I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

Can the next person who donates pllleeeease add on an extra £3 to get rid of that weird £2 (now £7), it's bugging me grin

Your wish is my command Grin - just donated £7.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/01/2018 02:14

I'm now imagining loads of MNers putting in 7 quid to help and ending up never righting the ship!

PlectrumElectrum · 18/01/2018 03:46

Irony? Or just wilful ignorance? Ralf Little answering a woman on twitter (currently in a woman's refuge) denying he's aware of any abuse of women for speaking out in favour of women's rights/legal protections, while @gracepetrie (who he quotes as one of those who 'helped' him see all sides & pivot back to his original stance) has helpfully started a thread justifying the 'kill all terfs' mantraHmm TRAs are just so provoked to threaten women, m'kay?

I don't know why this shit still surprises me.

DistaffSide · 18/01/2018 06:26

£16,065, Grin

Ralf Litte turns out to be an attention seeking misogynist.

He's not read or thought p about it. Can't have. I've now read a huge amount and I know where the intelligent, evidence backed arguments come from and it's now from the people whose argument is "suck my ladydick if you don't agree"

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 18/01/2018 07:52

Agreed. If you're going to be the celebrity poster boy for addressing society's ills then at least educate yourself (and not by only listening to people who agree with you). Wading into a debate arrogantly confident that you are right, without looking at the other side is bad enough. But for fuck's sake at least check if there IS another side!

Epic bellend, indeed.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 18/01/2018 07:53

It's quite heartening to see the support this campaign has received in such a short amount of time.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 18/01/2018 08:34

It makes me laugh that the TAs think that by opening up the crowd funder to the daylight of wider public awareness they'll get loads of support. They won't. They'll be laughed at, in a considerably crueller way than we do it.

You've only got to read the Twitter reaction to Heather Peta to know that is all too true. Whatever your thoughts on all woman shortlists, there's no need to be so mean.

ATeardropExplodes · 18/01/2018 08:37

I cringed at some of those responses, but it does show that outside of the Transallies and the TERFS [me included] there is no support for this mentality.

BeyondWW · 18/01/2018 08:50

Shoes, thank you Grin ❤️❤️

Stopmakingsense · 18/01/2018 08:54

Nice to see this reported in the mainstream press

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/fight-to-bar-trans-women-from-labour-shortlists-dlxmdgqtq?shareToken=6c18039df0f3829504ccce1c15840a1f

Although still a confusion, later on in the article - between transwomen (with GRC) and self-identified transwoman.

I am beginning to wonder if a distinction of "biological" "legal" and "social" as raised on this or another thread, might be a way forward. That at least might address the absurd NHS screening problem. And help with the profound cognitive dissonance of being asked to pretend someone is something they are not.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 18/01/2018 09:20

The GRC issue makes this rally tricky for women because legally we can have no recourse against trans individuals with GRC being treated completely as if they were that sex and many are relatively comfortable with this becaus there is some gate keeping.

Of course we are stuck because if we compromise and say someone GRC is a woman and then GRA legislation means GRC can be obtained by self certification then we have royally screwed ourselves over.

I'm not sure if this has made sense but we have been boxed in by previous legislation that many supported in good faith but may now be the vehicle our defeat.

BlindYeo · 18/01/2018 09:35

Agree thegirl I now think there is a major problem with having agreed to 'legal women' in the first place.

MadamMinacious · 18/01/2018 09:41

Absolutely agree; all those comments on appearance and the nastiness. I also agree with those of you above who pointed out that it is women/feminists who get all the hate when we see from those comments that the real nastiness tends to come from men who just won't accept it. I haven't seen one comment in response to those truly transphobic, nasty remarks telling them to 'die in a fire', for example.

I think we all know why this is. As usual women are targeted because it is easier because they know they won't face ACTUAL violence as they would threatening a man that way. In the end the way they treat us is cowardly.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 18/01/2018 09:43

I do to, but there is clearly no undoing it.

I was starting to feel the tide was turning with the early success of this campaign but as long as the narcissistic, virtue signaling, lefty men are against us it's going to be difficult to be listened to by the mainstream, depressing as that is.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 18/01/2018 09:43

*too

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 18/01/2018 09:43

Can anyone remember the 2004 legislation going through? I wasn't in the UK then.

Imstickingwiththisone · 18/01/2018 09:53

No but I was 16 and politics was definitely not on my radar. Despite all the commotion being made now there were still be plenty who are completely oblivious as my 16 year old self would be 😀

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 18/01/2018 09:54

Thegirlinthefireplace good point. If the GRA is amended then this legal battle could be won - at great expense - and Labour forced to only allow people who are legally women on shortlists - only for the sands to shift and for that to then include Self-ID under new laws.

Then what would be the point? Would it have achieved anything?

I guess even if this happens it'll at least create publicity and probably peak trans a load of people, as well as making people aware this is happening at all.

If that was all it did, would it be worth it? (Genuine question).

busyboysmum · 18/01/2018 10:03

I am thinking there now needs to be a distinction made between biological women and legal women. I have issues with even a person with a GRC being classed as a biological woman as they do not need to remove their penis or have hormone treatment to get one. I also even have issues with a person with a GRC who has had the surgery and takes the hormones being a biological women - they are not and never will be women.

Gingernaut · 18/01/2018 10:05

Biological women are illegal?

Datun · 18/01/2018 10:06

Most people don't have any idea about this. Certainly not the implications.

There is a general feeling of 'oh not this again - stop shoving it down our throat'. But that's as far as it goes.

Once the general public are made more aware, I can certainly see the tide turn.

I've seen it here on MN.

People have woken up, purely through allowing debate to flourish.

SonicBoomBoom · 18/01/2018 10:10

I agree busy. In fact I read, maybe on another thread or maybe it was you!, that there needs to be a distinction between biological women, "legal" women, and "social" women (the third being a man who outwardly presents as feminine, or even just says he's female, but has no GRC).

You'd think "woman" would do as a term for biological woman. But not that term has lost all meaning.

I'm torn between "give us a new term for this specific XX class then, because that group still exists", and then getting annoyed because I feel I'm capitulating to their misappropriation of the word woman and we can't let them change its meaning.
