Wrong side of history

Here is something I know to be true: those campaigning against trans rights will fail. Your money will be raised and spent and wasted. Your legal challenges will not succeed. Your relentless attempts to do injustice will fail. You are on the wrong side of history. Your children will grow up knowing better than you. You cannot stop progress. Your efforts are in vain.

And every time I'm proven right - every time a court judgment goes against you and every time a law protecting trans men and women is passed and every time equality is further enshrined in the laws of this country I am going to return to this thread for the pure and petty purpose of telling you I TOLD YOU SO.

He absolutely does nail it.

Oh Lyra why are you wasting your time with these horrible nasty TERFS? I bet most of them have saggy tits and don't even believe that sex work is a job like any other.

Why aren't you off campaigning for Travis's right to leap into a taxi if anybody laughs at him because he's gone out dressed as a sexualised toddler (again)?

You need to act swiftly and focus your energy, that campaign closes in a few days and hasn't yet met its target. It's very important to be on the right side of history!!!

I am so incredibly heartened by the gofundme GrinFlowersStar

I think there is a sound legal challenge to this (and many other contexts where self-ID has been adopted without legal backing) but even if we lose, my money is not wasted. The campaign is shining a big spotlight on what's happening and every day more and more women are going 'hang the fuck on Hmm' and nobody seems to go the other way. Once you have admitted to yourself that the emperor wears no clothes it's impossible to imagine him dressed again.

Thank you very much.

Is there a reason I though she was Scottish Confused

PricklyBall · 15/01/2018 22:18

@Icantreachthepretzels - fellow fanfic writer here! On a one-woman quest to write stuff with interesting women doing interesting things (including lots of interesting older women, something my readers quite often compliment me on!) And to show that vanilla het can be interesting, so long as it's cordon-bleu, Michelin starred vanilla.

Anyway, here follows a lengthy digression which will only be of interest to Pretzels, so everyone else can ignore it!

"As an avid fanfiction writer I must protest! It is a healthy and creative way to...mumble mumble..something something - OK I'm a loser.
I bet my fanfic has a lot less slashwrittenforhet'stittilation/genderbending/kink/Dom/Sub/ageplay/porn without plot in it that Mx Potter's does though.

some very very disturbing things out there in the world of fanfic. I've never considered before that it was being written by burly AGPs. I always assumed it was the disturbing psyches of teenage girls with horrific internalised misogyny. That's given me food for thought ..."

Now that's an interesting thought. I know some out-n-proud male fanfic writers (in fact, quite good online friends with at least one) but they just write interesting witty stuff. But now you come to mention it, some of the stuff I'd put down (in a rather despairing mood) to young women having their sexuality entirely shaped by their boyfriends' porn habits could well in fact be being written by seedy men in mackintoshes (possibly pink mackintoshes).

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 15/01/2018 22:23

You know what I've been thinking... all of us who are on Twitter should be giving L Madigan some love & appreciation.

Yes I know, but look at it this way. If LM hadn't done such a good job of peak transing women, would 795 of us have raised £13,640 in 3 days?

Cheers Madigan!

PricklyBall · 15/01/2018 22:25

Eamonn I'm guessing you thought Magdalen was Scottish because you might have heard she's at Edinburgh University. She got chucked out of the Lesbian society by Ada Wells for being "transphobic". (Ada Wells is a charmer, but that would be a whole long essay - eventually got suspended from the Students' Union for being anti-semitic, I think).

EamonnWright · 15/01/2018 22:33

Thank you PricklyBall.

Ada looks like a wee odious arsepiece doesn't he.

PricklyBall · 15/01/2018 22:35

Yup, odious wee arsewipe sums him up nicely. (Yes, if you're still reading Lyra, m'dear, that was a deliberate piece of "correct gendering" on my part).

thebewilderness · 15/01/2018 22:37

That is the tradition of women throughout history, innit? Two steps forward and men beat us back a step and tell us it was our own fault for not being nice enough to them.

overnightangel · 15/01/2018 22:38

I may be generalising but trans people seem to love making everything about themselves and being faux offended

EamonnWright · 15/01/2018 22:38

That's another thing PricklyBall.

