Lily Madigan, TIM, elected Labour women's officer

Lily is 19. Lily was instrumental in the hate campaign against Anne Ruzylo which resulted in her standing down.

You have to be a woman to be women’s officer but ‘The Labour councillor said that “lived experience as a woman” should be considered an advantage — but not a prerequisite — for the role of women’s officer.’

Lily could also have gone for the LGBT officer role but they didn’t want that. No, they wanted to show women that they can shit all over them and we will applaud them for doing it.

I’m absolutely furious about this ( as you can probably tell)

The confusing of sex and gender is fantastically effective. It means that the TRAs can say "of course we are not campaigning on the basis of switching sex*, it's switching gender that's our thing" while pushing for something that in reality works as a change in sex.

If opponents counter-argue "this is about switching sex" the TRAs can respond "no, you don't understand, it's changing gender" and if the opponents object to a change in gender, they get themselves in a right mess, particularly if their base position is that gender is a construct.

  • in some contexts but will aggressively state exactly the opposite in others
Elendon · 21/11/2017 15:14

But no one is arguing that the GRA is about switching sex, as most 'ordinary people' know this isn't possible, because basic biology.

It's all about gender.

pisacake · 21/11/2017 15:16

The GRA says that you acquire the new sex in all respects. So it's both, in reality.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2017 15:32

There are so many questions I'd love the answers to- for example, how did this all happen so quickly? Why are so many "conservative institutions rolling over so easily? Who's behind it? And who is benefitting from it?

Collidascope · 21/11/2017 15:44

I'm surprised how little this story is actually being covered. I can't see it in the Mail or Telegraph, and would have thought they'd love an opportunity to give Labour a kicking.

nauticant · 21/11/2017 15:56

I do wonder whether they see at the heart of the story someone who is young and possibly vulnerable and have decided it's best to steer clear. Although I realise they're not normally known for their sensitivity about sticking the boot in, for this story I'd be wary about what could possibly happen if it became really high profile.

pisacake · 21/11/2017 16:07

I don't think the DM would distinguish between a 19 year old and a 39 year old for the purposes of sticking the boot in, if they felt inclined to do so.

OlennasWimple · 21/11/2017 16:34

They were happy to stick the boot into Jared O'Mara (who is vulnerable in other ways)...

Regarding the whole sex/ gender thing; my son had the flu spray at school. The form asked for gender rather than sex. This is inappropriate imo in a primary school for two reasons - a very few parents may not know whether to put gender identified or sex, and secondly, including this on medical forms generally could have implications for the the health of the (adult) patient in light of the fact that some medicines are processed differently by men and women biologically, even a person who has had the operations and hormones etc may process it differently due to their genes. Probably quite a clumsy argument but I felt confused when it said gender. (But then mn has educated me well in the difference between the two!)

Albadross · 21/11/2017 18:49

What if we all change our names to ‘woman’ just to make things even more complicated?

Then I’m Woman the cis woman so I’ve got two woman’s and two I better than one!

TiredOfThisAll · 21/11/2017 19:11

Oh f*ckity fuck. I am receiving support from Rape Crisis. It is a woman I am talking to. No way would I talk to a person who might still have a penis.

But then I feel bad for saying that because there are some lovely trans women out there who totally get why I would not be comfortable doing this; whereas the support agencies themselves appear not to. They rely on donations, women rely on them. It is a lose-lose situation if they are no longer protected same sex spaces to please one group and those who are displeased (rightly in my opinion) stop donating.

My head hurts. We would all love for women not to have to need these support organisations at all. Maybe the TRAs and their allies could put their minds to that.

The question is why this has so much traction? Are there any historical precedents? I struggle to make sense of it.

Ekphrasis, on that form I crossed out gender and wrote sex!

TiredOfThisAll · 21/11/2017 20:55

Morning thank you, no, I had not thought of that. I did not know your details could be kept confidential. I might write something, although I have only just started to talk about it.

Ekphrasis · 21/11/2017 20:57

I very nearly did dis.... and should have!

BelligerentGardenPixies · 21/11/2017 21:02

Distaffside - so did I.

Women need to start pulling their support, be that financial, practical or emotional for any and all institutions that are hell bent on colluding with this erasure of us. #nodebate? Fucking fine by me but there will also be no money and no campaigning, no votes, no stuffing envelopes, no walking door to door and all the other thankless shite that women do to prop up the systems of men. We have to stop colluding with it.

There are no parties that I would currently vote for although I will turn out in any election, I will hitherto be spoiling my vote with the female symbol written with a red sharpie.

Superlandlady · 21/11/2017 21:02

To be eligible for election to any office within the Labour Party, a person must be a member for one year. Why was Lily Madigan allowed to break this rule?

OlennasWimple · 21/11/2017 21:12

Good question, Superlandlady. It all looks very Hmm

Superlandlady · 21/11/2017 21:15

Oh no. Turns out they changed it to 3 months.

Xenophile · 21/11/2017 21:17

Madigan was backed by Momentum.

Colour me shocked.

MillicentFawcett · 21/11/2017 21:44

How convenient @superlandlady Hmm

Pantah630 · 21/11/2017 21:50

ekphrasis I seem to be continually crossing out gender and writing sex on DS2s school form, state grammar Hmm

BatShite · 21/11/2017 22:03

Both that rule, and the rule about the post having to be filled by a woman. As it says on Labours own job description. Lily really is special eh...

ArcheryAnnie · 21/11/2017 22:12

Belligerent I've just (in the past fortnight) changed my will to cut out a major charity that has knuckled under to this, and I am currently trying to write a letter telling them this. I am close to penniless in my day to day life, but because I own a flat and am insured up to the eyeballs, I am worth a lot more dead than alive, so they will be missing out on a decent chunk of money. I've had them in my will for fifteen years.
