J.K.Rowling *might* be a Terf...

And I am delighted!

Okay, there is a tiny bit of evidence that JK may be gender critical. She 'liked' a gender critical post on Twitter, and the TRAs are going mental over it. JK hasn't responded yet (and I doubt she will)

In other news, Jenna Jameson (famous porn star) has also 'come out' as gender critical!

Is the tide turning? If we get JK on our side, then yes!

It's not a generational thing. I grew up reading Harry Potter but I don't think that JK Rowling is worth listening to unless you are look for advise on writing children's books. Sure if she was a writer of great skill and merit I might be interested to hear what she thought but I still wouldn't care/allow that to influence me. She's not a great intellectual of our time and she is not an expert on the matter so it's odd that anyone would care.

Ttbb · 25/10/2017 22:45

*advice, dear god!

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 25/10/2017 22:51

But so few women are speaking out about this ttbb (or feel able to) and JK Rowling has a big following on Twitter, so some people will listen to what she says.

MrsKnightley · 25/10/2017 23:10

Was the thread about the “gender neutral” doll survey a troll? It has been zapped but no explanation.

DoubleRamsey · 25/10/2017 23:11

Ttbb do you not think she is a writer of 'great skill and merit'? If she doesn't make the cut with one of the most successful series of all time I'm not sure who does!

I am interested in what you think qualifies someone to be a 'great intellectual'

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 25/10/2017 23:19

It really annoys me when people slag off her writing. The HP books have more creative imagination in them than any other children's series that I am aware of.

Hogwarts is stuffed full of things that other writers would devote a whole novel to (mirror of ERISED, room of requirement etc etc) but she just churns them out. She's amazing.

I have a friend who hates her because she uses comma splicing - it drives me mad - I mean really? Tall poppy syndrome at its worst. She's an incredible writer.

And I'm delighted if she's stuck her head over the peak-trans parapet on all of our behalves.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 25/10/2017 23:20

Behalfs?

Confused
AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 25/10/2017 23:26

Ttbh
If you are only interested in the opinions of those people who might be a 'writer of great skill and merit' or a 'great intellectual', what the fuck are you doing slumming it on Mumsnet?

Anlaf · 26/10/2017 08:31

Twitter is this morning going wilder for

JK is a terf,
and also a centrist

I am a reformed book snob and I very much enjoyed reading her books. I am also delighted she has strong opinions on some matters. Although, as a reminder, she "liked" a tweet which linked to an piece about journo Sam Kriss, who's been accused of groping women. Thoughtcrime!

I liked this What's with all these kiddies trying to sound like Khymer Rouge or something? twitter.com/FightUnreality/status/923393528973144064

obvs didn't like it on twitter as I'd be outed as a disgusting TERF

Anlaf · 26/10/2017 08:41

I'm also not allegedly a great intellectual of our time but I happily sometimes fervently spend time on here and in real life trying to influence people's thinking.

Aren't all the great intellectuals of our time oldish whitish men, anyway? It's basically Noam Chomsky and Stephen Hawking and Noam Chomsky talks a load of shite IMHO

Hurrah for women with strong opinions, says I. Especially those with 13million twitter followers

Terfing · 26/10/2017 13:18

Like her or not, if she is gender critical, then she could be our biggest and best ally. She's one of the very few slebs that are untouchable. I can't imagine her millions of fans being too pleased if the TRA army descend on her with their death and rape threats... Rowling's army is much bigger.

I've just bought the first Cormoran Strike book off the back of Twitter & this thread.

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 26/10/2017 13:41

I might do the same Empress. I started watching the BBC adaptation but stopped after seeing the 'dead woman in opening scenes' and 'younger female sidekick to older, troubled male main character' cliches, but maybe there is more to it.

JessicaEccles · 26/10/2017 15:13

I a glad to hear that Gia Millinovich has joined us on the dark side Smile

DoubleRamsey · 26/10/2017 15:16

The third book Career of evil makes difficult reading. But touches on lots of important themes.

Much more than a trashy who done it in my opinion.

bambambini · 26/10/2017 15:53

Nothing against her and happy she’s been successful and that she might be gen crit but i read quite a few HP books with my kids and i never found them that engaging - couldn’t wait to be done with them tbh. So she might have come up with some imaginative ideas but still wouldn’t say that makes her a great writer.

IndominusRex · 26/10/2017 15:54

This might be my favourite thread ever. Another JK fan girl here. Really recommend the strike books, the series was ok but took out a lot of the subleties and more interesting characters I thought.
Also snape is the least trans person ever. This reaffirms my belief that trans is the new emo. These youngsters need to learn about the 70s and 80s. Speaking of which, Boy George is also gender critical!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 26/10/2017 16:07

I am glad to hear that Gia Millinovich has joined us on the dark side

I think she & Brian Cox have been over here for quite a while Grin

YourVagesty · 26/10/2017 16:13

.

SelmaAndJubjub · 26/10/2017 19:07

It would be awesome if JK would come out as explicitly GC as she is so influential with the under-35s who grew up on her books. That said, I imagine she is cautious about causing distress to teens with gender dysphoria, so can understand why she has only dipped a toe in the water.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 26/10/2017 19:24

She's not on their blocker list yet. Gia Millinovich is though.

Whenever I look for someone I just doublecheck that I'm still there.

badbadhusky · 26/10/2017 20:14

After last night’s discussion, I thought other posters would appreciate this gem from Twitter.

Pa ha ha ha! Love it.

Ttbb · 26/10/2017 20:28

@DoubleRamsey @assignedperf when was the last time you read her books? Her imagination is stunning but her writing style is lacking. let's not forget that that twighloght and 50 shades have also been extremely successful. Mumsnet is interesting in that it is a discussion board as opposed x celebrity said blah blah blah. I just don't see how anyone would be swayed by her opinion of anything except children's writing (which she is very good at in some respects).
