A consultation is currently happening in Scotland to make charges to the laws around prostitution, brothel keeping and pimping. No matter what you think - it would be good to have your voice, experiences and opinions heard in this. They have just extended the deadline to the 8th December so if time has been an issue for you - you now have another week!

Ubik - it would be legal to have smaller brothels with up to 4 people selling sex at a given time. Those 4 people can change so you could have a number of Shifts in a day. " They don't have to apply for a license and I the new Zealand model is replicated - they aren't registered either. There are no grounds to oppose them.
This has been an issue in new Zealand in communities and some municipalities are challenging this.

The problem is not those selling sex in these circumstances but more the punters causing problems but there is no legal restrictions on them.

Emmawinkl- the last i read, the women selling sex were taken in for questioning but have not been charged. Do you have a link to something showing they were charged??

" but more the punters causing problems "

Care to expand on what problems you think punters create?

Um

Scotland is a bit more than a wasteland but putting your ignorance aside, I was talking about increased sex traffic from the republic.
People travel over from NI daily for work, to study and for recreation. Scotland and NI are very close.
I was pondering whether the NI legislation will lead to a rise in sex tourism especially if Holyrood went for the option outlined in the paper.

Hmm I cannot see them allowing brothers eithout a licensing system. Scotland loves licensing stuff

You're right. Let's keep raiding brothels and arresting the women who work there and confiscating whatever cash and phones they have on them. JQ's proposal isn't valid because she only consults pimps and traffickers. And anyone who supports JQ must also consult with pimps and traffickers. Or the "pimp lobby" as I keep reading on here.

rolls eyes

UBK - There would also be larger licensed brothels.

Emma - where are women being arrested in Scotland? Links please.

Problems from punters - I was referring to new Zealand in that point and problems were nuisance behaviour, approaching women not in prostitution and large numbers coming and going over 24 hrs.

I am responding to your points. You gonna respond to mine?

So you are saying JQ's proposals aren't necessary?

I don't see how you can say that Jean hasn't spoken with exited sex workers and those who work with them etc, when this consultation is clearly open to all. Confused

Who makes it unsafe emmawinkl?"

emmawinkle: "People who lobby for unsafe laws"

No - men who buy sex make it unsafe.

Report
weeonion · 05/12/2015 21:32

Hirples - I said she hadn't consulted with them in developing these proposals. Of course the consultation process is open to all but lets face it, many of the women in prostitution in scotland aren't the keyboard warriors with their own blogs and twitter accounts who are leading this campaign.

"No - men who buy sex make it unsafe."

Disagree. People who lobby for laws which criminalise prostitutes/sexworkers for working together or laws which result in sexworkers being evicted or laws which encourage raids.

In other words, people who lobby for the swedish model.

Emmawinkl - I believe changes need to happen but I don't see her proposals as the way ahead.

Now - you gonna share those links / evidence to your assertions upthread?

emmawinkl people travel for sex all the time, Thailand, Cambodia et al.

Again you are not looking at the root cause of this oppression but rather a manifestation.

What's to stop women in prostitution signing up for a blog or twitter?

Just checking in to let everyone know that I've responded to the consultation.

Apparently we have to do that now.

Report
HirplesWithHaggis · 05/12/2015 21:46

No-one is "leading this campaign" atm, there is no campaign. It's a consultation and input from "keyboard warriors" who are sexworkers is as welcome as that from "keyboard warriors" whose knowledge of prostitution is entirely theoretical.

Report
emmawinkI3 · 05/12/2015 21:47

Well which "keyboard warriors" should we listen to? Those with experience selling sex, or those without experience selling sex.

Actually that was badly put, we should listen to everyone. But shouldn't we place more weight on the opinions of those who actually have experience selling sex since they will know best about how the law will affect them?

Bollocks. Prostitution of any kind in any place is inherently risky because of the nature of many of the men who use prostitutes. You may, or may not, make prostitution safer by tweaking the laws (that's up for debate) but the main danger remains the men who use prostitutes. Clients = danger. No clients = no danger.

yep, rule #1 of feminism always appears to be:

men= bad
women= victims of men

no matter what you are discussing with a feminist, it always comes down to that.

Report
emmawinkI3 · 05/12/2015 21:56

The day there are no clients, will be the day there are no humans left on earth.

Or penguins for that matter, penguins have been observed using rocks (they use to build nests) as currency (they are sometimes scarce) to buy sex. (don't believe me Google it)

Maybe we should also enforce some sort of law on penguins to stop female penguins being exploited like this by bad male penguins?

So yeah once there are no humans or penguins left on earth, that will be the day prostitution stops. No matter what law we implement, prostitution will continue until that day.

TheXxed · 05/12/2015 21:57

Last time I checked it wasn't feminist murdering prostitutes.

Report
HirplesWithHaggis · 05/12/2015 21:57

You could equally well argue that all heterosexual relationships are inherently risky because of the nature of many of the men who engage in them. Two women a week are murdered by their partners/recent exes, after all. Should we outlaw them too? No dps/dhs, no danger.

weeonion · 05/12/2015 21:58

Emmawinkl - you said pimp lobby as you keep reading here. Is that referring to this thread or MN in general? I haven't seen anyone saying those words on this thread -"if so - could you link please?

I said the NSWP (aglobal organisation based in edinburgh) had a trafficker on their board of directors. she was convicted earlier this year with evidence from women she trafficked. Are you saying that is not true?
