Victoria reinforces sexist ideas to undermine female athletes

and this is no different from asymmetric bars.
OP posts:

Any sports clothes which require the removal of pubic hair are too "abbreviated" in my opinion.

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/10/2017 19:10

Calling it "stupid ribbon routine" and pretty/twirly as a negative doesn't help with your assertion that you weren't being sexist about it.

Pole dancing as shown in the OPs video is massively more sexualised than artistic gymnastics floor routines. It's absurd to suggest anything else. Whether pole dancing is also sexist is a separate question. I think it's history and continuing use in strip clubs is problematic and that connection is apparent from the OPs video.

I have no problem with circus type pole dancing.

I agree that the Olympics needs thinning down, rather than expanding. There's very little logic to sports that get included or excluded apart from history and money. I would be sad to see team synchronised swimming, floor and rhythmic gymnastics out of the Olympics but they probably should be.

I am happy that pole dancing is available to adults who want to do it. I think it should never be in the Olympics.

QuentinSummers · 22/10/2017 19:13

Girls IME percieve themselves as not strong/good enough to "do that sort of thing" but then replace it with something they internally percieve as acceptable, so replace street gym with pole dancing
Yes totally agree with this. Which is why I love gymnastics. The women totally knock the men in a cocked hat imo and get to show off amazing strength and flexibility.
Btw lana stop sneering about the women's floor. Google Simone Biles/Claudia Fragapani and watch their floor routines. No titillation involved.

However I do also agree about the history of pole dancing making it unsuitable. It also now seems in a comparable category body building - which is also not an Olympic sport either and not should it be.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 22/10/2017 19:13

So like all the Cirque de Soliel type stuff.

Art?
Theatre?
Sport?
Gymnastics?
An amazing demonstration of the ability of the human body?
Or just attractive women gyrating in skimpy outfits??

BertrandRussell · 22/10/2017 19:15

Lana- I honestly think that there isn't as much "street gym" about as you think there is!

And of course people will remember the connections with the sex industry when they see a beautiful, scantily clad woman with loose hair and make up dancing on a pole. However glorious, athletic, strong and powerful she is.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/10/2017 19:24

Speak for yourself because you are certainly not speaking for me on this.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 22/10/2017 19:25

Lana- I honestly think that there isn't as much "street gym" about as you think there is!

But I have been at the classes!
I have seen her "routines" from start to finish.
No "sexy" clothes, not one hair flick, no "dance" moves.
Just lots of strength and stamina!

Maybe the one my bro's g/f goes to is the exception, but it was about as traditionally "sexy" as weightlifting!!

Literally identical in almost everyway to street gym except for being indoors, and being done by women.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 22/10/2017 19:27

Nope.

My only thoughts were "fucking hell, how do you do that"??

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/10/2017 19:29

So like all the Cirque de Soliel type stuff.

Art? Tick
Theatre? tick
Sport? don't know/ don't care
Gymnastics? tick
An amazing demonstration of the ability of the human body? tick
Or just attractive women gyrating in skimpy outfits?? depends on the context. The circus ones no- that is not the audience they are aiming for. The woman in the video in the opening post? I'm not keen on that.

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/10/2017 19:50

I really don't know what street gym is. Parcour yes, that I see around town occasionally, but I have never seen men doing acrobatics on poles.

Are there really loads of young women who are desperate to do street gym but feel that pole dancing is the only available option? The only women I know who pole dance are older mums who are doing it for fitness and to tantalize their partners.

sisterbrute · 22/10/2017 20:12

If my 5 year old arrives home from school with a flyer for the local judo/football/gymnastics club, then great, but if she or he arrives home with a flyer for pole-dancing, then I'm going to have a massive problem with that, especially if my child is a girl. I can't think of a better indication that it's not suitable for the Olympics.

Childrenofthestones · 22/10/2017 20:26

"Up next, the international twerking finals" Smile

BertrandRussell · 22/10/2017 20:43

Ok.
Would everyone be happy for a primary school to run pole classes for 6 year olds? If not, why not?

QuentinSummers · 22/10/2017 20:46

No. They can do gym instead Grin

derxa · 22/10/2017 20:50

Would everyone be happy for a primary school to run pole classes for 6 year olds? If not, why not? Health and Safety

sisterbrute · 22/10/2017 20:52

Honestly, just health and safety??

derxa · 22/10/2017 20:54

Yes it's logistically impossible.

BertrandRussell · 22/10/2017 20:55

Grin health and safety? Really?

OK-14 year olds at secondary school then. With mats. And a safety harness like the ones my dd used when she did trapeze.

sisterbrute · 22/10/2017 20:57

You can't deny the links to the sex industry when you're discussing having children do this 'sport' I don't think. If it's not ok for 5 year olds to try, then it's not ok as an Olympic sport.

scrabbler3 · 22/10/2017 21:01

The men who watch beach volleyball for the "athleticism" will be watching this too I'm sure 😂

derxa · 22/10/2017 21:04

5 year olds are not physically able to do it. They are just starting gymnastics.

sisterbrute · 22/10/2017 21:10

Is there another sport that 5 year olds are maybe not physically able to do, but it's also not appropriate for them to do? I can see that they can't singly handed guide a yacht, but it's not icky if they were to do it?

derxa · 22/10/2017 21:17

but it's not icky if they were to do it? But pole gymnastics isn't icky is it? It's all about strength and physical skills.
