Not all Romans

AskBasil · 20/08/2015 08:20

The Romans built the first roads in Britain.

But not all Romans

The Vikings built ships which sailed as far as America.

Not all Vikings.

Rabbits are known for reproducing really quickly.

Not all Rabbits.

Etc. etc. I think I will add "not all" whenever anyone refers to anything ever, until people stop saying Not All Men as a first response to a class analysis of men's behaviour.

Not sure I see this pro male postgrad gap you are talking about. In fact, quite the reverse.

liptolinford · 20/08/2015 15:58

This thread is the best. Grin @ "Some Vikings build some ships, some of which sailed as far as some parts of America."

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/08/2015 16:02

larry, I assume you are picking up on a parenthetical and qualified point I made, and ignoring your major errors and mistakes?

I mentioned - brackets included '(or even postgrad work, in some areas)' being male-dominated.

You have given me total figures, which - funnily enough - apply to the total population. Not 'some areas'.

Do you want to carry on with this, or should I go do some proper work while you take another half hour combing through my data to find something you think you can nit-pick about?

larrygrylls · 20/08/2015 16:05

Jeanne,

Let's leave it. You are basically saying that, where you admit that on a population level, women are doing far better, whereas in some areas (which you are assuming are 'more important') men still do better.

We can all cherry pick self serving statistics. I suggest you go do some 'proper' work. Must admit that, were it not the holidays, I would definitely not have time to waste on here.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/08/2015 16:08
Shock

What a load of bollocks, larry.

I have already told you I am looking at the whole population.

You are looking at a small slice of UK-based, young women.

You are the one cherry picking stats here (and doing it badly, too).

If you consider it a waste of time to think about why women are, on the whole, struggling more than men, I think you and I are unlikely to agree.

EBearhug · 20/08/2015 16:09

The Normans had a crack at Wales too. I am shocked at your cymruphobia.

My Welsh history prior to about the 18th century is pretty patchy, I have to admit. However, if you want to know about the history of Merthyr Tydfil in the industrial revolution, I'm yer gal.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/08/2015 16:10

Who doesn't want to know the history of Merthyr Tydfil in the industrial revolution? Grin

White people really do love to argue.

And relax

Oh yes it's cherry picking to point out that although most nurses are women, senior nurses are over-represented by men.

And that although most teachers are women, most headteachers are men and that heads of dept are over represented by men.

And that although girls are getting better grades than boys, they are underrepresented in STEM subjects.

Cherry picking, all that.

Oops, that was the kingie.

Buffy, I've already done that bit of pedantry.

Kingie1 · 20/08/2015 16:13

Merthyr a shit hole. Has to be up there with the most angry football supporters going

Merthyr is a dump these days, but it has a very interesting history.

What about all the people who weren't called Norman? Why are you ignoring them?

AskBasil · 20/08/2015 16:18

Yes they did. Henry III invaded Wales and was defeated by the Welsh.

Not all the Welsh defeated him of course. Only some of them, Llewellyn included.

'And that although girls are getting better grades than boys, they are underrepresented in STEM subjects.'

This one always gets me because what I am meant to think is that the selection is biased but the higher grades are caused by greater brain power/application and have nothing to do with educational bias.

Both halves of that sentence need addressing.

I'm allowed just to roll about laughing here, aren't I? Right?

So when Cambridge Physics dept. changed their syllabus and got more women in, it was clearly just that women aged 18-21 suddenly developed greater brain power/application, right?

It wasn't that there was any 'educational bias' in there before.

God no!

Thank goodness you're here to help. I do hope those idiots at Cambridge physics are combing MN for the off-beam pontifications of misogynists today. They'll learn a lot.
