A Spartacus letter re Jo Cox Leadership

NettleTea · 01/12/2017 12:33

as many have expressed dismay at the events unfolding we are creating our response to the letter passed around. The letter will be available to share in a document with signatures including representatives of many of the women's groups pushing for consultation. If anybody wishes to have their name / position held added to the document please PM me. If you just wish to add your support, just comment here and keep it going.

In sisterhood

We are ordinary women, some of us Labour Party members, the rest of us potential Labour Party voters. We know that sexism and sexist messages received from birth mean we are less likely to push ourselves forward, to be listened to, to take the lead and have belief in our abilities, especially in a male-dominated sphere such as politics. Whatever our differences, this is an experience that unites women in society and is exactly why the Jo Cox Leadership programme is needed – to bolster self-esteem and confidence and work towards building a toolkit in preparation for political life.

The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. We understand that graduates will feel a loyalty to the programme and its decisions. We hope they also feel a responsibility to reflect the diversity of women’s opinions in the party and wider society, and will use their leadership roles to ensure women are consulted about the things that affect us, whether Conservative Party proposals to review the Gender Recognition Act or Labour Party mechanisms to increase women's participation in political life.

I agree

RustyParker · 01/12/2017 16:29

I agree.

Not a Labour party member but have aways voted Labour. But I can't vote for Labour going forward if women and girls are being thrown under the bus by Labour.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 01/12/2017 16:31

I agree completely with the sentiment, though the language could be sharper. It's too nice!

Completely agree. I think it's a bit woolly if I'm completely honest. I'm not clear what we're asking for. But I'm with you 100%.

SporadicSpartacus · 01/12/2017 16:31

I agree.

I don’t generally vote, but if a mainstream party unequivocally came out in support of the rights of biological females, I would break my abstaining streak and vote for them. Even Labour, and they are not my usual political cuppa at all.

I agree.

I am a labour voter.

Labour won't receive my vote again until they stop treating women and girls like expendable political fodder.

I'm shocked at so many women being happy to send their real names to a stranger on the Internet, especially as there are so many TIMs that would be happy to out real women that don't agree with their fantasies/lies.

I'm not saying you're one, OP, just shocked at posters naivety.

PlonitbatPlonit · 01/12/2017 17:48

No one is compelled to do so. Lots of people know who NettleTea is in real life (from other posts).

NettleTea · 01/12/2017 17:54

Ive outed myself completely on previous threads, so most people here can verify who I am. I am also deleting all messages I get. But yes, thats why we are happy to have people just say 'I agree' if they dont wish to do that.

Once we hit a certain number of names the letter will be in a format that will allow it to be shared on FB and twitter and on each of the pages that any of the women's groups involved run. I can edit the document and add in more names, so although we hope that support will be gained in here, simply by the strength of the MN voice, it will spread further that just this forum. We had to start somewhere, as as the MN Feminism board was where I was first made aware of this subject, it seemed the place to start.

We may not be Jo Cox cohorts, but our voices are each just as important.

I agree. I voted Labour at the last election and you will not have my vote again until you start protecting the rights of women and girls.

GirlScout72 · 01/12/2017 18:19

I agree. I cancelled my Labour party membership and I'm never voting for them again until they sort this utter offense to women out. Men can not be women, and they do not get to take a woman's place on special programmes like this.
