Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

An International Women's Group which is actually for and about women and girls!

I seem to remember that there was recently a thread about women's or feminist groups we could join to meet like-minded women in real life. It did seem that the few which did exist have been infiltrated by TIMs.

Today, I met a woman from my local Soroptimist International. She has asked me to speak to them, after the summer sometime, about transgender issues - this was after hearing me speak today about the silencing of women, with particular reference to Heather Brunskell-Evans, Venice Allan and Jennifer James, encouraging people to read Andrew Gilligan's article in the Sunday Times, and the trade unionist attacked by TRAs on a picket line on IWD. She said that they have become aware that this is an issue which they need to learn much more about. They have had contact with a TIF - attending meetings I think, rather than as an invited speaker. I also mentioned what's happening with Girl Guiding, and she shared my concerns about that, and said that Soroptimists remains a single sex organisation.

I've now had a chance to look at what they do, and am very impressed. I've applied to join my local club, and as many of us here, like me, might not know much about them, thought I'd share here, and encourage you to check them out and consider joining.

I’ve checked and they’ve told me that anyone who identifies as a woman can join so it’s a no for me

this would have been ok with me pre stonewall trans umbrella rubbish. but now i get the impression that TRAs are actively seeking to take over literally anything that purports to be for women. i dunno .... maybe it would be worth joining an individual group to see? one could always un-join again.

FesteringCarbuncle · 11/06/2018 14:59

I went to check out my localish group
I was very impressed at the work they do and they were definitely talking about females
I emailed asking for their stance on TIMs linking it to guides and tumbleweed. No reply
I am not handing over cash to a group for women and girls if they don't know what women are

sexnotgender · 11/06/2018 15:05

Hmm, there’s one near my new house. Might check it out.

IamXXHearMeRoar · 11/06/2018 15:24

Gawd you got my hopes up for a penis free action group there Sad

2rebecca · 11/06/2018 15:43

The first transwoman I met in the 1980s was upset because the local soroptomist group had blackballed her. She had had the full surgery but being a woman meant joining women only stuff (after all what's the point in a sex change op if you just do the same stuff you did as a man). I'd never heard of them at the time but the main thing she liked about them, apart from being women only, was that they played a xylophone at the beginning of meetings.
It was a strange conversation.

Youvealwaysbeenthecaretaker · 11/06/2018 16:02

What, like Hi-de-hi?

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 16:14

See if they only allowed trans women who had transitioned legally I would be ok with it.
Penises are my line in the sand, makes it very simple. If you have a penis you are a man and shouldn’t be allowed to access women only spaces and clubs

Jenster72 · 11/06/2018 16:24

@hoppinggreen have you actually contacted somebody on the management who has confirmed that? Personally I am not sure that the organisation itself would be particularly welcoming of anything other than women born as women or fully gender transitioned post op women.....I will endeavour to seek an official view on this however and update you further as and when I have an official view.

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 16:38

I contacted them via Facebook and asked and someone called Lisa said
“ we allow anyone who identifies as a woman to join” exact quote

I was very clear that I was asking about self identification as opposed to legal transition

Weezol · 11/06/2018 16:48

I got my hopes up very slightly for a bit there. Looks like I'll be staying in my hermitage then.

OnThisHill · 11/06/2018 16:53

Another one bites the dust.....

Sorry OP, I am so worried for this organisation and sadly, I fear that now it has been 'advertised' here, prepare for an influx of TiMs. They won't leave anything to women and as a PP has said, soon it will be trans this, trans that.

Also, the UN sustainability thing mentioned includes gender, not sex.

If I were you I'd get this thread removed toute de suite.

Sorry if that sounds overly dramatic. I don't think it is.

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 17:00

Agreed with onthishill the TRAs will make sure that if self ID trans women weren’t allowed in before they certainly be now so I suggest OP asks for removal before the Soroptimists face an onslaught of new “menbers” ( see what I did there?)

TERFragetteCity · 11/06/2018 17:18

In every sense of the word Hopping.

Giddy99 · 11/06/2018 17:21

Hoppinggreen
Why ask for removal of thread, You were quite happy to let the thread continue when you thought that it was only those you wanted to be members.
I would think the Soroptimists would be totally fed up with the constant calls made to them today from those wanting information as to whether they allow trans women,

PositivelyPERF · 11/06/2018 17:24

I would think the Soroptimists would be totally fed up with the constant calls made to them today from those wanting information as to whether they allow trans women

Don’t worry, they’ll now get fed up with all the phone calls from the TRAs that will demand to join, just so they can make sure they have another group to infiltrate and more women to bully.

Giddy99 · 11/06/2018 17:30

@hoppinggreen

"I was very clear that I was asking about self identification as opposed to legal transition"
Please could you explain what legal transition is please,

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 17:41

I wasn’t asking for removal of the thread I was suggesting it might be a good idea so the organisation aren’t inundated by people asking about this issue.
The organisation looked very interesting to me as their aims and objectives were ones I would agree with and I would like to join a women only group to promote the rights of women and encourage female education. If they want to allow self identified women in that’s up to them and as an organisation their right to make that decision bit it means it’s not for me. They can set their own membership criteria and I wouldn’t and haven’t argued with them about this. I simply asked the question and replied “ thank you” when they responded
Giddy I am not a lawyer and have not studied the GRA so am not completely sure what the legal definition of a woman is but I would imagine that a man who has had the appropriate surgery, Counselling, drugs etc and has had their birth certificate changed to female.
To me those people are trans women and should have the right to access female only spaces and clubs. They are however not the same as me, they are different but equal as far as I am concerned

OnThisHill · 11/06/2018 17:46

@Giddy99

It was me who mentioned removal of thread, so that the TRAs won't see this and then takeover this organisation, like it has with every other.

And for clarification, I'll say it, a person with a penis is not a woman and should not be allowed into a women only organisation.

BiologyIsReal · 11/06/2018 18:22

I think fewer and fewer of these types of organisations are single sex now. I was invited to join my local Rotary Club and they were certainly all men in the past.

Giddy99 · 11/06/2018 18:22

@hoppingyellow

You mentioned Legal Transition, Please explain what Legal Transition is,

In my eyes if a person has an NHS number, DWP number, Tax code, Driving Licence and Passport in thier female name all legal documents and used as forms of ID, and they can still have a Penis, to me that's enough,

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 18:42

Your choice giddy but not everyone has to agree with that
Also, please don’t misname me - it’s triggering and I may need counselling to recover

OnThisHill · 11/06/2018 18:43

@hoppingyellow

Nobody with a shred of common sense and a basic idea of human biology believes that a person with a penis is a woman.

Children with their senses intact and developed can tell the difference.

There is a commonly held misconception that the GRA means that TiMs BECOME women.

No, it merely means these people may be treated legally as if they are women. That is it. It does NOT say they ARE women.

Women can't be TiMs. TiMs are not WOMEN.

I don't know you, but I see you.

This is a near perfect example of how a hopeful thread about an all female organisation has been hijacked by TRA in a very short time.

That makes me sad.

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 18:51

onthishill are you speaking to me?
No idea who hoppingyellow is. I think one of the TRA’s was making a pathetic attempt to upset me by getting my name wrong

(Spoiler alert that’s not my actual name)
Anyway, I completely agree with what you have said
Penis = man and no law or hissy fits will make me change my mind on that

OnThisHill · 11/06/2018 18:53

Edit, sorry that was for @giddy99

And @Hoppinggreen please accept my apologies for mis-naming you.

Hoppinggreen · 11/06/2018 18:55

It’s ok, I will get over it (eventually)
