RAGE - is it just me?

Slimthistime · 04/11/2017 00:00

Is it just me who has so much rage at the moment? I am not surprised that so many men are a problem but sadly being a lifelong cynic about them isn't helping my rage level.

It’s not about whether men’s feelings get heard. Being shouty and aggressive to all men, despite the large majority not being rapists, will just lead to you not being taken seriously, which doesn’t help future victims in any way.

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2017 06:20

"Being shouty and aggressive to all men, despite the large majority not being rapists, will just lead to you not being taken seriously, which doesn’t help future victims in any way."

Amazing how many versions of "women, you just need to be nicer there are, isn't it?

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 07/11/2017 07:03

Damson, that is exactly what they told the suffragettes. Good job they didn't listen isn't it, phew! Smile

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 07/11/2017 07:05

Damson, there is a man who murdered a woman having his music promoted on a magazine in France. Gosh, that really ruined his career didn't it...

Thelilywhite · 07/11/2017 08:42

Damson
two out of 65 million isn’t an epidemic. If it is, then how would we even begin to describe the situation regarding road deaths!
I strongly disagree with this comment. I consider it totally insensitive to the two women per week who die at the hands of men . It is not in any way comparable to road deaths. Road deaths are accidents- women are assaulted and murdered on purpose - by men.

DamsonInDistressss

Individuals murder people, not “men”, and most of these individuals are not reflective of society as a whole. My hubby helps put these people behind bars.

Sorry, no. Individuals do not murder men. Men murder men.

98% of sexually violent crime is committed by men. 90% of violent crime is committed by men.

There are more male sexual offenders in prison that there are women inmates as a whole.

To say that violence is not sex specific is ludicrous.

To expect women not to be angry about it is misogynistic.

Knusper · 07/11/2017 09:05

Damson There has been improvement in some areas of women's lives, e.g. employment (as you point out).

But in terms of sexual assault and harassment I think that there are actually extra challenges for my DDs' generation in comparison to ours. Easy access to Internet porn warping expectations. A move towards stricter gender stereotyping. Women-only spaces under threat. The widespread, mutually reinforced shaming of assaulted women via endless media outlets and comment sections.

I'd be amazed if the rate of sexual assault has gone down since I was a teenager. Especially as we know that many assaults go unreported and conviction rates remain low. And that the prevailing male culture of entitlement hasn't changed.

Thelilywhite · 07/11/2017 09:07

Not according to this mornings news. Women still being sacked because of pregnancy , maternity leave or on returning to work after mat leave.

Knusper · 07/11/2017 09:15

thelilywhite not even that then. Depressing. But at least we have a legal right to mat leave now. My DM automatically lost her job when she had a baby in the 70s and nobody batted an eyelid.

Datun · 07/11/2017 09:17

The number of rapes recorded is increasing. Not going down.

But convictions don’t correlate with the numbers of crimes recorded, funnily enough.

*The number of reported rapes has risen by 123% since 2011/12. Over the same period convictions rose only 11%•

Alwaysinmyheart · 07/11/2017 14:31

FFS can’t we even have a thread saying we feel ( legitimately) angry and upset, without it being derailed and having to justify ourselves?? Angry

Just today, I watched This Morning and they had a segment on sexual abuse, 2 women rang up to say they had been drugged and then ( presumably, as they didn’t actually know what had happened to them ), sexually assaulted. They were sobbing down the phone, one hadn’t told anyone and the other had to move away from the area.

This kind of shit happens every day, so yes I am fucking angry! Angry

SomeDyke · 07/11/2017 17:23

This kind of shit happens every day, so yes I am fucking angry!

Perfectly okay and understandable to be angry. We should be angry.

When hearing the 'people kill people' line, I keep being reminded of the 'guns don't kill people, people do' line from the guns advocates in the US. Because we know for example, that you can kill more people with a semi-automatic rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition that you can, say, with a kitchen knife. This is a reliable statement of fact. Just as you can reliably say that 90-odd percent of violent crimes are committed not by people in general, but by men. Statistically, if you had to chose, who is a greater risk to you, a random man, or a random woman? We know the answer, we're just supposed to pretend that it isn't true. Just as we're not supposed to count how many women have been killed by men this year, this month, this week..................

partystress · 07/11/2017 22:29

Just heard the ITV newsreader say "the harassment scandal has taken a more serious turn". Relating to the suicide of the Welsh Assembly member who had been accused. As if it had not been serious until a man indisputably suffered. I am not minimising the awful tragedy of anyone's suicide, but were the abandoned careers, feelings of intimidation and helplessness, breakdowns, years of self-blame and shame that all the victims of these despicable people not serious?!

