So wrote to my MP, for context, urban, large city, Labour male MP. Got my reply and feel like I am living in an episode of The Twilight Zone.

To condense: he's aware of the current discussion around - wait for it- around BATHROOMS , but am I aware that Transwomen are a very vulnerable group and more likely to encounter violence? sorry how many women are murdered every fucking week.

He is sure that womens safe spaces will be protected. From who? men who identify as men?

What can I do.I'm neither intelligent or articulate.I sent him the sage link, told him of my concerns for young children/adolescents. He just does not get it.

We're gonna lose this arn't we?

OP posts:

OP have you mentioned Travis and the Top Shop changing room? It's good to give an example of a man demanding access to a woman's space when there's a lot of reports etc on it.

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 12:14

Crone your MP has tweeted this, perhaps push this angle. So he's concerned about girls missing education through lack of sanitary protection, is he also concerned about girls missing education through lack of privacy in toilets when they're on their period. Make him THINK.

I agree with just keep asking questions, these are your concerns and how is HE as your MP going to address them!

Beltane18

That reminds me, topshop have yet to respond to my email!

genehuntswife · 21/12/2017 13:23

Does anyone have the figures and percentages of trans people who have encountered violence and compare it to woman who have encountered violence?

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 13:39

I've just read a blog by Miranda Yardley on another thread on her, that covered murder rates.

It's on the human rights thread, that's also a good read, though I'm not entirely sure I understand it all, though am getting there.

Chocolatecake84 · 21/12/2017 16:27

OP don't give up. Write to him again, push for a meeting. We need to be really, really persistent.

You could send him the SAGES leaflet, those have been incredibly useful and have actually changed minds. sages.org.uk/

You could also tell him about how women are being shut down and silenced in so many ways: terfisaslur.com, Speakers corner, The Anarchist Book fair.

qumquat · 21/12/2017 16:46

All my MP said was 'I have noted your concerns'. No indication of his views on them or that he'd even read my email at all.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 21/12/2017 16:57

Trans people are very safe in the UK, unlike women.

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 17:35

qumquat

Can you write again and ask specific questions and say you'd like to meet to discuss these?

perfectly · 21/12/2017 18:05

Hey OP, I suggest widening your reading beyond the Mumsnet feminist chat boards. You may discover the Twilight zone is actually on here.

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 18:08

perfectly, which sites would you recommend please?

perfectly · 21/12/2017 18:11

Literally any media outlet at all. I'm a leftie so prefer the Guardian but even the Daily Mail would be a good start.

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 18:15

perfectly, what am I going to find in the Fail that's any good for anyone?!

AssassinatedBeauty · 21/12/2017 18:16

Laughing that anyone would actually write that the Daily Mail is a good place to start!

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 18:19

I'm of the opinion mail and guardian are equally shite! Would be a good twitter poll, who has spouted the most crap in the last 24 hrs, the mails, well the mail but the guardian has Owen Jones.....

perfectly · 21/12/2017 18:26

It might feel more peaceful to read about ordinary, harmless trans folk than the scary TRA blogs:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4678300/amp/First-man-birth-Britain-says-Scott-Parker.html

Floisme · 21/12/2017 18:27

I don't know of any other media outlet where open discussion and disagreement is allowed - certainly not The Guardian.

BatShite · 21/12/2017 18:29

You may discover the Twilight zone is actually on here.

This is about the only site that actually allows discussion of this issue. So yes, it does seem odd to start with when seeing actual discussion about trans stuff, rather than screeches of 'bigot' followed by bans and deletions. Even though some still try to scream bigot and run, without actually reading what people are actually saying. Seems much more fun to pretend people have said stuff they have not.

AssassinatedBeauty · 21/12/2017 18:31

You know the DM does those stories not to show people how ordinary and harmless trans people are? You know that they do those stories because they treat them like modern day carnival freak shows? It's all for click bait.

Plus it handily reinforces sex-based stereotypes as well, which is a bonus given how much they detest women.

BatShite · 21/12/2017 18:31

It might feel more peaceful to read about ordinary, harmless trans folk than the scary TRA blogs

Except, pretending that ordinary harmless trans folk are all that exist is actually dangerous to be quite honest. Lets pretend that there are absolutely no men (or even that there are only a couple...when its many many more) who would take advantage of this ridiculous proposed change in law. What good does this do anyone?

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 18:33

More than happy to share facilities with that person.

This one not so much:
www.google.co.uk/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5198017/amp/Transgender-model-23-convicted-Heathrow-security-row.html

I like my facilities sex segregated.

Both have implications for data collection though.

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 18:39

OP I've read this today

www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/joint-select/human-rights-committee/inquiries/parliament-2017/inquiry/

Which has reassured me that the need for debate is being recognised. The 'no platforming' has concerned people. Ultimately there will be a proper debate on this, you just do your bit in achieving that by continuing to write letters and ask questions.

perfectly · 21/12/2017 18:39

It was just a suggestion. The OP stated herself she is neither intelligent or articulate and the letter to her MP was solely based on what she has read on Mumsnet.

It just seems a shame she hasn't widened her reading outside of this chat board to get a more balanced view. It can't have been nice to get the response she did and I can see why she was surprised if she thought the opinions on here were the norm.

WTAFisthisshit · 21/12/2017 18:43

The OP has neither stated or come across as either unintelligent or inarticulate, she has stated not well educated which is a completely different thing and asked for help.

I find what you just said rude.

It has been well established on another thread that you are an MRA Troll, so I'm done here. Please go back and read my last reply on the other thread.

AssassinatedBeauty · 21/12/2017 18:48

Blimey @perfectly the OP comes across at least as intelligent and articulate as anyone else on this thread! How arrogant and patronising of you to described her like that.

Anyone who calls themselves a feminist but can suggest the Daily Mail as a place to widen their reading is seriously misguided.
