Biological SEX MATTERS. How many mumsnetters say "aye" to this campaign?

1000 replies

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 10:34

This document and campaign called 'Sex Matters' is a collaborative effort by amazing and knowledgeable mumsnetters on a couple of threads in FWR.

To move forward with the campaign, the organisations and individuals approached will need to know who is behind it, and the honest truth, is that mumsnetters have spearheaded it.

That does not mean that other campaigners can't get involved or even take greater ownership of it. But it needs a bio in order to introduce it to people and organisations to get started and I need your consent to describe the campaign this way: 'mumsnetter led' (and maybe even some suggestions for writing a bio on this thread).

So, you amazing gender-critical mumsnetters, do you say 'aye'?

Aye

Elendon · 05/03/2018 15:13

My male cat does not like men. He has just about accepted my son - he was 8 when we got him. The only man he did like, didn't like cats! he never liked my ex

My, gorgeous, male cat would have to be rehomed with women only.

LostMyLunchMoney · 05/03/2018 15:13

Aye GinGin thank you OP

This campaign is about choice rather than mandating anything.

There is some contention about where sex-segregation is needed and where it isn't according to an individuals personal experiences and preferences.

Why are you against people having the option?

Hmm not a definite "aye" I would prefer a less catchy slogan like "sometimes sex matters" or "when sex matters it matters" and less emphasis on segregation. Maybe talk about distinction? Ensuring the female sex is not discriminated against due to biology is not segregation. Ensuring female medical issues are addressed is not segregation. Ensuring that humans have no unnecessary constraints imposed due to their biology is not segregation.

I understand there are issues and times where sex segregation is the solution to a problem, but I am wary of over emphasising this . It does sound unnecessarily exclusive and that this entire issue is about keeping trans identified men out. It is important the tone is clearly about protecting women, and segregation (excluding trans women ) is only promoted as a means to that end, not an objective in its own right. This should be clear from a casual skim as well as detailed review.

Finally, personally I think not all segregation /distinction needs to be the same. In particular I am uncomfortable about keeping old school transexuals who have physically transitioned of all woman's spaces, out of woman's sport yes, but a top shop changing room? Not so sure. I get this is about the right to have a single sex changing room if we want it, but I think the tone implies a demand all changing rooms are strictly single sex. For those not versed in this debate it does sound deliberately trans exclusionary.

Thanks sore for your comments - they are appreciated even though you aren't behind it.

You shouldn't be able to choose segregation, that sentiment is abhorrent. The word is very apposite in that sentence.

There are circumstances where segregation is the only way to achieve legitimately good things. The only way. That doesn't make it something any tom, dick or harry should be able to choose just because they fancy it - with no legal burden to show that it's either beneficial or necessary. How bloody ridiculous, it's supposed to be a last resort!

Xulishesthepilot · 05/03/2018 15:31

I wish it wasn't necessary at all!!!

Patodp · 05/03/2018 15:33

You shouldn't be able to choose segregation

Why on earth not?

Segregation
ˌsɛɡrɪˈɡeɪʃ(ə)n/Submit
noun

  1. The action or state of setting someone or something apart from others.
"the segregation of pupils with learning difficulties"

synonyms: separation, setting apart, keeping apart, sorting out; More

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 15:33

That doesn't make it something any tom, dick or harry should be able to choose just because they fancy it - with no legal burden to show that it's either beneficial or necessary.

The problem is that orgs and institutions are not invoking the sex exemptions in the equality laws that already exist and the choice for sex segregation is being eroded.

I'd choose a sex segregated 200m race over a unisex any day.

sorenipples · 05/03/2018 15:34

Sex matters - very glad there is a debate. I have also just been reminded sex matters while treating my little boy's nappy change the same as a girls....

Patodp · 05/03/2018 15:35

Indeed. Currently we don't have that choice.

MamehaSan · 05/03/2018 15:37

Aye

Xulishesthepilot · 05/03/2018 15:38

Don't be obtuse Pato. Fuck sake it's like stepping back in time. They'll be trying to sell us those bastard Just for Her Bic pens again soon won't they, when they hear women want their own special lady stuff again.

Xulishesthepilot · 05/03/2018 15:39

Anyway I won't derail your thread. Good luck.

Patodp · 05/03/2018 15:41

Men and women can both buy a pink Bic pen.
That's not sex segregation.

Xulishesthepilot · 05/03/2018 15:42

Your being dense. I'll leave you to it.
