"Because you've had one night stands"...

Why can't YOU be a feminist?

I havent been told I can't be a feminist

But i was told by a friend that i had put womens rights back by 100 (yes 100...count em) years because i dont put petrol in the car

Single handed put rights back by 100 years!

LavenderJamMyArse · 18/12/2017 19:16

Well I think this is a great idea for a thread, and I’ve learned stuff from it already.

Unfortunately, it has never occurred to me before that the dairy and meat industry are inherently problematic for feminists, and that thought will stay with me forever now. Sad But...bacon...

Increasinglymiddleaged · 18/12/2017 19:22

I think that some women sadly see feminism as a competition. Unfortunately until women stand together and accept differences in opinions we will get nowhere. I've been told on here I'm not a feminist because I won't parrot the script. But I am because I believe in equality for women which we don't have as yet. That is what feminism is to me.

AssassinatedBeauty · 18/12/2017 19:27

@Increasinglymiddleaged I'd love to know what "the script" is! That sounds like something I might not stick to either!

RomansRevenge · 18/12/2017 20:01

Because I disagree with most of the feminism that’s discussed on here.

GoodLittleWoman · 18/12/2017 20:29

And what is that, Roman?

stilltheykeepcoming · 18/12/2017 20:49

Because I read the OP and saw the funny side Grin

losamsterdamos · 22/12/2017 14:16

because I have a husband and son and I wouldn't want my son to grow up in a world where he thinks he is stupid or inferior or to blame for everything wrong with the world.

NoFucksImAQueen · 22/12/2017 16:28

Or you have a penis. The end.
What? Of course you can be a feminist if you're a man. Men can want equality for men and women, it benefits them too

Ereshkigal · 22/12/2017 18:12

I don't think men can be feminists. They can be feminist allies, sure. But feminism needs to be wholly about women.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 22/12/2017 18:49

But feminism needs to be wholly about women.

is where I wont stick to the script for any still interested. On one hand they talk about the patriarchy and then on the next say feminism is just about women. It isn't, it is about how men behave not just women as victims of a 'social construct' and until men are considered as part of feminism nothing will change. But undoubtedly I'll now be told I'm not a feminist once again. Hmm

Elendon · 22/12/2017 19:40

If you describe vaginas as being hairy.

It's your pubis mons that has the most hair.

Vaginas are internal organs, like ears, although you can poke things into them, unlike ears - don't go poking in your ears. Like ears, vaginas are self cleansing.

NoFucksImAQueen · 22/12/2017 20:20

. But feminism needs to be wholly about women.

I strongly disagree. Feminism needs to be about everyone. It affects men too. For example, every man that was ever told not to show emotion because it's feminine.
These things impact all of us.

ASatisfyingThump · 22/12/2017 20:27

I was told I wasn't a feminist because I don't change light bulbs. It's true I don't change them, but it's purely practical - I have to faff about getting the step ladder out and putting it away after, but DH can reach by himself. I changed them when I lived alone!

annandale · 22/12/2017 20:28

Because i don't think feminism is a club, it's a way of analysing the world, so yes I think men can have a feminist viewpoint.

I have no interest in telling my son he's inferior but when he spouts 'humourless feminist' garbage from media outlets, I do talk to him about stereotypes and who benefits from disparaging feminism, and I do encourage him to question the 'facts' he is presented with.

BatShite · 22/12/2017 22:10

Apparently I can't be a feminist because I support trans people.

What do you mean by support?

I would say you cannot be a femnist if you actively oppose the rights of women to sex based protections. As so many who 'support' trans people seem to do.

JAPAB · 26/12/2017 17:48

Once saw someone claim that a women who has affairs with married or attached men can't be a feminist. Although I think if they have in the past but now repent, that is OK.

But then someone else said that Germaine Greer might not be the most sisterly of women in that respect, and no-one would dispute that she is a feminist. So that was that.
