I've scrolled back a few pages and I can't even find the last pub thread.

So I've taken the beer towels off the pumps, tapped a new barrel, polished the glasses, fed the goat and applied brasso to the patriarchy busting canon.

Come and join me - all tastes catered for - beer, gin, wine, cocktails, coffee and a nice cup of tea.

Thank you eyebrows for the kind compliments, it's lovely of you to say that! I want to go into law as it happens and eventually become a QC then possibly judge (though that would be quite some way off). I find the likes of Baroness Hale and Alison Saunders rather inspiring. It'd be great if I could work to help women and girls in some way, be that through a career of volunteering in future as well as I feel so much rage at male violence, rape culture etc it would be something if I could channel that positively rather than letting it take over my mind too much as I probably do now. I have a couple of friends who would like to go into the field you're in!

BigDeskBob · 19/10/2017 08:48

Hi, I've never dared (far too strong a word, but its early, and I've been up most of the night) add to these threads before, but I'm jumping in.

Re: changes to the jury system. South Africa doesn't have juries as we do because they recognise that racism would prejudice trials. I feel that rape myths are so prevalent in this country, it could be argued that something similar should be in place here.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense I'm so so tired.[tired face]

BigDeskBob · 19/10/2017 08:50

God, I'm a slow typer that took me 20 mins to write

NoLoveofMine · 19/10/2017 08:52

I agree BigDeskBob. It also shows again why it's so important to challenge rape myths because they're having such a widespread and damaging effect on so many.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 19/10/2017 08:57

What worries me is that some judges seem just as bad. So how does it work in SA...i will google Grin

nolove if im ever before you in court...somerville did it

NoLoveofMine · 19/10/2017 09:05

I shall bear that in mind but also remember your trying to ensure I only get served coke in here Rufus Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 19/10/2017 09:13

I've put this on a couple of other relevant threads, but a pub seems like a good place to leave some newspaper cuttings - Times, Jo Johnson wants to stop 'no platforming' in unis.

Here's the shareable link to the full piece:

<a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=www.thetimes.co.uk/article/universities-ordered-to-guarantee-free-speech-wxzcr32hh?shareToken=2e12b14c846e9999dc280838fb947049" target="_blank">https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/universities-ordered-to-guarantee-free-speech-wxzcr32hh?shareToken=2e12b14c846e9999dc280838fb947049

And comment on it:

Re: changes to the jury system. South Africa doesn't have juries as we do because they recognise that racism would prejudice trials. I feel that rape myths are so prevalent in this country, it could be argued that something similar should be in place here.

Yes. I agree this should be explored.

FlaviaAlbia · 19/10/2017 09:27

In rape trials I think it would be worth exploring, except you do get the odd judge who makes appalling comments or judgements that hit the papers and make you boggle.

There's an interesting but old article about Diplock courts here www.independent.co.uk/money/spend-save/diplock-courts-a-model-for-british-justice-1600830.html which seems to have barristers supporting that idea.

Is it too early to drink myself under the table?

Somerville · 19/10/2017 10:53

What's up, Bert?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 19/10/2017 12:53

somerville

Sorry to speak for bert but we are both on a thread where the nicest thing i can say is that they are being deliberately obtuse

It was the one i was pissed off with yesterday

Dammit...what happened to upholding the law...fine judge you'll make Grin

You cant be 17 too much longer surely...you've been 17 for ages

Somerville · 19/10/2017 13:00

Ah. Well good on you both. I've avoided that thread because I just can't deal with it on all fronts right now.

SerendipityFelix · 19/10/2017 13:12

I can never work out what ‘other threads’ people are bemoaning in the pub.

I’m off again this afternoon. I have decided to spend a few hours feministing and do some reading and email writing.

BeyondNoone · 19/10/2017 13:20

Quentin, that's crap. Wine I know the shock, I've had it recently. That you're used to the low level stuff, but when something bigger happens you're just left like Shock "Wtaf?!"

Re books I have a new toy - a new kindle (I had a kobo but never use it as I prefer real books). I'm currently reading all of the Philippa Gregory books in order Grin couldn't sleep last night so the first one is finished already!

My mum just rang. I don't think it's worth a thread, but want to tell someone. She's had two abnormal smears in a row so has a coloscopy and possible biopsy next week. She's insisted that she feels fine and so is fine, but then in conversation mentioned that she was so tired that she hadn't washed the dishes all week. Which is a big deal for my ridiculously houseproud mother, so now I'm quietly panicking :(

BeyondNoone · 19/10/2017 13:22

Serendipity, I'm gonna guess it's the one in aibu with a wankstain PBP on it (not caught up since yesterday yet though - has he not been re-banned yet?)

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/10/2017 14:03

All the best to your Mum beyond. Flowers

NoLoveofMine · 19/10/2017 14:03

Until just after mid March, Rufus.

I'm trying to avoid threads in other sections of the board now as sometimes they can get quite exhausting with some of the excusing of misogyny, victim blaming and belittling of concerns of sexism which can go on but am grateful for the fantastic feminists who post on them. I've found them very reassuring and supportive when I have and I'm sure others are also heartened by the support, as well as people who just read being glad of such voices.

NoLoveofMine · 19/10/2017 14:04

I hope your mum will be alright Beyond Flowers

LauraMipsum · 19/10/2017 17:08

Is it too early for gin?

It'll have to be a fantasy gin, because I'm about to collect DD from nursery, but an ice cold posh gin with not too much tonic and a slice of lime is exactly what I need right now.