If someone is accused of misgendering can they not say they are referring to people due to their sex? Or has gender overtaken sex?

ladyballs · 15/01/2018 22:39

Ah Lyra, you little scamp.

Icantreachthepretzels · 15/01/2018 22:40

@prickly I worry I'm almost overpreachy in my quest to promote equality and female strength in my stories - I think my readers must just eyeroll. I only started writing as a passive aggressive way of putting right someone else's fanfic Blush (in canon a male character died and a female character inherited his superpowers -the fan fic saved the man and so the girl remained normal- which is fine - but she was left completely useless and an utter waste of space. I've rewritten it so she's normal but awesome and damn clever with it.)

I even wrote an entire section of one chapter dedicated to the evil female lawyer refusing to make the coffee in a meeting (in canon she's just making it, in the background - they're not even in her office, they're in the male lawyer's, but she's making the tea! no chance!)
I've quite creeped myself out with the idea that a lot of the fanfic authors I've come across are in fact seedy men in macs. But then that might actually be less depressing than believing that so many girls think rape/non-con/sub/dom stuff is sexy.
On the other hand, it just shows how so many men think of women and their role in sexuality, as passive receptacles whose utter submission is desirable.
Thank goodness for the warning systems so I can avoid the worst!

sorry everyone else - fight the power and so on!

MrsKnightley · 15/01/2018 22:40

I love the number 13.

EamonnWright · 15/01/2018 22:41

Most I've come across online are narcissistic and obnoxious.

The whole thing is narcissistic imo. What guy wants to win a title in a woman's sport? How anyone can celebrate that is a mystery to me.

stitchglitched · 15/01/2018 22:43

Fabulous posts Desiderio.

LangCleg · 15/01/2018 22:45

I think though, that is transactivists. There are loads of lovely transsexuals out there who are being thrown under the bus almost as much as women are by this bunch of idiots.

Teabagtits · 15/01/2018 22:51

I came out of lurking to thank lyra for prompting me to donate some money to the cause... and I'm not even a Labour voter.

DonkeySkin · 15/01/2018 22:51

Donkey! Are you on twitter?

No, Jeaux. If I were, I'd probably spend half my day in crazy-making arguments with TRAs like Lyra. Talking to the wonderful women of Mumsnet is a far better use of my internet time. But I'm glad my post resonated.

The point is that popular opinion does not determine whether or not something is true, nor does the amount of time people believe an idea. So perhaps for the next 5, 50 or 500 years people will believe that men can be women by invoking the magic words 'i feel like a woman'. It may simply be the latest religious idea to take hold. So perhaps the world has moved on but it's foolish to think the world is on some progress escalator and that things always go forward rather than back.

That is so true Desiderio and this is why I don't have confidence that rationality will eventually win out in the trans debate. Especially now that the internet has fractured, probably irreparably, the funding model for journalism, respect for facts and civil debate, and many people's grasp on reality. With the election of Trump, the rise of the white nationalist far right and the authoritarian far left, the demise of the fourth estate and the continuing march of postmodernism through academia, I can't shake the feeling that we are moving towards a new Dark Age, with the rapid acceptance of extremist trans ideology being only one manifestation of that.

Sorry to be so gloomy.

Let's keep fighting anyway Grin

thebewilderness · 15/01/2018 22:52

Who is campaigning against trans rights? What rights are those? Do you mean that list of demands enumerating all the things people claiming to be trans must be given promptly and without question? Shot yourselves in the foot wit that one, d00d.
Women are campaigning for women's rights, which is a perfectly appropriate thing for women to do.

ATeardropExplodes · 15/01/2018 22:55

I've just thought of one woman who 'feels like a woman'. So they could apply to Labour All Women Shortlists.

Datun · 15/01/2018 22:58

wee odious arsepiece

Arf.

And yes to circle jerk and being vare important on the red eye.

If it quacks like a duck...

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/01/2018 22:58

Is it Shania Twain? Are Americans allowed on UK shortlists?
