It's going to be made a criminal offence with a 2 year jail sentence .

Well done to all those women who have fought for this to happen

If you look at Sir Christopher Chope's wiki page this totally fits. AngryWhat a awful man.

PoisonousSmurf · 15/06/2018 15:03

On the BBC news a spokesperson was saying that there is at last a law to stop perverts from taking photo's of women's genitals.
Aren't they wearing pants??

Ereshkigal · 15/06/2018 15:04

Why are so many awful misogynists crawling out of the woodwork to be openly anti women?

redshoeblueshoe · 15/06/2018 15:05

I don't know if anyone saw the piece on Sky news this morning about this. I was horrified. The man was in a supermarket (this was caught on CCTV) there was only him and a woman in the aisle. she was standing still looking at something, he very quickly bent down and took a photo, he then took one step away, then moved back and did it again.
She didn't re-act but I think that was because she didn't know what had happened. She was not a young kid, neither was she wearing a short skirt.
I am only saying about her age and dress length because Nick Freeman thinks its women's fault. (there is a thread about his tweet)

poorbuthappy · 15/06/2018 15:07

I am aghast at this.

BlooperReel · 15/06/2018 15:09

Christopher Chope is clearly a vile misogynistic pig. How fucking dare he block this! On what bloody grounds!

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 15/06/2018 15:09

Just seen on the news the law has been blocked by a Tory MP Sir Christopher Chope

What the actual fuck? Why are there so many scummy shitty men? And they get away with this bullshit time and time again! Just WHY????? FFS

FermatsTheorem · 15/06/2018 15:11

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Chope Wiki page on Chope.

Basically the man comes across as a complete sociopath - in that he seems to hate other people (women and men alike), and if, on any given issue, there's a path which would quite clearly be the morally right one to anyone, of either political stamp, with an ounce of common decency, he will take the other path just out of sheer obstreperousness. A very nasty piece of work indeed.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 15/06/2018 15:11

@MrsTerryPratchett we can speculate that he is a nasty, sexist twat. How dare he feel he has the right to violate women in this way.
I hope he is sacked.

tobee · 15/06/2018 15:13

He's a real relic of hanging and flogging type of mp.

enoughisenoughtoday · 15/06/2018 15:16

Ereshkigal
The misogynists are being nurtured and enabled by powerful movements intent on eradicating women. Our language and identity is apparently unacceptable, it is being actively erased ( see the Cancer Research thread as today's example), porn is celebrated and gross impersonations of women are considered normal, then of course the creeps and misogynists feel empowered. Just look at where the support for the Ian Huntley's of the world is coming from - tells you everything you need to know about who and what they value.

He seems to enjoy making it bloody hard for anyone and everyone reading a few articles on him, including about how he put in 40+ private bills to block up the system last year with a load of pointless shit just because he could! WTAF!

enoughisenoughtoday · 15/06/2018 15:20

And I've just seen that a Tory MP has objected! So is he in favour of upskirting? Why else would he oppose it? And he's an MP Sad
Wonder what his constituency party has to say about this.

FermatsTheorem · 15/06/2018 15:21

Just checked the voting at the last general election, he polled 69.6% of the vote, with a swing of +11.5% (in an election where the Torys overall lost their majority). It seems that the inhabitants of Christchurch in Dorset are quite happy with their choice of MP (I am now imagining it to be more than a little bit like Royston Vasey). Confused Shock Angry

deydododatdodontdeydo · 15/06/2018 15:23

@FermatsTheorem
I agree - hard to call him mysoginist when he seems to be against anything and everything!

FermatsTheorem · 15/06/2018 15:24

Oh I suspect he is gleefully misogynistic as well as generally misanthropic.

walktheplank · 15/06/2018 15:31

He does seem a nasty piece of work. I can't help thinking about the speech that the main character in Extras makes where he mentions photographers who commit this offence, here's part of it:

"You open the paper and you see a picture of Lindsay Lohan getting out of a car, and the headline is "Cover Up Lindsay, We Can See Your Knickers". Of course you can see her knickers - your photographer is lying in the road, pointing his camera up her dress to see her knickers! You're literally the gutter press."

I wasn't keen on Extras on the whole, but that bit was in the special and the entire speech is one of the most amazing bits of TV I've ever seen.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 15/06/2018 15:32

I cannot believe someone would block such a law. Shame on him. SHAME!

I wonder if we will hear from him on this topic?

deydododatdodontdeydo · 15/06/2018 15:34

He sounds like a first class .
Insert your own word.

Neolara · 15/06/2018 16:01

This is so outrageous that surely we can rally the collective might of MN to exert some pressure.

Everyone write to their MPs?

londoneast · 15/06/2018 16:31

I could have sworn Ive read about men who have been convicted of upskirting in the past.
I think its down to the descression of the police/judges etc.

Baroquehavoc · 15/06/2018 16:41

I guess we know what Sir Christopher does on his days off.

He claims he objected because it wasn't debated. Hmm

NotTerfNorCis · 15/06/2018 16:44

When I heard a Tory MP vetoed this I suspected Philip Davies. Turns out there is one even worse!

leyat · 15/06/2018 16:48

Upskirting is a criminal offense in Scotland, that's probably why you've heard of convictions, but sadly England and Wales will now have to wait because of that POS.

FuckLush · 15/06/2018 16:49

I could have sworn Ive read about men who have been convicted of upskirting in the past. I think its down to the descression of the police/judges etc.

I would imagine they were charged with other offences and the "upskirting" was just an extra part of their offence.

The problem at the moment is there is nothing specific in legislation to stop it. It doesn't fall under voyeurism, it could be a public order offence if the victims were aware (however I've never seen anyone charged that way) but theres no law against photographing someone in a public place without their consent (especially since 99% of these shots would be a victims underwear, rather than their genitals) Its obvious that the law needs an overhaul in this regard because I don't think they anticipated practically the entire population purchasing a device which doubles up as a camera, which doesn't look out of place with them walking around with it in their hand.
