Transgender Weightlifter Story in Daily Mail! - will they let the comments through?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5584849/Transgender-woman-Laurel-Hubbard-Kiwi-weightlifter-compete-Commonwealth-Games.html#comments

Its pretty bland. It doesn't touch on any other aspects of the GRA, and there are supportive comments from a female weightlifter, ( who is probably watching her back).

There are the usual "Oh , serves the feminists right - they wanted equality!" comments on the story starting up Hmm.

I have commented on DM articles like this before, but my comments don't go up. Does anyone else want to try?

Looks like that competition will be early tomorrow morning, so not a lot of people will see it on this side of the world.

I feel bad saying this, but I hope that he does win as it will peak trans a lot of people. If he doesn't win, the TRAs will be all: "see! There's no advantage to being trans!"

Juells · 08/04/2018 16:12

Another aspect to this is that I can see women injuring themselves in their efforts to compete against trans athletes.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 08/04/2018 16:30

I heard that Hubbard threw the last competition to avoid controversy about trouncing female athletes.

Pratchet · 08/04/2018 16:55

I was wondering if he'd throw it this time: like a loss leader to prove that men don't always beat women so it's all fine, nothing to worry about.

Pratchet · 08/04/2018 16:55

Trumpdump: snap you said it first.

That's what I was thinking too. I wonder if the lure of the Olympics or The Cause will triumph?

Ereshkigal · 08/04/2018 17:03

I suspect the former as I don't think Laurel is a particularly committed transactivist.

WhereYouLeftIt · 08/04/2018 17:12

I actually hope he wins. By a huge margin.

It needs to be demonstrated and crystal clear just what is going on. If he wins, it will make headlines. And a lot of people aware of what's going on who up until now have been oblivious.

Mamaryllis · 08/04/2018 17:26

I was reading a blog post t’other day on Fit is a Feminist Issue, and was quite depressed. Most of the contributors are academics and fully immersed in the transwomen are women culture. That particular post was centering on recruiting more women and gender non conforming people into cycling, and trying to erase the barriers that prevent it. It all seems a bit circular and contradictory to me - by encouraging transwomen to take up and compete in cycling, you effectively render it more difficult for women to compete and win on fair terms. I understand the striving towards removing barriers to participation, but it irks me that a feminist blog is championing transwomen alongside female athletes without recognizing the obvious consequences for females. A real lack of rigour. I’m kinda disappointed. I like the blog as it many other respects it really does provide sane reflections on sport and womanhood. But I understand the limitations on free speech for academics. Suspect this is actual kool aid driven though.

MargeH · 08/04/2018 17:27

Just shown the photo to my DH.

A peak trans moment.

Igneococcus · 08/04/2018 17:53

Camilla Long commented on Hubbard in today's Times:
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/its-funny-how-womenwont-own-uptobeing-wary-of-have-i-got-news-for-you-ph2lrxvnj?shareToken=d4482216e56ea4645410fd18e8eb5645

She annoys me as often as I agree with her but I'm grateful she is drawing attention to this.

soulrider · 08/04/2018 17:56

There is an article on the bbc about this

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/commonwealth-games/43688627

StealthPolarBear · 08/04/2018 17:59

Jus seen this on the BBC.

StrangeLookingParasite · 08/04/2018 18:06

I tried to comment as well. The Daily Mail is actually pro-TRA as far as I can tell. None of my gender critical comments make it through.

This smug cheat boils my fucking piss.

misscockerspaniel · 08/04/2018 18:12

According to Camilla Long, the average age for success in this particular sport is 24. This competitor is 40 (not 39 as stated in her article).

Milvusmilvus · 08/04/2018 19:19

Are the bookies taking bets on the sports that have trans women competing?
Might be time to have my first flutter.Grin
I think I know who is gonna win.

Pratchet · 08/04/2018 19:20

I don't know, Trump might be on to something. Failure to win gold would be a big campaign victory for transactivists.

NotAgainYoda · 08/04/2018 19:23

Yes. I agree it's good that this is news on the BBC website. The article makes it pretty obvious that the Emperor has No Clothes

NotAgainYoda · 08/04/2018 19:24

"She's quite an introverted character," Weightlifting New Zealand high performance director Simon Kent said. "Laurel is Laurel. We want to keep things as normal as we can.

from the BBc website

Subtext: "Don't be mean to her..."

Fairenuff · 08/04/2018 19:35

Why don't the female athletes organise and boycott these events?

Why should they? They have trained hard, they want to compete. All that time, effort and money. All the sacrifices they've made. Should they throw it all away because the organisers can't make proper rules?

As usual, women are having sort out the mess made by others who have no respect for them.

Nextloorejext · 08/04/2018 19:37

*There is a transgender boy (high school senior I think) who wrestles in the US. He’s very muscular, and wants to compete with the boys, but isn't allowed to.

So he wrestles the girls, wins, & gets booed.

That’s not right either confused*

Problem is if they break the same sex rule then that opens all girls competition up to transgirls competing with girls.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/04/2018 19:47

Just saw this on the BBC. The link text from the main page is 'Transgender weightlifter defies critics.' As though it's some kind of moral victory. Unbelievable.

Like other people have said, I hope he wins by miles and it gets a lot of media coverage.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 08/04/2018 19:51

I have to say a lot of this trans related reporting has really opened my eyes to media bias. Ofcourse is always know it exists and is stronger for some outlets than others.

But even this article from the BBC is biased. It mentions “critics” in a balanced way but the headline frames it as a good thing.

NotAgainYoda · 08/04/2018 19:56

I read the BBC article as being very very gutless careful.

It's saying one thing but showing another. There are hints if you look for them, but I think enough for most people to say "Eh???"
