Oh, I agree its a pants advert. And so long. I think it would be carved up and shown in segments for TV. (Unless adverts in the us are really this long)I can't imagine they would use the the MTT bit because its hardly going to appeal to a large audience.

Countess - "all felt a bit Handmaid's Tale to me"
Perhaps it's a subliminal advert for the series?

Ways to be a mom:

  1. Be female and carry a baby which you wish to raise
  2. Be female and adopt a child
  3. Potentially be female and carry a child you do not wish to raise, whether aborting or adopting. Some may disagree with this one.

The end.

Ways not to be a mom

  1. Be male.

It's a shit advert, much like the other shit adverts they do.

It isn't offensive in any way though.

It's a tiny part of a crappy advert.

Exactly that @TheCountessofFitzdotterel!

I wish there had been a bit of my experience of being a 'real mom' in amongst the breakdancing and rockclimbing.....sat on a doughnut cushion, eating a giant bag of bacon fries, rocking dd1 in a bouncer with my foot while watching Hill St Blues

I dont think its that bad at all! Just trying to get across the point that all mums may be different and do things slightly differently. I suppose its just trying to make people feel good about themselves. I generally hate dove adverts because of how they present themselves as altruistic when they are really just trying to sell product.
The transwoman is a non issue in my book tho. I cant really see why you would be offended by that when she is in only a very small segment of the advert.

So he's #realdad enough to be a biological parent, but can be equally #realmom. Right.

Beyond - you can be a mum by being a lesbian parent too. You just can't be a mum if you're a man

Report

Would have been more progressive to have a lesbian couple I think, and have them both talk about being a mum. 'realmum' is irritating, I can't imagine anyone calls themselves that. You are either a mother or you aren't, and there is nothing wrong with being a father or a parent if you want a non gendered name. I think parenting isn't a particularly gendered activity beyond pregnancy and breastfeeding (neither of which a transwoman can do). The individual featured in that advert was parenting in my mind.

Of course jiggly, I was somewhat clumsily including that in female who adopts. It didn't occur to me that it isn't strictly accurate and I hope I haven't offended anyone Blush

That "trans mom" will be parenting with male privilege
whatever she does will be celebrated for being "hands on" and "involved"
Whatever her female coparent does will never quite live up to societies ever moving expectations of female mothers..she'll always fall short
Her female co-parent will repeatedly be told how "lucky" she is that the other parent is involved
The "trans mom" will never be told to be grateful that the biological mother is doing her share of the parenting - that'll just be expected

Why couldn't they have a lesbian couple? Why do they have some weird bloke in a wig who's clearly impregnated his wife with his penis, in what way is he a woman or a mom for fuck's sake?

What an annoyingly twee advert.

Well done, you've had babies. Would you care for a medal?

TinselTwins · 14/04/2017 23:12

"real mom" = as puke worthy as "real woman"
it's loaded, as per the examples of "real moms" they chose. None were as ordinary as most mothers, "real" = out there and rock climbing and shit, not sitting around in costa talking catchment areas before going home to do some mumsnetting after bed routine!

Yeah I'm usually pro-Spartacus on these sort of threads, but on this I don't really see the issue.

The ad doesn't focus on or prioritise trans over biologically female mothers. It's just in the mix. Which unless you are massively anti-trans on principle which would make you bigoted as fuck is pretty uncontroversial.

Some people are trans. Some of those people have kids. This is not news or outrage-worthy.

"this real mom with her new baby, uses dove soap once a week when she has chance to have a shower and change from one dirty pair of pjs to a clean pair. She uses copious amounts of dove deoderant to attempt to mask the smell of both her own sweat and baby sick. Sometimes, but rarely enough that a bottle lasts an entire year, her DH will 'babysit' the baby and she will have a dove bubble bath and put on some dove moisturiser, whilst he is showered with praise for looking after his own child"

I wouldn't be so bothered if it was interpretted as we are real moms together, rather than "I am a real mom" and the one who did the hard work is silent and in the background

Hey Toffee, women can be trans too, would you care to join me in looking for all the transmen Dove are using in their for men range campaigns?

I'm confused!

Are they actors or real people? Confused
