A Spartacus letter re Jo Cox Leadership

NettleTea · 01/12/2017 12:33

as many have expressed dismay at the events unfolding we are creating our response to the letter passed around. The letter will be available to share in a document with signatures including representatives of many of the women's groups pushing for consultation. If anybody wishes to have their name / position held added to the document please PM me. If you just wish to add your support, just comment here and keep it going.

In sisterhood

We are ordinary women, some of us Labour Party members, the rest of us potential Labour Party voters. We know that sexism and sexist messages received from birth mean we are less likely to push ourselves forward, to be listened to, to take the lead and have belief in our abilities, especially in a male-dominated sphere such as politics. Whatever our differences, this is an experience that unites women in society and is exactly why the Jo Cox Leadership programme is needed – to bolster self-esteem and confidence and work towards building a toolkit in preparation for political life.

The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. We understand that graduates will feel a loyalty to the programme and its decisions. We hope they also feel a responsibility to reflect the diversity of women’s opinions in the party and wider society, and will use their leadership roles to ensure women are consulted about the things that affect us, whether Conservative Party proposals to review the Gender Recognition Act or Labour Party mechanisms to increase women's participation in political life.

Several pages of people have already 'virtual signed' the letter. It's not possible to change the text of a open letter after publication in this way. There are also good reasons for not doing so. Female = female and use of exemptions is clear.

I agree with Superlandlady. Letter needs to be tightened up. When the Labour Party believes men can be women, you have to be very careful with words. It needs spelling out that the Jo Cox programme should be for natal women only.

Because taken to its logical extreme, equality in Parliament could be achieved by 650 men, provided 325 of them say they feel like a woman.

I agree with what you are trying to say and I am a Labour Party member.

Stopmakingsense · 01/12/2017 22:08

I agree

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 01/12/2017 22:09

I agree

Sillydoggy · 01/12/2017 22:16

I agree -I can’t even consider voting labour any more with the misogyny that they display so openly and unashamedly now.

TheBatPig · 01/12/2017 22:29

I agree. Will not be voting Labour for this reason. Have written to my mp twice and had what I think is a generic response. Can't give real name unfortunately.

Halebeke425 · 01/12/2017 22:55

I agree, also a labour party member.

SeaWitchly · 01/12/2017 23:08

I am a committed Labour party member who campaigned in the last election and regularly donates to the party coffers.
I also agree.
I will still vote Labour in the next GE as I think Jeremy Corbyn has it right on many issues facing the UK and is genuinely wanting to make things better for 'the many'... but I am very disappointed that he has apparently bought into the Gender Identification bollocks and I am concerned that womens voices are being disregarded and ignored, like the many us that are concerned that a 19 year transwoman who until very recently identified as male is thought fit to represent women and their issues within the party.

grafittiartist · 01/12/2017 23:24

I agree. Labour member here.

Clonakiltylil · 01/12/2017 23:52

Please could I be added too? Thank you.

Trailedanderror · 02/12/2017 00:08

Sorry if this has been mentioned and I've missed it but I'm pretty sure there's a transwoman already in the scheme.

PlonitbatPlonit · 02/12/2017 00:33

Yup, spotted that "The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. "

WTAFisthisshit · 02/12/2017 06:09

I spotted that it had been signed by Anna Lee. The actual woman who signed that letter, it will dog their careers in the same way that association with support of Pie has dogged Harriet Harman's. Maybe that's the point Sad once again women under a bus.

Regressionconfession · 02/12/2017 06:26

I agree

BonjourMinou · 02/12/2017 07:46

I agree.

I’m a floating voter with no loyalty to any one party, I vote for whoever I feel would support the country best at each election.

I vote in memory of our sister suffragettes who fought so hard for our right to vote.

I voted labour at the last election.

I have no idea who I would vote for now. Unless a party starts actually supporting women i would be tempted to ruin my vote. Sad

Trailedanderror · 02/12/2017 08:24

Anna Lee is on the programme already- attends the empowering, bonding sessions with the other young ambitious political women. Laughs hollowly.
