I once bought some manga books in Japan for a young relative. It was somewhat challenging to find any that did not feature wanky penises or giant tits on a snake, or similar.

Well I was foolish enough to google hentai and it was a very different listing to what I am used to. I fair clutched my pearls (and, no, that is not a euphemism). Thank God for wikipedia. And those manga hermaphrodites with tits and todgers are most odd, the weirdest bit being the cartoony faces. There are some seriously odd folk about if that’s what floats their boats.

That reddit link is very interesting Quentin - funnily enough I was going to come back to this thread to comment that there's a lot of trans stuff on, say, Archive of Our Own (and some fandoms seem to attract more than others - there's a lot of trans stuff on the Hobbit fandom, weirdly enough).

It's fascinating to read young adults (often those somewhere on the AS) reflecting on their teen years in fandom. They pick up (as first person accounts) a lot of stuff I'd kind of armchair-psychologised about as a reader: the fear of real sex, the idealised sex, the unacknowledged lesbianism diverted into something else (imagining themselves as teen boys in relationships with girls). And what they describe as the "heteronormativity" of a lot of slash (male/male pairings) which in fact is a faux-homosexualized (can't think of a better description - bears no relation to any gay relationship I've ever seen my friends in) version not of a healthy heterosexual relationship, but rather a homosexual parody of the most regressive elements of Mills and Boon - the "femme" partner as swooningly submissive, the "dom" character as mad, bad and dangerous to know.

Just stumbled across the term “fap off” (wanking) on that hentai reddit, which has really tickled me for some reason. So glad DH has gone out for milk, cause I’m lolling like a wrong ‘un. It’s an interesting read alright.
