No punches pulled (but no names named either, probably sensible):

Donkey I agree with what you say about using sex/sex roles, also about the sexed body shaping experience. Not got time to read the link, but will do.

Someone upthread or on another thread made a comment about removing the pomo goggles, which I think is exactly the point in terms of emphasising material reality. It’s always been my issue with postmodernism even before all this.

The other point is that equality and difference are not mutually exclusive - women do have distinct needs because they are female, it does not mean they are lesser. I think the hierarchical value given to sex roles is externally imposed, but I am open to the view that the roles themselves are not entirely.

Ereshkigal · 26/01/2018 16:29

Feminists should drop the word 'gender' and just talk about sex and sex roles, or sex stereotypes. That language is clear and can't be co-opted for TRA doublethink, and nobody needs a background or interest in feminist theory to understand it.

YY. Although sex is like a forbidden word now, in the media, even when they are talking only about biological sex i.e. medical issues it's gender this, gender that. It makes my teeth itch.

I’m late to the party for commenting on this and still trying to catch up.
I’m seriously impressed with those of you getting this out there in any form. I’m just about dipping my toe in sharing stuff on Facebook because I fear the professional repercussions so the fact that other women are using their professional status to bring it into the open is rather inspiring!
In terms of getting the press covering this where does Private Eye stand on these issues? Could anyone with media connections get them to cover this? I would think their readers would also be anti-authoritarian and likely to make noises about it.

this appeared in Private Eye a couple of weeks back

"Outside our bubble, when we start talking about "gender critical" and "social constructs", most people will switch off."

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but outside the bubble I tend to refer to ladybrains and stereotypes, rather than trying to lecture on feminist theory. Know your audience Wink

RedToothBrush · 26/01/2018 20:52

Hey when HIGNFY recorded?

nauticant · 26/01/2018 21:16

The last time I discussed this in real life BeyondWitchbitchterf I mentioned lady brain to my friend, who is a never-discuss-any-politics-with-me-ever type person, and, when she had stopped pissing herself laughing, she'd been hooked into discussing this.

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 26/01/2018 21:47

I have a friend who's a proper 90's ladette, but she loves talking about ladybrains Grin

Sorry to hark back but it's taken me a while to read the thread.

I really don't like Rod Liddle.

I think his article in the Spectator was very good, will help a lot and just maybe will open the floodgates to sanity.

So many comments have resonated but the one that really stuck was that if we want everyone to agree with us on this, we are going to have to accept standing next to some people who have other views that we find abhorrent.

(Maybe with that small chink of convergence we could influence those other views)

thank you Kiss for facillitating this FlowersWine

Welcome sweetheart. 💋 Seen the Times piece just published? I said it would snowball. It’s a great piece.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 27/01/2018 00:41

It is.

Am rehearsing my speech in case they come knocking on my door!

Hope the buggers do!

Yes, Times piece is excellent. I am taking out a subscription with them. They have done fantastic work covering the issues in a balanced way. Reminds me why good journalism is worth paying for.

flapsDentata · 27/01/2018 01:12

Exactly cunts

The clamour for free and consumable has really driven down journalism. I wince at these Guardian lot, apart from the couple of good ones they have like Cohen et al. The Times isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessary. I’m over boycotting things, it’s so kneejerk, if no else is providing, I’ll throw my money at Murdock. Or Mr T. I don’t mind.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 27/01/2018 01:18

Thanks flaps

AlllWomenShortbreads · 27/01/2018 02:50

That Private Eye graphic nails it brilliantly. Grin
Great work getting this written and talked about Cis

anonymice · 27/01/2018 11:29

The article show quite clearly how disingenuous Lily Madigan has been. Flaps I was stupid to criticise the choice of paper and needed to sort myself out. The Times is doing sterling journalism actually reporting FACTS.

anonymice · 27/01/2018 11:30

Oh and Wes Streeting doesn't condone the 'tactics'? That's rather different to the stance he took on Twitter....

Popchyk · 27/01/2018 11:44

Great comments under that article.
