Transgender campaigners and organisations have released an open letter to Channel 4 criticising Genderquake, a season of programmes touted as an exploration of the gender debate, as "counterproductive".
Signees are particularly concerned about Genderquake: The Debate, a studio discussion hosted by Cathy Newman that promises to look at what gender means in 2018. It will discuss topics including: 'what defines our gender identity', 'how that affects our rights', 'should it be easier to change gender' and 'does gender matter'.

The letter, published by indy100 in full below, argues that the debate will give legitimacy to transphobia, prejudice and the notion that trans identities are up for discussion. This concern is presumably stoked by the presence of Australian-born academic and writer Germaine Greer on the panel, who has previously said transgender women "can't be women". continues...

"The letter is published in full below and has been signed by dozens of prominent transgender and non-binary activists and campaigners - and allies - alike, including Fox Fisher, Owl, Stephanie Hirst, Juno Roche, Travis Alabanza, Kate Llewellyn, Jack Monroe and India Willoughby."

Town Bloody Hall.

What a debate!

They'd have to consider women to be people to make that work, Datun.

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 18:39

Datun Exactly. As others have said, if you base it on something like QT then a sensible and wide ranging debate could easily be had. Last night was a farce.

Datun · 09/05/2018 18:42

I would really like to see a series of half-hour debates. Each one taking a different section. The first one can be toilets and changing rooms. Then sport. Then children. Prisons, etc.

Frankly, if these were conducted in the way I've suggested, you'd only need one.

This 'women not being allowed to talk' bollocks needs to go. Because as soon as we can, the whole thing implodes.

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 18:46

Datun Panel members talking over each other didn't help either. It needs someone with gravitas who can stop that, let the conversation flow and all participants get their views across. Surely to goodness, that can't be too hard?

LangCleg · 09/05/2018 18:48

If anybody's looking for some light relief...

The New York Times is so angry at Channel 4's decision to broadcast a transgender debate that it's decided to blame the BBC.

I laughed, anyway!

I honestly don't get it. You say to the panel members if you start talking over someone else I'll cut your microphone off.

It leads me to believe that it's entirely deliberate.

I just got an additional security check on this thread?

Is this right?

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 18:52

Datun I totally agree. Judging by what audience members are saying, the whole set up was a farce. They were promised questions, asked to heckle etc. Also, CJ was to be differed to often. That's not a debate it's the CJ show with woman ridiculed.

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 18:53

Elendon What do you mean?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/05/2018 18:56

^I just got an additional security check on this thread?

There's a thread on site stuff about it. I'm guessing MNHQ have had to put some extra measures in since the site sent down last night.

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 18:59

Oh, no, I've not had anything like that. I'm on my laptop.

theaveragewife · 09/05/2018 19:01

I complained to Ofcom too Hmm due to impartiality and false information.

QuentinSummers · 09/05/2018 19:02

I've had it.

theaveragewife · 09/05/2018 19:02

Sorry - lack of impartiality

Elendon · 09/05/2018 19:07

I had a capture about 15 minutes ago to verify staying on this thread. It's never happened to me before, although I do have slowness of my laptop with pop ups from my security measures in place. But only on the women's rights thread.

Love you all and will leave now. Have major things to do.

xx

ScrubTheDecks · 09/05/2018 19:15

The Stonewall complaint is ridiculous. Cathy Newman condemned the heckling from the audience, as did panellists. Complaining spuriously to further an agenda is pathetic.

Datun · 09/05/2018 19:26

But didn't Posie say the audience were encouraged to heckle?

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 19:34

But didn't Posie say the audience were encouraged to heckle?

Yes, when I mentioned it up-thread I got it from Posie's Twitter.

Juno Roche writes:
www.gaytimes.co.uk/culture/105845/channel-4-genderquake-opinion/
Opinion: Why Channel 4’s Genderquake was a sh*tshow of epic proportions

"Last night, Channel 4 in all of its ageing, saggy wisdom went ahead with a live ‘debate’ which was centred around the questions ‘what does gender mean today, should it be easier to change gender and does gender actually even matter’?
The panel consisted of the once respected feminist Germaine Greer, the well known transphobe Sarah Ditum, the journalist and Editor of Novara Media Ash Sarkar, the campaigner Munroe Bergdorf, and the American rich white Republican Caitlyn Jenner – obviously there to bring a sense of ‘who knows what,’ but she is also going to address parliament on diversity so someone, somewhere must know what she brings to the proverbial trans and equality table.

Completing the panel was a trans man and a person who defined as non binary.

There was also an audience – a live gladiatorial, foaming-at-the-mouth, spitting bile and vile insults such as ‘penis’ and ‘you’re a man’. It was pure and simple playground violence.

At least we got to see that very small but vocal group of women – who are seeking to erase trans identities – for what they truly are: angry, aggressive and so far from any idea of inclusive feminism that they reminded me of Piers Morgan claiming to be a feminist...." continues

This is exactly why I said I though shouting penis has caused us harm. Heckle away, absolutely, but I knew when I heard this last night it would turn into (to quote a PP) penis-gate.

JoanSummers · 09/05/2018 19:39

Munroe Bergdorf is a 'campaigner', Ash Sarkar is a 'journalist', and Sarah Ditum is described as a 'well known transphobe'. Someone is showing their arse to the world there.

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2018 19:41

Indeed.

merrymouse · 09/05/2018 19:42

It sounds as though C4 deliberately encouraged a confrontational atmosphere to create entertainment. That’s the very last thing this issue needs.
