

my understanding is that they are seeking father or parent.

Just to say that I have checked the Green party's trans policy and it is scrupulously even-handed between trans men and trans women.

Is anyone able to connect me to the thread where someone was in a building with toilets labelled "men" and "non-men".

Do you mean the NUS Trans 18 conference when they attempted to re-label the women's loos in a hotel and when challenged decided to occupy?

thread is here:

There's also this thread re toilets:

that's the one:

quote from the NUS twitter account:

"This has been fixed and signs are where they're supposed to be. There is a disabled toilet with a gender neutral sign, gender neutral toilets (formerly women's toilets), another disabled toilet and men's. If anything further occurs please let staff or steering know ASAP."

to be fair, the NUS committee were told they could not make all toilets gender neutral because of restrictions by the venue.

Isn't this at the heart of the ideology?
