A Spartacus letter re Jo Cox Leadership

NettleTea · 01/12/2017 12:33

as many have expressed dismay at the events unfolding we are creating our response to the letter passed around. The letter will be available to share in a document with signatures including representatives of many of the women's groups pushing for consultation. If anybody wishes to have their name / position held added to the document please PM me. If you just wish to add your support, just comment here and keep it going.

In sisterhood

We are ordinary women, some of us Labour Party members, the rest of us potential Labour Party voters. We know that sexism and sexist messages received from birth mean we are less likely to push ourselves forward, to be listened to, to take the lead and have belief in our abilities, especially in a male-dominated sphere such as politics. Whatever our differences, this is an experience that unites women in society and is exactly why the Jo Cox Leadership programme is needed – to bolster self-esteem and confidence and work towards building a toolkit in preparation for political life.

The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. We understand that graduates will feel a loyalty to the programme and its decisions. We hope they also feel a responsibility to reflect the diversity of women’s opinions in the party and wider society, and will use their leadership roles to ensure women are consulted about the things that affect us, whether Conservative Party proposals to review the Gender Recognition Act or Labour Party mechanisms to increase women's participation in political life.

I agree.
We live in a patriarchy. It's not a level playing field. And this is another way to remove women's opportunities.

Please everybody write to your MP about this. I work for an MP and we have had NO letters or emails about trans gender stuff at all. Make it a personal letter, don't copy and paste.
MPs don't realise how strongly people feel unless they get letters/emails.
Personal letters are far more effective than petitions/ 38 degrees stuff.
Please- write to your MP.

HermioneWeasley · 01/12/2017 18:28

I agree. I’m not a Labour Party member though

Another party member - I agree ... strongly.

PositivelyPERF · 01/12/2017 18:42

Thank you for clarifying that Nettle. I hope you can understand why I was concerned.

ferntwist · 01/12/2017 18:43

I agree. I just wanted to echo exactly that - I gave out leaflets for Labour at the last election but will not vote for them unless this is resolved.

Backingvocals · 01/12/2017 18:44

I agree and have already resigned my membership over this. Told them so too but they don’t care.

Can’t seem to PM but would willingly share my name for the letter.

Thermostatpolice · 01/12/2017 18:49

I agree.

Sex and gender are not the same thing.

LivininaBox · 01/12/2017 18:52

Sorry if I am being thick but I don't understand the letter. If you are objecting to the decision made about the programme, why aren't you saying "we regret the decision" or asking for the decision to be reversed?

BubbleLamp · 01/12/2017 18:53

I agree

DoctorTwo · 01/12/2017 19:00

I agree.

I am a Labour Party Member .

Superlandlady · 01/12/2017 19:46

Sorry to be critical but that final para is not clear enough.

I was expecting it to state clearly that the Jo Cox programme should be reserved for born-women ONLY.

But the language used is so woolly that I am not sure what that final para actually means.

So I cannot sign until it says clearly that the Jo Cox programme should be reserved for born-women ONLY.

Superlandlady · 01/12/2017 19:47

I agree with Livininabox

Notonyournellly · 01/12/2017 19:51

I agree

FairPlayForWomen · 01/12/2017 20:04

Signed.
Thank you for doing this, Nettle.

I agree with two suggestions above:

"The systematic oppression of women and girls under patriarchy is predicated on sex and implemented through the imposition of gender roles"

It needs to be clarified.

And that a sentence could be inserted to the effect of:

"... permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. Women-only programmes should be restricted to females. We understand. ..."

MissBax · 01/12/2017 20:13

I agree ♥ will PM

busyboysmum · 01/12/2017 20:15

I agree also that the letter needs to be tightened up.
