Very interesting debate. Rebecca asked whether we should give up fighting the 'transwomen are women' mantra, as an unwinnable battle that distracts from more pressing issues. Her argument was that so much of the Establishment are now signed up to this (even though they don't really believe it) that we risk losing allies who would support many of the single sex services we wish to preserve (hope I am quoting you correctly, if you're reading this Rebecca
).
Most of the room disagreed, including me (I was the person in the blue top who said it might work if you were arguing with Owen Jones), but I really enjoyed her talk, including that she introduced a bit of controversy.
Debbie spoke well and made us all laugh with her trans mantra computer programme (it just writes 'trans women are women' endlessly) and there was a great speaker from a women's support group,Aysha Iqbal, talking about the potential impact of self-ID.
It was great to chat to one MNetter and to know lots of others were in the room.
