Oxford schoolgirl abduction didn't happen, police suddenly announced

Help, fellow feminists...

I've written a bit on other threads about my daughter (same age) being hugely upset about this abduction and rape. She was cycling along the same street at the same time as it was meant to have happened. As a direct result I've had to go back to giving her lifts to and from school.

This is a name change because it was all just getting a bit close to home/potentially outing.

I've had texts from her already this afternoon... news of this press release must have broken at school. She's confused. The girl was raped but not abducted? Why did she say she was abducted? Is she in trouble? Have the police made a mistake?
And then just now:
Now the police won't believe the next girl who is abducted. Is that right?

And this is before she's seen any of the vitriol that has already begun on social media... schoolgirls should never be believed, apparently; it wasn't rape either, more than likely, she just changed her mind after a threesome. Envy - vomit.

Anyone got any words of wisdom? I have to pick her up shortly and I have no idea what to say. I'm really shaken by this. Though also, of course, kind of glad that the abduction didn't take place and that my daughter might start to feel safe to travel alone again.

Frustratingly the press release on TVP's website is now showing as having an orator and not loading. (It was working an hour ago.) Like more confusion is needed here. Hmm

Nothing like pointing out an unfortunate typo to strengthen your case.........

IAmAmy · 11/11/2016 17:53

They are still looking into it because they haven't arrested any suspects yet. What do you want them to confirm? She's been examined and there's evidence of a rape, now they need to find the attackers.

WomanWithAltitude · 11/11/2016 17:54

Whether she was abducted or not, it still sounds like she was raped. My sympathies are with her, and I hope she is well supported.

Pickled0nions · 11/11/2016 17:54

I didn't understand what it meant but now I realised. I was genuinely asking. But now I see how nasty this is turning.

IAmAmy · 11/11/2016 17:54

It's not about having an opinion. Your "opinion" goes against facts. You can't have an "opinion" that a rape didn't take place when there's medical evidence it did.

Pickled0nions · 11/11/2016 17:55

It doesn't say they are looking into suspects though. That's why I am confused.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 11/11/2016 17:55

Why does it say they are still looking into rape allegations.

Probably because they're still looking into it.

They've already confirmed the abduction didn't take place. They've never said the rape didn't take place.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2016 17:55

From the police statement-

"Thames Valley Police continue to investigate an offence of rape against the victim"

IAmAmy · 11/11/2016 17:55

The only nastiness is suggesting a 14 year old girl didn't suffer the awful ordeal the medical evidence shows she did.

Pickled0nions · 11/11/2016 17:56

I don't know why you are all trying to make it seem like I am building some sort of ''case'' or that I am trying to imply she was never raped.

I said that it's possible the story is made up, I never read anything in the news about the fact that they are looking at suspects or that there was evidence that rape took place.

I obviously misunderstood. But honestly cannot believe how hostile you all have been.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2016 17:57

Not "allegations of an offence" . An "offense".

Pickled0nions · 11/11/2016 17:57

Yeah I get it, thanks.

WomanWithAltitude · 11/11/2016 17:57

She must have said what she did because she was scared she'd get into trouble. Scared she'd be blamed. Scared that people wouldn't believe her.

And, horribly, she was right. Sad

I hope she knows there are people who believe and support her. She's not the first victim to have done this due to fear and self-blame, and she won't be the last.

Gardencentregroupie · 11/11/2016 17:57

To be fair it is actually possible that a medical exam.has confirmed that sexual intercourse took place, but there may well be circumstances whereby that intercourse did not amount to rape. Yes despite her age, there are legal defences to rape if you have sex with a 14 year old. The medical exam may even have been inconclusive, sexual intercourse may not be ruled in or out. We don't know, but PickledOnions is getting an unnecessarily harsh time here I think.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2016 17:58

Feel free to point out the typo in that post too.

Gardencentregroupie · 11/11/2016 17:58

Or am I missing something, and details of the medical exam have been made public?

Pickled0nions · 11/11/2016 17:58

Why don't you go and bully someone else BertandRussell

Yunitsa · 11/11/2016 17:59

What has happened on this thread mirrors what is happening, city-wide, around me.

Many people reading the press reports are saying she probably wasn't raped either.

Whereas the police statement makes it clear that they have ruled out abduction on the basis of eveidence but continue to investigate rape. This leads me to think that there is evidence for the rape.

venusinscorpio · 11/11/2016 18:01

Pickled Onions, you said the police had stated they weren't sure if the allegations were true and that it was possible it was all made up. They are investigating a rape. They are never going to be "sure" the allegation is true. That is the same in any rape case, actually, any crime. Because obviously it has to go to court. I highly doubt that the police worded it like you did. What you posted was misleading.

IAmAmy · 11/11/2016 18:01

It's so upsetting to hear of how many adults are so quick and eager to attack a young girl who went through something horrific. So sad. I hope she has a loving family and lots of support around her given how people in her city are talking about her.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 11/11/2016 18:01

If she went with them willingly and was then raped by them then it makes sense she would say she was abducted. If she said she went with them willingly then there would be people blaming her and asking what she expected to happen, etc. Because you know obviously going somewhere with a man /men is automatically consenting to them sticking their penis in you...

I'm not condemning lying about being abducted. I'm saying that I understand why someone would do that.

Pickled0nions · 11/11/2016 18:01

I actually think the press articles are vague. I read it and didn't really understand it, which is probably why people are getting confused about it.
Which is what OP was saying firstly!!

WomanWithAltitude · 11/11/2016 18:01

The police are still investigating rape. Therefore the police are operating on the basis that it happened. Given that they've seen the medical report, that's good enough for me.

Yunitsa · 11/11/2016 18:02

You can't believe how hostile we are being?

You made a mistake - which you acknowledge - and didn't read the police statement.

People taking their information from newspapers is half the problem in cases like this.

I posted what was written on BBC News, actually.
