I might be alone in this, I hope not, but is anyone else disappointed by the slut shaming and vitriol aimed towards her?

Her husband is a disgusting reptile, that's a given. But in the last day or two I have seen her called a tramp, gold digger, whore, slag, dirty, and trash.

Today a 'feminist' page on FB - this one if you're interested www.facebook.com/feministnews.us/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE
published a meme about her basically laughing at how thick she supposedly is. What was particularly horrible were the comments underneath from women, all who you would assume to be feminists as they follow the page. Vile comments including 'I hope they wiped down the chair she sat on in the white house' and 'when do they install the stripper pole'.

I understand that feminism doesn't mean that all women are above reproach but really? We have a man in the White House who hates women, direct your hatred at him!

And tbh as she's married to DT I suspect her life isn't a picnic, he is a nasty bully.

Is it possible she loves him? He seems like a carbon copy of her father.
She's probably the stronger one in the marriage. He might rely on her. Who knows the dynamics.

tribpot · 13/11/2016 18:49

She's said she wants to be a 'traditional' First Lady like Betty Ford (drunk?) and Jackie Kennedy (aristo who had ice cream flown in from Italy). I actually have a lot of time for Betty Ford, Melania could do a lot worse than emulating her. She certainly doesn't sound very traditional, being open about her mastectomy and addictions and being a pro-choice feminist.

How involved she has to be in official duties is an interesting question, given it's not a paid position.

Imsickofnamechanging · 13/11/2016 18:55

I think it's actually quite arrogant to say you feel sorry for someone you know nothing about.

BoredOfBrexit · 13/11/2016 19:04

I'm sick: yes, it's a simpering PA effort to diminish her as a person.

user1475253854 · 13/11/2016 19:08

I had no idea she was 47!

Hawaiiisalongwayaway · 13/11/2016 21:39

Me neither user I honestly assumed she was in her mid twenties and wondered who the boy belonged too Blush.

Bue · 14/11/2016 00:29

Well she has terrible taste in billionaires and no political instinct (both speeches Shock) but she certainly doesn't deserve abuse. I don't criticise women for staying with adulterous husbands (that would make me chief hypocrite as I am a huge HRC fan) and she did after all criticise her husband's remarks as much as she could realistically do. I mean what was the woman supposed to do, come out all guns blazing against her husband who was running for president at the time? Confused

I probably shouldn't feel sorry for her - in her interview with Anderson Cooper she said she's tough and people don't need to feel sorry for her. But I still do. I get the impression that she didn't sign up for this and doesn't want it (I actually don't think he wants the job either!) She seems like quite a private, low key person and now she's been flung into the goldfish bowl.

Pizanfan · 14/11/2016 05:11

Pity? Pity Melania Trump?

The super model, rich and succesfull, Slovenian beauty queen who married a billionaire.

Poor girl, clearly she is a metal bikini wearing victim handcuffed to Jabba the Trump's chair...

Come on lets be serious, unless you have intimate knowledge of her and Trumps relationship, or some evidence of anything other than a loving marraige why even question it? Is it just because people are just so hysterically upset?

I can't stand the way she's being treated right no, by the mainstream media, and by feminist organisations. It's such a shame we can't just show some humanity.

YonicProbe · 14/11/2016 06:49

Which feminist organisations did you have in mind, Pizan?

TheDowagerCuntess · 14/11/2016 07:00

You start your post by suggesting it's ludicrous to feel pity for her, and the end it by saying its a shame we can't show some humanity. Confused

I do pity her. She's married to Donald Trump, and she has to follow in Michelle Obama's footsteps. Two giant millstones.

Miffer · 14/11/2016 07:21

I honestly have no opinion on her, I have tried to conjure one reading this. I haven't seen her attacked by anybody, so it really hasn't come up. When she allegedly plagurised that speech the criticism I saw was directed at her husband. All that said I have no doubt at all she is being ripped apart in some quarters and I don't think I care.

I'll have to mull it over some more.

Xenophile · 14/11/2016 08:15

So lovely to see Pizan being their usual helpful coherent self Hmm

Elendon · 14/11/2016 08:41

I hope she surprises us all by taking up the legacy that Michelle Obama left and being somewhat of a foil to her husband's more inflammatory policies. I have a sneaky suspicion that she will do this. I don't think she is stupid or thick. (And I would love if she and Barron continued working in the vegetable garden).

tribpot · 14/11/2016 11:36

I think her team will certainly want to emulate the MO model of sticking to very apolitical topics (promoting exercise and healthy eating, support for military families, championing American fashion designers).

Pizanfan · 14/11/2016 11:40

Yes Xeno, evidence is incoherent isn't it?

Yonic

The OP mentions a prominant feminist FB group, that'll do for a start. Prominant feminist celebs, feminist identified journalists for the NYT, and Huff...

I'm not sure if poeple know, but Mrs Trump is actually a feminist, and has contributed to plenty of women and feminist events.

Elendon · 14/11/2016 13:09

It was Clinton and Bush as FLOTUS who promoted organic eating in the White House.

So what is the opposite of First Lady? I mean this is SO important?

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 14/11/2016 13:12

Barron's such a good name for a cat.
I'm sure the original Barron Trump is lovely too, no offence meant.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/11/2016 13:13

My preference for all non elected spouses would be that they either keep out of influencing policy or stand on their own platforms and be properly held to account.

Elendon · 14/11/2016 14:04

Properly held to account on what exactly Lass?

Bobochic · 14/11/2016 14:13

She's a sometime glamour model married to an oaf of extraordinary proportions. Not exactly a role model...

Lottapianos · 14/11/2016 14:25

Just found this thread. A friend of mine on the dreaded FB posted last week to share her horror at Trump's election - all good. She decided to finish the post by suggesting that Melania used to be a porn star, and by linking to Melania's nude photos, instead of say any of the nine million articles about Trump himself. I called her out on it, she didn't get it. At all. This person has form for 'slut-shaming' so I wasn't entirely surprised but I was really disappointed.

Melania was not the candidate, Melania is not the President-Elect. I really think she should be left out of it. I doubt very much that her day-to-day life is pleasant.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/11/2016 21:13

Properly held to account on what exactly Lass?

The electorate by being voted in or voted out as the case may be.

roseship · 15/11/2016 14:31

OP is correct:

Mrsglitterpants · 15/11/2016 15:04

That placard held up in Kimberley Corban's photo you linked to roseship is fucking horrific.

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 15/11/2016 16:04

That's repulsive.
