I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

The responses to Ralf Little are brilliant. The biggest thanks to everyone taking people like him on. It does make a difference, I'm sure, even if just with others lurking and quietly reading.

EpicBellend · 17/01/2018 09:29

Name change, inspired by Mr RL. 😀

Terrylene · 17/01/2018 09:32

Ralf Little's twitter on this is gold!

I read it as jumps in feet first with his best boots on, rapidly realises there is something there and he is in it over his head, gasps for breath as he climbs out backwards, and runs..............

SadKitty86 · 17/01/2018 09:32

Talk about expulsion makes me feel like I’m at Hogwarts

I feel like there's an appropriate 'or worse, EXPELLED' gif to be made here Grin

Terrylene · 17/01/2018 09:33

Sort of Rincewind. Grin

Funny.

Hope he puts his thinking cap on Angry

HemlockSpartacus · 17/01/2018 09:42

Loving Ralf Little's timeline Hmm

"I'm listening to both sides"

He's obviously only so keen on facts and open debate when it's regarding the NHS

Thehairthebod · 17/01/2018 09:59

Yes, Ralf isn't going to RT any gender critical tweets any time soon, despite apparently 'listening to both sides'.

However, if he has been reading all the replies to his tweet then, as an intelligent guy, he will have plenty to ruminate on behind the scenes.

I'm so utterly disappointed in Ralf. I thought his NHS stuff showed him to be more intelligent and sensible than that.

I'm afraid it just goes to show men don't give a shit about women's issues, even if they think they do.

Depressing

MsBeaujangles · 17/01/2018 10:35

With regard to the latest update from Jennifer , whereby she said legal challenge for those with a GRC seems pointless but there is a good case where no GRC is held. The new labour slogan should be ‘ transwomen are women (legally) if thet hold. GRC.

MsBeaujangles · 17/01/2018 10:42

I’ve seen quite a bit on Twitter about the ‘cruelty’ of excluding ‘women’ who are in the process of transitioning and gaining a GRC. I would strongly advise people going through a major transition not to choose that moment to take up public office!

MorrisZapp · 17/01/2018 10:50

Brocialists:

Trans incusionary in the tweets
Trans exclusionary in the sheets

Popchyk · 17/01/2018 10:52

Morris, brilliant. Grin

ATeardropExplodes · 17/01/2018 10:55

Thank you Morris that sums it up perfectly.

MorrisZapp · 17/01/2018 10:58

It's from Jennifer James and she nicked it :)

MaximumVolume · 17/01/2018 11:27

I just did an anonymous donation. Nearly 1000 donors!

I got into a polite discussion about this on my CLP closed FB page. Someone (a man) shared the Eve Livingston tweets (screenshots) with this text: "It's very disappointing to see transphobia from Labour Party members who are crowdfunding to exclude trans women from all women shortlists. Trans women are women and should be included as such. As Diverse Communities Officer, I'll be making sure I engage with trans people to ensure they are included in local activity as much as possible and have a voice. Transphobia is never ok, however it's dressed up."

I responded, basically saying if you agree with AWS on the basis that the patriachal system is poorly set-up for women (based a lot on our biology & associated gender roles) then why would it be a good idea to dilute AWS with people who aren't subject to those constraints. I got a few likes and one woman posted to say she agreed.

Then a couple of men posted "Transwomen are women. No debate" - I left that alone because I thought it spoke for itself.

Then a very young woman posted a direct reply to my comment "in what way does cis women's biological bodies make it difficult to demonstrate 'commitment and reliability'???? all women shortlists and affirmative action exist because of people's perceptions of women, not because women are inherently lesser."

She had taken the quote out of context because I had said "judged within the patriarchy", so I put some basic stuff about, well, feminism Grin and explained the gender pay gap etc and the reply was basically "and you think trans people don't have it harder?". So I said "I think we're going in circles, but thanks for the discussion."

I think it's really important to be measured and polite whilst putting the point across. I had a hunch I wasn't going to persuade her, but hopefully my approach will convince someone who hasn't given this any thought before and is reading the thread.

busyboysmum · 17/01/2018 11:39

These young feminists are bonkers aren't they? I think at that age I was more concerned about being nice to men than I am now though. Given all my many years of experience about how much they really don't particularly like or care about women (not all men obvs but the majority)

Datun · 17/01/2018 11:48

I do understand this. I think most women do.

We are operating with a system that rewards female adherence to the patriarchy.

But when female oppression, based on biology is pointed out, quite rationally, and using examples, I can't get my head around how people don't immediately see it.

We all know it goes on, it's patently obvious. It's the dot connecting exercise which brings it all together that switches on the lightbulb.

If you are reading and comprehending, it should be a fairly swift realisation.

I understand a bit of 'heel digging in' while your concept of society flips. But it does take a bit of an odd mindset to brutally discard what you can see with your own eyes.

MaximumVolume · 17/01/2018 11:50

I know, it's taken having kids to make me really appreciate just what a different world women live in compared to men. Ironically, all this was going on on Sunday and I wasn't able to reply as fully as I'd have liked as I was doing stuff with my kids.

I'm quite active in my CLP, particularly the Women's group. I raised this subject with the WO and she was unaware of it all - this was before LM but after Speakers' Corner -and said she'd definitely consider getting some speakers for a future meeting.

The older ladies of the CLP keep asking me to put myself forward as a councillor candidate. I don't really have time at the moment, but I've actually agreed to go forward for the chat with the Chair/ Secretary, mainly so that I can say I can't do it because I'm thinking of leaving the party over Gender Self-ID and Brexit!

I really don't want to leave the party as we're doing exciting stuff in the Women's Group, but at the moment I'm not even sure if I can vote Labour!

Terrylene · 17/01/2018 13:07

It was Terry Pratchet that opened my eyes to the concept of people only Seeing What They Believe (and then going on to continue blindingly believing whilst the world around them is doing something else) and also seeing what they Want To believe.

You think that it is ignorance and that once you have pointed out what is actually there, in front of them, they will see it. But there are so many layers for them to unpick, they will do what is easiest and go back to what they think is there.

BeyondWW · 17/01/2018 13:46

I'm a bit obsessive about confirmation bias Grin I read and reread and reread and reread to make sure I'm not just seeing what I want to!!

BeyondWW · 17/01/2018 13:47

£15,602 btw

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 17/01/2018 15:13

932 people and £15,642 - I'm getting excited about passing the threshold of 1000 people donated.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/01/2018 15:28

I remember being a young feminist. And, to my eternal shame, being really glad I was straight, attractive and confident. Because I never got the, "it's because you're jealous/ugly" responses other women did. And men were much more likely to listen to me and (I now realise, pretend to) agree. Any view that would have made me seriously unpopular and hated... would I have? I don't know.

But I do know gender critical young people. One of whom is a young lesbian who is defending another young lesbian at her school against accusations of transphobia. And I'm hoping the awful Mermaid nonsense in schools does what religious education does and makes young people think critically and reject things.

IndominusRex · 17/01/2018 17:39

I know it's proven to be absolutely impossible for any of us to support other causes alongside this one Hmm but there is a new campaign on crowdjustice by some of the worboys victims aiming to raise 10k by mid Feb to challenge the parole verdict if anyone is interested.
