Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Do women have the right to share their spaces with trans people if they wish to?

StigOfThePlump · 12/12/2017 03:26

I think this is an interesting question and one which I haven't seen asked before.

A lot of posters on here when discussing the GRA seem to align women's rights with fighting for women-only spaces. If, hypothetically, the majority of women were to be content to share their spaces with trans people is this also their right?

I don't mean 'anybody who self identifies as trans', I'm talking about genuine card carrying trans people and those who really want to live as their chosen sex (not those who want to prey on women).

My female friends

Now I know you're telling porkies...

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 12/12/2017 14:32

it's horrid that 0.00000625% of women are killed each week but I do believe it's getting better for the other 99%.

Quite apart from what callous twat this sentence makes you look - if you're a man why can't you do maths?

OlennasWimple · 12/12/2017 14:32

Stig - did #MeToo completely pass you by?

nauticant · 12/12/2017 14:40

I guess he was saying that there are many many women around these days so we're hardly going to miss couple.

BelligerentGardenPixies · 12/12/2017 14:59

For which other 99%?

Oh of white middle class women. No you're right it's a bit better for 99% of them so the rest of the global female population can just suck it up.

The boys have shared enough now, right? Time to be good girls and get on with sharing out the crumbs from the table instead of demanding more, I get it now.

shorty6768 · 12/12/2017 15:53

Nope. Because the rights of the most vulnerable should trump the wishes of the majority. Every time.

Beachcomber · 12/12/2017 15:56

Yeah nauticant, whats a couple of dead women a week, huh? Especially when the others are doing too jolly well for themselves alright.

Women! Earning money! And wanting to be alive! Whatever next!

SparklyUnicornTractors · 12/12/2017 16:14

a minority of women (same old culprits each time) revert to talking about 'women in dresses' and trying to think of clever ways to subvert trans people's language to annoy them.

I was going to inquire if you were planning to put the lower third in detention again for being silly little feminists, but then got to your 'it's horrid about women being murdered but' and frankly lost all patience.

You're a GF, you're also a dead bore. Not to mention demonstrating loudly and clearly the patronising, tedious shit women constantly have to absorb from men with a highly misguided sense of their own wit and superiority.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/12/2017 16:21

sparkly

I was stupidly doing that whole 'giving the benefit of the doubt' thing

Doh!!

Won't do it again

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 12/12/2017 16:32

I agree it's horrid that 0.00000625% of women are killed each week but I do believe it's getting better for the other 99%.

They have names Sad

OlennasWimple · 12/12/2017 16:49

The burden of austerity is falling disproportionately on women

British women suffer the worst gender pay gap in the EU

UK women have the second worst life expectancy in Western Europe

But yeah, "only" 2 a week are killed by their partners, so the rest of us should just shut up and be grateful with our improved position Angry

shorty6768 · 12/12/2017 16:50

I agree it's horrid that 0.00000625% of women are killed each week but I do believe it's getting better for the other 99%.

You mean the 2 women that are being murdered every single week by their partners?
You’re not fooling anyone with your attempt to devalue it by turning the statistic into a percentage, if it was a significant percentage it’d be genocide.
& btw out of the other 99% left there will be rape victims, sexual assault victims, fgm victims, honour killing victims, but what a great job you did setting the bar at dv murders.
Oh & ‘getting better’ is not synonymous with ‘good’, it is not a reason to disregard a woman’s rights to feel safe.

BatShite · 12/12/2017 16:51

If some women chose to then yes they have the right. What an odd question. I disagree with removing female only areas though. As many women DON"T want to change and such with male people present.

Clearly the answer to this is to have male, female and unisex spaces. It will take a while and older buildings may never catch up on it (given they still make excuses about disabled access Sad ) but new builds and such, its easy and would surely please everyone.

BatShite · 12/12/2017 16:52

I disagree with removing female only areas though.

*Even if 95% (it would definitely be lower but for the sake of argument) of women say they were happy with doing away with sex segregation, I still care about the 5%

Datun · 12/12/2017 16:55

its easy and would surely please everyone.

You’d think. But no.

Tranactivists go off quite alarming if suggest it. The answer always being “...transwomen are women why the hell should we be excluded from things belonging to women? That’s the same argument as segregating black people. Call yourself a feminist? If you’re not intersectional, you’re not a feminist”.

To which the answer is always feminism does not intersect with a penis. And so it goes on.

BatShite · 12/12/2017 16:56

I've noticed that 'card carrying' transsexual transwomen tend not to demand access to female spaces in the same aggressive way as transgenderists.

Yes this is a great point actually. I know a couple of transwomen who have had full SRS. One, despite having the full op, uses male ones (or usually, avoids sex segregated areas full stop when possible tbh) because they know they do not pass at all and they do not wish to make women uncomfortable. This seems to be about the majority consensus with actual transsexual people tbh. They DO care about others. Where 'transgender' people (and especially TRAs) tend to only care about themselves.

BatShite · 12/12/2017 16:57

feminism does not intersect with a penis.

Grin What a lovely turn of phrase

OlennasWimple · 12/12/2017 17:11

Tsk, Datun, you are wrong!

Lily Madigan helpfully tweeted the other day that "The reality is intersectionality is the ideal way to create women’s equality. Otherwise we risk alienating subsections of womanhood. This has been shown many times", so that you can learn how to do feminism better.

You're welcome!

BelligerentGardenPixies · 12/12/2017 17:13

Oh and I love the "women spend most", inferring that as a class, they can't possibly be short of financial resources (and of course, can't be trusted with financial things cos they are overspending lushes), whilst conveniently not asking the questions like who and what are they spending the money on and what percentage is spent on purely individual, luxury items and how does it compare to male spending habits.

We both contribute financially but I spend far more than my husband because I buy ALL the family essential items; food, clothes, extra curricular etc (including his) four six people and he buys for himself.

Datun · 12/12/2017 17:14

That’s just My Penis by any other name!

IrkThePurist · 12/12/2017 18:03

Do women have the right to share their spaces with trans people if they wish to?

Dr Radfem was kicked out of Labour's Women's Network party, so the answer is no.

AsMenDclaredWomenTheirInferior · 13/12/2017 04:21

@Beachcomber
Next Stig will be saying
"You western women aren't oppressed, you go to Saudi Arabia and see how we men treat you there?"

blackdoggotmytongue · 13/12/2017 04:39

stig, did you see my posts about our student accommodation? No need for you to fret, love. Women HAVE to share their bedrooms with transwomen unless the transwomen self identify as such and opt for gender inclusive housing. If they state they are women, they get put in a female room. Makes no difference who their room share is. Muslim, rape survivor, whatever. Those pesky women will just have to suck it up (as Danielle Muscato would say).
Chat about that with all your successful and still living female friends.
THIS is what self identification means.

nooka · 13/12/2017 04:39

As Stig clearly cares only for himself I wonder how he'd feel in the gym where a transman was recently asked not to use the mens changing room. This individual was apparently three years into transition, so probably was 'card carrying' but had no surgery so pretty obviously a naked woman. I'm not at all surprised it made the male gym users incredibly uncomfortable. Likely no safety concerns were raised but a very different outcome to the norm.

It is very clear from these threads that lots of people just don't care about women and girls, which kinda is how it has always been throughout history.

Just gonna have to hoist that feminist flag up and keep fighting.
