Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Have I been reading these boards too long?!

I've always been a feminist, but since discovering Mumsnet I've learnt so much, every day is a new education. But now I'm seeing male privilege everywhere, even in really innocent things!

Today I was listening to the radio, it was Phil Collins singing Against All Odds. And suddenly I thought hang on, why does she 'need' to listen to what you want to say? Maybe she's had enough of you droning on about what YOU want all the time? And "turn around and see my face" ? Er, no love just keep walking.

Then I picked up a book (don't remember the title) and the blurb on the back was something like "Bob has got Millicent locked up in a cell... but Millicent has a secret of her own. Why is she really there?" and I immediately thought well that's just victim blaming!

Not sure whether I'm imagining it... or just noticing for the first time. But it's taken years to see these things, I guess for men or anyone who isn't interested they would never even realise .

Sorry, I'm babbling. Confused

Indeed, indeed fairnuff - but things have moved on - grinding there, slowly - in fact I know some one who used to edit BB (in the Channel 4 days) and he was advised to basically make people look like twats. And it was through my relentless feminist banging on, that he made the snap rebellious decision at work one day to let an older feminist have a full speech about her beliefs without chopping it up or making her look bad. Bless 'im.

The fact that CBB covered topics like internalised misogyny is progress - Rachel Johnson said Ann Widdicombe is a misogynist - a few years ago the word 'misogyny' wouldn't have been allowed in a light entertainment show!

You can't win em all - but we are winning some...

Yeah, I saw a trailer today for that new film with Colin Firth where he plays the bloke who left his wife and four kids to try and sail around the world. It was all stirring music and windswept speeches about him having a big dream and being brave etc. And I just thought "you selfish prick".

Italiangreyhound · 10/02/2018 23:36

Hey wimmin or whatever the correct term, I've not been drinking but I love you all, I really do. You often say what I am thinking and other times I start thinking what you are saying.

I love that there is hope.

@claritytobeclear "I think you have to remember everyone is the victim of misogynistic patriarchy. It's core values are a widespread delusion. People can perpetuate the misogynistic values in complete ignorance. No point hating people for blind ignorance, they just need to be educated." So very true.

WTF is 'Hotline Bling'?

thebewilderness · 11/02/2018 07:29

You are seeing it everywhere because it is everywhere. Suddenly it is no longer background noise. It is the male dominance framework that we live in.

Me too Gacapa. I also thought “typical willy waving project” and rolled my eyes so hard it hurt.

DH and I watched the first episode and a half of ‘Altered Carbon’, Netflix’s new super-expensive futuristic series. I told DH I was fed up of watching futuristic shows which are so male-centric, where women are still always portrayed as sex workers and strippers like nude, objectified wallpaper in the background. We debated the make nudity in this series, but DH conceded the men were leading the action in those scenes, not passive, objectified scenery. We both agreed it was depressing, sexist shit and that we’d call time on it. There’s far too much of this shit out there.

davidbyrneswhitesuit · 11/02/2018 08:12

Yes yes to that issue in Altered Carbon, @boatyardblues! I actually think it makes it look very dated compared with a lot of the new output - DH and I really noticed it. It's always the random lapdancing bar visit, isn't it?! FFS.

And while it does have some big feisty roles for women, I'm not sure it's passed the Bechtel test even now I'm two episodes off the end... they're still basically feisty fighting love interests.

davidbyrneswhitesuit · 11/02/2018 08:21

Bechdel - sorry, autocorrected. Not sure what construction giant Bechtel's feminist film test would look like Grin

I am feeling the rage. My friend said its "just" because my XOH was a complete bastard and NAMALT. But its not. I'm nearly 59 years old and I want to protest about self identification and lack of safe space for women and lack of resources for women's aid and bloody Tesco. I want to express anger when a man calls me a good girl and puts his hand on my back to steer me in the right direction.

Apologies - I can't remember who posted it - but once you see it, you can't unsee. Not sure what I do now. Can't see anyone to vote for. Am I too old to carry a placard?

Italiangreyhound · 11/02/2018 14:13

Surely a magazine aimed, at least partially, at under age girls, and promoting sex is a form of grooming! Who can we report this shit to?
