I just wanted to start to say thank you to some of those who have given me the courage to begin to speak out, too. The calmness and persistence in the face of absolute hate and vileness is really something. (And it must become very tiring to know that when you google your own name, the search box will autofill "...should die in a fire", so I wanted to add something psoitive to the mix!)

There's lots here on mumsnet that I am grateful to, but I will start with people I got to know elsewhere first.

Linda Bellos. I have only seen her name recently on this issue, but she's been inspiring me since I was a teenage radical, so very long ago. I can't tell you how happy I am that she is here and still fighting. Linda, thank you.

Glosswitch. She was one of the first they went for. She's brilliant and brave and funny and I am so glad she's writing. Glossy, thank you.

Sarah Ditum. Also funny and brilliant and calm and persistent. If you haven't signed up for her tinyletter, I suggest you do so immediately! Sarah, thank you.

Claire Heuchan. Fantastic, thoughtful, insightful writer. Also introduced me to the fact that the Glasgow Women's Library exists! Claire, thank you.

Miranda Yardley. Calm, devastating, and unbelievably persistent. Currently filleting Peter Tatchell on twitter. Miranda, thank you.

There's plenty more, and I'll add them later, bit by bit, but I wanted to get a start. I have begun threads to express my disappointment and anger at those that have drunk the kool-aid, so I thought I'd come here and express my joy and gratitude to those that are standing up for women. I hope this can become a long list!

And anyone's non-appearance on it doesn't mean they aren't wonderful or their work isn't appreciated, it just means they aren't known to me. This isn't a list of any in-crowd, and shouldn't be read as such. We're all doing what we can!

Gaaaaaaah that Shon Faye article gives me the rage. Faye is all "where are the calls not to have male prison gards in women's prisons?" If Faye - who claims to be a prison abolitionist - knew anything at all about women's activism, Faye would know that women have been campaigning about male prison guards in prison forever. I was going to meetings about this decades ago, when male prison officers were first introduced.

But to the likes of Shon Faye, if women did it, then it was insignificant.

But back on to the positive, because bloody Shon has made me derail.

I am so happy that Janice Turner is writing, not least because it really helps having this sort of writing in the Times, where decision-makers will see it. Thank you, Janice.

Yes, let's stick to the positive, because all these great women and men are doing their best to highlight what is wrong with current trans activism via their writings/books, media and social media.

Datun · 27/11/2017 11:28

Shon Faye is a misogynist.

Thank you thread for those standing up for women

Yes, let's stick to the positive,

Yes, you’re right. Just got distracted from the point of the thread.

ArcheryAnnie · 27/11/2017 11:36

Oh, oh, oh - Louise Pennington, whose writing has made sense to me for a long time. Her writing blog is brilliant. Thank you Louise.

Mary Wollstonecraft.

And yes! to Louise Pennington.

Bejazzled · 27/11/2017 12:08

I was completely oblivious about the threat to women until I started reading these threads. Now I tell others who are oblivious and do my very little bit to raise awareness.

TBH, I am nervous/scared/appalled at the accepted erosion of women/woman and how it will continue.

ScrambledSmegs · 27/11/2017 14:52

Precis of my earlier post that I asked to be deleted, edited.

YY to everyone mentioned above. Including but not exclusively the sterling work done by Transgender Trend, 4th Wave Now, Fair Play for Women, Women's Place plus other websites/bloggers I've forgotten.

Magdalen Berns and PeachYoghurt on Youtube for making us laugh whilst making great points.

All the journalists writing great articles and taking flak from some really unpleasant people.

And Dittany. Thanks to her I realised what was really going on, and it's much bigger and more complicated than many of us realise.

woman11017 · 27/11/2017 16:02

Rachel Cusk, Susan Maushart and Anne Oakley.

I miss Dittany Sad

BertrandRussell · 27/11/2017 18:54

Oh, I miss Dittany too......

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 27/11/2017 20:02

I tweeted Lucy a link to the thread so she didn't miss it. She said it was wonderful Grin.

therealposieparker · 28/11/2017 13:19

God, yes to Magdalen and Peachy!!

And again Dittany.... I wish she'd come back!!

ArcheryAnnie · 28/11/2017 13:25

Magdalen Berns' videos are just so funny and so clever. Her absolutely deadpan, don't-give-a-fuck delivery is perfect. (Thank you, Magdalen.)

People do know that Magdalen has been/still is very ill? Sad

Although maybe a bit off topic, I also wanted to thank Ronan Farrow for his relentless and quality reporting which shows exactly why we need women only spaces and protections.

ArcheryAnnie · 28/11/2017 14:25

I've just bought Robert Webb's book for my teenage DS, and am reminded how outspoken he's been on this. And it shouldn't need a man, or a celebrity, to make the case for women-only spaces in order for us to be able to retain them, but I can't deny it's incredibly useful and helpful when they do. So thank you, Robert.

Y y to Robert. Reminds me I was going to get for Dh for Xmas.

Ekphrasis · 28/11/2017 15:05

Javid Abdelmoneim for the no boys or girls bbc programme (did he do the research?) And who ever helped him!

ArcheryAnnie · 28/11/2017 15:44

Blimey, Bertrand, that's really tough. I hope she's recovering as well as you might from something like that.

Very sadly, Magdalen has an astrocytoma, which is not curable (I am not speculating - she has said this on Twitter). This is a life-limiting condition, although let's hope she has the slowly progressing type.

It's extremely sad but, as ever, she is inspirational in how she has responded.
