Crappest arguments used against feminism on social media

What are the crap 'positions' against feminism you see most often, and how do you reply?

One of my 'favourites' is when men respond with loads of stats about male suicide, women getting custody of kids, military deaths, rate of men murdered compared to women, in a manner saying 'HA! So much for the Patriarchy, huh, HUH?!'

As if a) we didn't realise any of these was a thing, b) these weren't generally caused by the Patriarchy in the first place and c) feminism is about thinking that every single man has it better than every single woman.

You also get 'Trump doesn't hate women, look at these women he employed!' - uhm yeah, we're actually beyond 'employing some women' being a sign of being supportive of women in general.

Another popular one is to find some totally extreme feminist saying that all men should be killed, castrated etc and claiming that this represents all feminism.

I have had a fair few women say 'feminism has gone too far'. I never really know what to say in response due to my jaw being on the floor.

Clionba · 09/06/2018 12:13

thenightsky I hear you. What about women that say "I'm not a feminist, but..." drives me mad.

Ereshkigal · 09/06/2018 12:15

She's not a feminist she's a TERF/SWERF (er, what do you think the F in this supposedly neutral descriptive acronym stands for exactly?)

KateSheppard · 09/06/2018 12:33

Genuine man: OK, so what AM I allowed to say to women anymore?

Me: How about whatever non-leery thing that you would say to a man under the same circumstances.

Genuine man: It's so haaaaaard, I just don't know what to saaaay to the laaaadies anymore!

Me: Hmm

Ereshkigal · 09/06/2018 12:35

Oh yes!

Clionba · 09/06/2018 12:40

"as usual, we men are to blame for everything"

thenightsky · 09/06/2018 12:45

Clionba Oh yes... had that one many times. Claim they are the victims of some vendetta by horrible feminists.

When F1 decided to do away with the role of 'pit girls' I got into some terrible tussles on FB. Apparently this decision was totally down to bullying feminists and nothing at all to do with a sensible business decision.

Clionba · 09/06/2018 12:50

On breakfast tv they had some of the "pit girls" v "feminists" about the issue. I wanted to scream. Of course the nasty feminists were putting other women out of work! Dreadful.

KateSheppard · 09/06/2018 12:50

"as usual, we men are to blame for everything"

That one made me laugh. Very true.

Poor men, so put upon. Oh their suffering, we cannot know. Wink

Pratchet · 09/06/2018 12:55

At home, not on social media: 'yes dear'

Hmm
Ereshkigal · 09/06/2018 13:34

I got into an argument with a woman here who was claiming that it was unfair that feminists had complained about the TV cameras seeking out topless women at a music festival as it was objectifying women. Because when she did it to get attention they would no longer film her which was a bad thing.

Clionba · 09/06/2018 13:42

You couldn't make it up!! I had a female colleague complaining about the Run for Life in aid of Breast Cancer research because there isn't such a thing for men's cancer. I said it's up to men to start one then, isn't it, rather than us give up on ours?

'You don't get feminists wanting to be sewage operatives / miners / refuse collectors do you?".

My mate is a bowel nurse and can cope with more shades of shite, and lift 15 stone patients. Except that's a 'girl' job.

Offred · 09/06/2018 15:10

My fave is re porn ‘good luck finding a man then’

Clionba · 11/06/2018 12:44

Look at the Guardian review of Poldark. Men getting upset at the "sexism" of the programme and wanting to "form a Patriarchy" in response. Response to some women fancying Aidan Turner!!

IcedPurple · 11/06/2018 14:37

Excellent thread.

I found myself nodding in recognition so many times. Almost all the 'bingo' lines have been covered but I'll add one:

"Women in the west have it made. Why aren't feminists campaigning for women's rights in Iran (or insert name of random other 'oppressive' country)?"

To which I respond:

a) Have they asked for our support?
b) Why aren't you campaigning for them, since you care so much?

IcedPurple · 11/06/2018 14:38

clionba

Just had a look. Hilarious. They really really hate it when women have the audacity to fancy a fit man, don't they?

Good to see that some of the regular posters there are making a much deserved mockery of them!
