as many have expressed dismay at the events unfolding we are creating our response to the letter passed around. The letter will be available to share in a document with signatures including representatives of many of the women's groups pushing for consultation. If anybody wishes to have their name / position held added to the document please PM me. If you just wish to add your support, just comment here and keep it going.

In sisterhood

We are ordinary women, some of us Labour Party members, the rest of us potential Labour Party voters. We know that sexism and sexist messages received from birth mean we are less likely to push ourselves forward, to be listened to, to take the lead and have belief in our abilities, especially in a male-dominated sphere such as politics. Whatever our differences, this is an experience that unites women in society and is exactly why the Jo Cox Leadership programme is needed – to bolster self-esteem and confidence and work towards building a toolkit in preparation for political life.

The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. We understand that graduates will feel a loyalty to the programme and its decisions. We hope they also feel a responsibility to reflect the diversity of women’s opinions in the party and wider society, and will use their leadership roles to ensure women are consulted about the things that affect us, whether Conservative Party proposals to review the Gender Recognition Act or Labour Party mechanisms to increase women's participation in political life.

I am a lifelong Labour voter, from a Labour voting family. I don't feel conformable giving my vote to them with the current state of the party. Something has to give. One party surely has to show they actually give a tiny bit of a shit about the rights of women. We are 50% of the population for gods sake..

I agree

LangCleg · 01/12/2017 14:46

My personally view is that the tories are just trying to prove how far they've come since clause 28. I don't think it will actually go through under them, I think they're just trying to retain voters who could defect to labour over it iyswim.

I think it's easy points for the Tories, too. One thing I am sure of - you won't find any TIMs in any Tory leadership programmes. I think they are using it as a trap for Labour.

I agree.

I also think we need a letter run past legal, political and medical (can volunteer there as I know others can and they are perphaps still practicing) eyes and perhaps laid out on a static page - even a free blogspot. Not that I don't think this isn't fantastic but I wonder if it will be taken more seriously if isn't "just" seen as a forum effort - I know a lot of people (including politicians) have not the foggiest about them and think they are breeding grounds for trolls and idiots.

Not that I think there should be a distancing from this forum by the way. I just now work in a field that deals with people who won't even cast an eye over anything associated with the word "forum".

It's easier to circulate one site than a sub forum.

You can put my name to that. There is no political party that gives a damn about 50% of the population.

BahHumbygge · 01/12/2017 16:19

I agree

Left-leaning voter here who would potentially vote Labour, but for gender identity politics.

THIS:

"The systematic oppression of women and girls under patriarchy is predicated on sex and implemented through the imposition of gender roles"

Gender and sex needs to stop being conflated in policy and discourse. That is the root of the problem we're facing. Sex specific based protections need to be sacrosanct, while protecting gender non-conforming people from harassment and discrimination.
