'Women' in sport - don't doubt it isn't happening...

I think this shows just how 'easy' it is going to be for men to take over womens sport unless something changes fast.

Mountain Biking: Lack of stand down period for transgender rider causes confusion for field

Given NZ is such a small country it seems to be leading the field in TIMs in womens sport with Laurel Hubbard already competing.

I am hoping that as this happens more and more there will be some push back from women and things will change but I'm wondering what it will take given this is justified by saying they are following governing body rules.

It's bizarre that 20+ years ago East German female athletes were being stripped of Olympic medals for testosterone doping but now it's ok to compete as a "woman" in elite events with an abnormal Testosterone level

MunchausensLovelyHorse · 26/02/2018 11:46

Patodp, which makes me wonder how that Texas situation is allowed?

Link again - www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/transgender-wrestler-competes-against-girls-forced-mack-beggs-texas-america-a8227601.html

Patodp · 26/02/2018 12:02

I can only assume testosterone doping must be permitted but only up to a certain level... so you wonder why all female competitors aren't doing it?
It says Mack is taking a low dose of T.

Or Texas has it's own arbitrary rules around this.

It's all bonkers.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 26/02/2018 12:10

I can't help but feel the men in charge of sport are happy to see women being treated like this. Misogynistic men are absolutely everywhere.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 26/02/2018 12:12

I think the wrestling thing is because they have a safety rule that the students can only compete in their birth sex and a rule that medically prescribed prohibited drugs are allowed which was presumably brought in to allow kids who need steroids to compete.

UpstartCrow · 26/02/2018 12:19

Samoan weightlifter Luniarra Sipaia (beaten by Laurel Hubbard) has been banned after being given a cortisone injection in her knee.

CheeseTheDay · 26/02/2018 12:24

"Other chicks" - so still thinking/talking like a man then, as I'm not aware of females ever referring to each other as 'chicks'.

SnibbleAgain · 26/02/2018 12:53

Yes that jumped out at me as well.

In NZ is it usual for women to refer to groups of other women as "chicks"? I have no idea.

lostlemon · 26/02/2018 14:00

Yes I noticed that, typical NZ bloke speak and no women don't refer to other groups of women as 'chicks'.

OP posts:
ALittleBitOfButter · 26/02/2018 14:09

I wouldn't expect nz women to use chicks in that context at all. Perhaps if they were nightclubbing might women use the term. It implies a sexually objectifiable group of women.

Maryz · 26/02/2018 14:40

What I thought was interesting about that article is the mention of the "small field" of only 5 women starting - this is really the only answer, if every female-born competitor refuses to compete.

It isn't fair, no-one thinks it's fair. Because if you look at last year's results for the same event Anton Weatherly finished 34th in the men's race but was still 10 seconds faster than the women's winner.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 26/02/2018 16:03

Yet Female-to-Male wrestler, Mack Beggs, on testosterone, is being told to carry on competing against girls, in Texas. Again it's an unfairness - because Mack has that extra testosterone and the strength advantage that comes with it, and has won every bout.

I think FtM people who are taking testosterone should be disqualifie. Its doping.

So trasnwomen compete with men, regardless of changes they make to themselves as they are still men, men with low testosterone are still men. And transmen should compete with women UNLESS they are currently transitioning (beyond cutting hair and changing clothes). If they are on testosterone, then they don't compete. Its harsh, but its their choice to be on performance enhancing drugs, many people cannot compete, for many reasons

MrGHardy · 26/02/2018 18:22

Was this the dickhead that claimed "I came nowhere near winning in the men's so obviously I should compete against women"?

Man if only I had known 10 years ago, I'd still be playing football and winning women's competitions.

SnibbleAgain · 26/02/2018 18:22

If it's not normal for women to refer to groups of women as "chicks" in NZ

then I concur that this person is extraordinarily sexist and not even fucking trying

Just wants everyone to have fun my arse, with so many of these situations it feels like blatant trolling

Pootlebug · 26/02/2018 18:37

Ffs as a keen amateur sportswoman this makes my blood boil. Can't begin to imagine how shit it must feel when you train hard enough to be at that level.

In the spirit of small acts of rebellion, I am contemplating getting some running tops printed with a catchy slogan to wear while running and at races. Any ideas? Ideally to get the point across but not get beaten up... I was thinking 'save women's sport' on one side and something about sex not gender on the other but if anyone could think of anything more catchy/appropriate/witty please shout!

LineysHorseWithNoName · 26/02/2018 18:47

Drug Free Sport, Sex Segregated #DFSSS

It's not catchy though.

Running for sex not gender

Anything that gets the message out there really. Most people are totally unaware so it gives you the chance to start the conversation.

Voice0fReason · 26/02/2018 22:55

I completely despair at what is happening to women's sport.
I really feel for the women who are having to make way for men taking their places.
