Transgender Weightlifter Story in Daily Mail! - will they let the comments through?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5584849/Transgender-woman-Laurel-Hubbard-Kiwi-weightlifter-compete-Commonwealth-Games.html#comments

Its pretty bland. It doesn't touch on any other aspects of the GRA, and there are supportive comments from a female weightlifter, ( who is probably watching her back).

There are the usual "Oh , serves the feminists right - they wanted equality!" comments on the story starting up Hmm.

I have commented on DM articles like this before, but my comments don't go up. Does anyone else want to try?

A reminder that you don't need to log in or register to click the upvote / downvote buttons...

I hope the women's weightlifting events at the 2020 Olympics are televised on the BBC and every person who thought that it was just crazy feminists predicting men invading women's sports will realise the truth - hopefully we'll only end up with one Olympics of this shit before they quickly reverse their position.

Popchyk · 06/04/2018 15:52

I presume the Daily Mail in this country will run an update on this story on Monday after the competition.

The article will be carefully worded to start with but they will end up finding a way to blame Jeremy Corbyn for it.

misscockerspaniel · 06/04/2018 15:58

I love sport and I love taking part. I really hope the crowd boos this competitor. It is unfair misogynistic pot hunting.

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/04/2018 16:03

There is a transgender boy (high school senior I think) who wrestles in the US. He’s very muscular, and wants to compete with the boys, but isn't allowed to.

So he wrestles the girls, wins, & gets booed.

That’s not right either Confused

Popchyk · 06/04/2018 16:04

Laurel never competed at the Commonwealth Games as a man, right? Or the Olympics or World Championships.

Not good enough to qualify against the men.

But suddenly at age 40 Hubbard is good enough to compete against women internationally, although Hubbard has no physical advantage over female athletes.

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/04/2018 16:07

Texas goes by sex on birth certificate. Some girls choose to forfeit bouts with him (I don’t blame them. It’s a mess).

Popchyk · 06/04/2018 16:16

So Mack Begg (FTM transgender) can take testosterone, but other female wrestlers cannot?

Testosterone is a banned substance, but is only banned for non-trans people?

Christ.

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/04/2018 16:20

Presumably it’s also banned for natal boys but would be allowed for him if he competed with them Confused

ohfortuna · 06/04/2018 16:22

I really hope the crowd boos this competitor
if the upvotes and downvotes of the comments are anything to go by then the crowd is booing this TIM

noeffingidea · 06/04/2018 16:31

I think we can see what public opinion is on this one, going on the green and red ticks.
He's a guy with long hair. Yep, it's not like he's even gone to any effort. He's just taking the piss basically, and the organisers of the sport are just too chicken shit to say so.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/04/2018 16:35

I got a comment through! First time ever. I'd say 99% of the comments are saying 'this is not fair' and all being heavily upvoted (which I imagine is down to the power of MN at least in part Grin). Not quite as much as normal of the kneejerk 'ha ha feminists, getting a taste of your own medicine now!' you often see on DM comments.

Mner · 06/04/2018 16:39

I have bumped up some of the sensible ones. Unbelievable that this could ever be a possibility. It makes no sense whatsoever

DN4GeekinDerby · 06/04/2018 17:20

LapdanceShoeshine I wrestled in the States as the only female on an otherwise all-male high school team and only wrestled against boys in official matches. I wasn't even allowed to take creatine - an over the counter pill that's available pretty much anywhere which isn't banned as it's benefits are much like a protein shake. I had to choose between that or wrestling. If I'd been caught on T...I would not only lose the rest of my high school wrestling career but likely any chance of being part of any other sport at high school or university. Testosterone, or any other steroids, were certainly not something anyone could openly take and have one's team brag about as is happening in Texas now. This is a very new development. I know there are plenty of girls now wrestling boys who aren't on T because - shockingly - most still view that as cheating even for those with dysphoria.

Also, kids with conditions like ADD who are on stimulants are often banned from these sports even though the evidence that it gives any sort of medical advantage is very weak while we have decades of evidence of the advantage of taking T even years after coming off.

No one should be going into official meets on T. It's disrespectful and Begg's and Begg's team's attitude has also been incredibly rude. Not surprising for teenagers but they should all be pulled up on that and should really not be surprised that how they're acting hasn't made them any fans. Really, booing wasn't usual even for well-liked wrestlers (rival teams and all that) and I more than once had parents in my face. It's never been a sport known for people being nice...but at least there used to be sensible rules.

Sports have gotten into such a mess, I'm kinda glad none of mine have gotten particularly interested in any.

Elendon · 06/04/2018 18:14

Why was my post deleted?

Elendon · 06/04/2018 18:16

It's clear anyway to all posting here what is going on.

Popchyk · 06/04/2018 18:29

Yes, it is almost as if certain people desperately wish to stop women talking amongst themselves.

I'll bet there have been thousands of reports.

And a couple of deletions.

Still, it keeps these people off the streets.

Elendon · 06/04/2018 18:33

Anyway, who loves a man with a ponytail?

Anyone?

Notwellbitch · 06/04/2018 18:33

He's a guy with long hair. Yep, it's not like he's even gone to any effort.

Yep. I was reading a discussion about this on another site and one male poster claimed to not see any significant physical differences between Hubbard and their competitors in the photo of them on the podium. The delusion some people display when it comes to these things is astounding. Why do they refuse to see?

misscockerspaniel · 06/04/2018 18:43

Elendon Who loves a man with a ponytail? Are you trying to derail this thread?! (I did have a thing for Michael Bolton, now that you ask Grin )

noeffingidea · 06/04/2018 18:46

one male poster claimed to not see any significant physical differences between Hubbard and their competitors
Should have gone to specsavers then. Hubbard is obviously male.

Juells · 06/04/2018 18:50

"I don't believe there is any fundamental difference between me and the other athletes, and to suggest there is slightly demeaning to them."

Yup, that's what's demeaning to them.

Elendon · 06/04/2018 18:52

Sorry, to derail, but I needed to make the point.

Guy.
Long hair.
Ponytail.

Elendon · 06/04/2018 18:55

I'll happily take Michael Boltan, so long as he doesn't sing. Is that derailing?

Give me Keanu Reeves any day.