Alwaysinmyheart · 07/11/2017 22:46

Personally I think if he hadn’t done some serious shit he was scared of coming out, he wouldn’t have killed himself. Yet again, it’s going to be women’s fault that a man’s reputation and career has been ruined, it’s all a witch hunt and it’s gone too far.

How about, men stop fucking abusing women and know that now you do there WILL be serious consequences for this shit??

BatShite · 08/11/2017 06:05

Individuals murder people, not “men”
I’m more worried about my brother on nights out tbh. There are a lot more men who’ll headbutt another man for looking at him funny than there are who’ll rape a women.

End result of this? STILL male violence Hmm

Male violence against women, Male violence against men.

Yes, NAMALT. We know. But enouge men are that it is enough to name the problem. That is, male violence.

BatShite · 08/11/2017 06:06

enough*

Knusper · 08/11/2017 06:13

Completely agree, Batshite.

BatShite · 08/11/2017 06:18

To say that violence is not sex specific is ludicrous.

To expect women not to be angry about it is misogynistic.

To tell people who are raging about how widely accepted and epidemic male violence is that they will not be taken seriously and are not helping future victims is just pure goadyfuckery.

Wow. Just wow.

And no OP. Its definitely not just you. I am increasingly raging. And those who excuse and enable this appear to be growing in numbers too. Which is truly upsetting.

Slimthistime · 08/11/2017 11:15

Thanks to those who get it

I have insomnia and I had to stop myself raging more on the Topshop thread at 4am!

I did go on Twitter and was really bugged to see some comments about Priti Patel, made by people who really should know better, not just bots and random crazies, and they were comments that would no way be made about Boris King of Idiots.

I think there is a risk Patel will be sacked, Theresa will resign and Boris will take over as PM.

There's no point starting another thread I suppose, so here's my current feeling - why am I bothering? hardly anyone cares if women's rights are erased. I don't have children. I do have major involvement with a friend's daughter but sadly the mother increasingly doesn't care either and she's never "done" politics or cared about feminism. The father is such a terrible man I no longer speak to him, I sort of hope the daughter will do the same eventually, but she's not my child anyway.

I'm not sure why I'm fighting this battle any more. And then I suppose I shouldn't use MN as a way of judging but - warning, offensive remark coming up - the level of pathetic judgement I see on here, especially on Relationships, just makes me think a lot of women want to be slaves to men and keep on having babies to whom they can preach the same shit.

I'm starting to wonder if it's best to just try and enjoy my life - I don't mix with many men, I don't make friends with actual anti-feminists, i should just live quietly and hope for an apocalypse or something. I just don't know any more.

PS I used to think it was mad when you hear about people donating whole estates to donkey sanctuaries etc but I am beginning to see the point. Human beings are fucking useless.

Party "but were the abandoned careers, feelings of intimidation and helplessness, breakdowns, years of self-blame and shame that all the victims of these despicable people not serious?!"

Quite. When all this started, I actually wondered who would be the first to top themselves and almost in the same second realised there would be an outcry about that and that women would be blamed for it.

Totally agree. My heart sank even further when I heard the news yesterday. Terrible for his family etc but I just knew this would be ammunition for the 'witch hunt' brigade who will be up in arms about the poor men who are now actually DYING because of these harpies who just need to toughen up.

Jo Brand was marvellous, as always, on HIGNFY. And the all male panel just sat there and looked at her. No 'well said Jo' or 'quite right Jo'. Blank faces all round. Fucking idiots. The audience clapped and whooped though

Anger and rage and exhaustion are nothing to be ashamed of under these circumstances. They're entirely sane reactions

Slimthistime · 08/11/2017 11:39

Lotta "Anger and rage and exhaustion are nothing to be ashamed of under these circumstances."

thank you. I'm not ashamed but I worry for myself, it's like so many women don't care about this, should I pack away my feelings for the sake of my own health, switch off all media etc etc.

I always think that's an irresponsible course of action for parents but as I'm not leaving anyone behind to battle the world, maybe it's okay for me.

OP posts:
Lottapianos · 08/11/2017 13:08

Slim, I'm glad to hear you're not ashamed. Far too many men and women have been putting all their energy into shaming us these past couple of weeks.

Slimthistime · 08/11/2017 13:28

Lotta, yes, men and women

which in turn makes me wonder if I'm trying to fight for something the majority of women don't want anyway.
