My response from GFM. .

Thank you for following up with us. This is C.J. from GoFundMe's Trust and Safety Team.

First, to clarify, the payment was refunded as a protective measure because we could not verify the information provided during the donation process.

If you would like to donate, can you please clarify who xx is and provide any evidence of your connection to that person or explanation of why that name was used to donate? Also, please provide a government-issued photo ID or link to a social media profile for yourself if possible. Then I can review this information and help you move forward.

I'll be on the lookout for your response. Thank you for your cooperation.

The payment went through. I can't find anywhere on there that you can't donate in another name than your own or why they can block you from donating again in any name...

Mytholmroyd · 22/01/2018 20:06

I had my jokey harmless female pseudonym donation refunded but not the anonymous donation. No sense of humour some peopleConfused

Managed to redonate eventually yesterday after several attempts with a different email address using a vpn - doubled it!

I would be asking where in the terms it states that they require that information.

I would also be asking them how and for how long they intend to store that information.

This is just annoying people and getting them more determined.

Yes, I think this is counter-productive to the transactivists aim tbh. This will just anger people even more and yes, get them to maybe donate more than they usually would.

First, to clarify, the payment was refunded as a protective measure because we could not verify the information provided during the donation process.

This is silly. The amount of times I have seen people use obviously fake names on gofundme is ridiculous. I remember one once where it was something to do with raising funds for someone who had been hit with a benefit sanction for (believe it or not) taking their ill child to A+E rather than signing on..and there were a bunch of people donating under 'Theresa May' and such. I have seen multiple donations by Donald Trump too..I refuse to believe each of those donations was made by someone with the actual name Donald Trump.

Also, please provide a government-issued photo ID or link to a social media profile for yourself if possible. Then I can review this information and help you move forward.

Clarification of who the person is, fair enough. But this bit^ is dodgy as fuck.

Vicxy · 22/01/2018 20:14

Clarification of who the person is, fair enough..but odd that they suddenly require only real name donations.

That should have been

How I managed to cut off half my post I don't know Confused

Vicxy · 22/01/2018 20:46

OK I just donated, small donation as have next to nothing left after paying all bills and such but every little helps I think.

When donating I saw

This person will receive your donation directly.
All payments are final and cannot be refunded.

So if this is true..are they taking the refunds out of Jennifers bank account or something? Not entirely sure how this whole thing works.

Donated in my real name also. Let them add me to their shitlist. I really could not care less. And if gofundme are tits about this, I also have my provisional ready to send them. You know, just incase I am not the only person of my name in the world Grin

BSJohnson · 22/01/2018 22:44

I'm not confident enough to donate under my own name, and I don't want the hassle of getting the money sent back if GFM are suspicious.

Think I'm just going to donate under an inconspicuous name. Jane Smith, maybe. Grin

SweetGrapes · 22/01/2018 23:12

Have donated again in light of the first casualty. I grew up in small town India and went through hell getting my education. Am not going to let these bastards shut me up now.
Transwomen have their own set of problems; women have their own. The two are only in the same bucket if everyone's in the bucket.

Flowers Sweet

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 23/01/2018 00:03

Have also donated again after hearing about the first casualty.

Will donate again for every woman kicked out of the party for supporting this campaign.

PlectrumElectrum · 23/01/2018 01:18

I'd like to propose this

Vagina Anthem

By the Hungry Hearts as the theme tune to this movement.

It's catchy. You'll be singing 'what the fuck is wrong with you' as you make a cuppa. Mark my wordsWinkGrin

athingthateveryoneneeds · 23/01/2018 07:49

I've missed some information. Who's been kicked out?

QuentinSummers · 23/01/2018 07:51

Venice Allan

athingthateveryoneneeds · 23/01/2018 07:52

No surprise there, then.

Was this announced on Twitter or something? I don't have Twitter and can't keep up!

QuentinSummers · 23/01/2018 08:00

Yeah it's on Twitter. It's all a bit bizarre and I'm not quite sure what's going on.

So it's not one individual going rogue, this is official GFM policy. Surely that could be legally actionable. There is no situation in which they would actually need people's social media information in order to process a donation. Who are they planning to hand that information over to?

Blanchefleur · 23/01/2018 09:34

So it's not one individual going rogue, this is official GFM policy

It can't be, though. Otherwise, we would have all had to provide photo ID to donate in the first place. And why are only some people being targeted?

You quite simply do not need to provide photo ID or social media info to donate to a fund of your choosing. Just think how many people donate to things like Children in Need by text, or by phoning up with their credit card number, for example. GoFundMe's role is to provide a means to collect donations, not to decide who is allowed to contribute.

Those who have been refunded, have you asked your bank if they have rejected an attempted transaction on your card and failed to notify you of this? My bank contacted me immediately when something suspicious happened with my card. If your bank says that your card appeared to have been used by someone else, with the name not matching, then fair enough - but they still should have told you!

I just can't see that GoFundMe would have access to what name a credit card has been issued in. If you provided proof to GFM that you were indeed called Anne Onymous, they are still not the ones who get to accept/decline a credit card. Surely that can only be something that your bank can do?

Does anyone know if JJ has been on to them about this? After all, it does say on their website that you keep every donation that you receive.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/01/2018 09:38

I mean it appears to be GFMs current policy to try to find out information that would only be needed if you intend to doxx someone for those people for whom they have an excuse/opportunity to do so. I'm not sure how big their customer service team is, so it could in theory be a handful of rogue CS agents, but given that the emails have come from multiple different people you'd think that if that was the case their boss would have noticed and shut it down by now.

GFM has been doing what they do for a while, they know that they don't need that info to process transactions. Stripe basically does all the validation work for them. So what they're saying about why they're asking for the information is a straight up lie.

Can all social media people please use this hashtag, especially today as we are expecting the statement that Labour are supporting self-id for all posts, including all women shortlists:

#LabourLosingWomen

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2018 10:02

I'd like them to justify why they need such information and what will happen with it after they've "verified" your identity. It's not in the spirit of the DPA.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/01/2018 10:06

Imagine this in any other context. You go to open a bank account, and they say "right, we'll just need your Twitter and Instagram handles , because obviously your official identification isn't enough to prove that you're who you say you are".

YetAnotherSpartacus · 23/01/2018 10:16

I bet there is a bunch of males in the Labour Party who are creaming their jeans because they are finally getting rid of pesky women who have been irritating them for years.

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2018 10:19

I think they need a little reminder of the second and third principles of the DPA "Personal data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose or those purposes" and "Personal data shall be adequate, relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose or purposes for which they are processed".

Sadly yes Angry
