Not all Romans

The Romans built the first roads in Britain.

But not all Romans

The Vikings built ships which sailed as far as America.

Not all Vikings.

Rabbits are known for reproducing really quickly.

Not all Rabbits.

Etc. etc. I think I will add "not all" whenever anyone refers to anything ever, until people stop saying Not All Men as a first response to a class analysis of men's behaviour.

Christine should that be papal bill

Or is there (was there) such a thing as a papal bull?

I mean, what with weird stuff and religion and the olden days I'm more than happy to continue with my mental image of the papal bull, going around forbidding things, I just wanted to check. It is quite an impressive berobed bull, in my head. And it can talk Confused

PlaysWellWithOthers · 21/08/2015 12:23

No exclusion there cadno. But nice try. 3/10 for effort

scallopsrgreat · 21/08/2015 12:26

I'm loving the posts on this thread.

Not all posts.

YonicScrewdriver · 21/08/2015 12:28

No, a bull was a thing. Assume that "bulletin" comes from same source word...

JeanneDeMontbaston · 21/08/2015 12:29

I think both are from the Latin 'bulla' - the seal you put on documents.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 21/08/2015 12:53

Aw. I was hoping there was an actual ceremonial bull that got all done up and then put it's hoof out to say when it disagreed or something Grin

MsMermaid · 21/08/2015 12:57

I like your image whirlpool. I'm picturing a bull dressed as the pope and it's much more fun than a bit of paper, no matter how fancily it's sealed.

YonicScrewdriver · 21/08/2015 12:57

You're thinking of that octopus who predicted World Cup results.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 21/08/2015 13:01

Wasn't the Borgia heraldic animal the bull? Lots of bull depictions in the Vatican.

But yes, Jeanne is right about bulla being the Latin root for Papal bulls.

cadnowyllt · 21/08/2015 13:03

Playswell and Yonic. Included or excluded, to be honest either is equally fine by me.

Such threads as this - there have been a few - reminds me of the scene from Life of Brian where Brian is telling the crowd of people outside his home that they are all individuals. Ouch - Touchy subject there mate - not going to go down well with some of the Millie Tants.

ChristineDePisan · 21/08/2015 13:04

I have never managed to get past the obvious image of the Diet of Worms... Grin

PlaysWellWithOthers · 21/08/2015 17:03

Sounds yummy, no?

EBearhug · 21/08/2015 17:13

There was a children's book, "How To Eat Fried Worms." I remember he had to swallow thr last one raw to beat the dealine for the bet.

I almost shared my bath with a worm this morning. No idea where it came from. (Earthworm, rather than intestinal, though fortunately no sign of those, either.)

PlaysWellWithOthers · 21/08/2015 17:36

Millie Tants, eh?

How funny. Anyone who doesn't agree with you is automatically an old, fat, ugly, humourless lesbian in dungarees. A small hint for you, wild fox. If you don't want to be treated like a stereotype, it's probably best not to act like one, yes?

0/10 for effort there.

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2015 20:05

Somebody didn't say Milly Tant, did they? Oh, purhlease!

Leeza2 · 21/08/2015 23:44

Just popping in hours too late to smile a little smile at jeanne's limited atonement joke. Which was very clever.

Unlike this " being all hard and clever against a man and scoring a victory for her bra-burning sisters" which makes you sounds about 15

AskBasil · 21/08/2015 23:53

Not all feminists burn their bras, cadnow

At least, not on purpose.

YonicScrewdriver · 22/08/2015 08:19

Ironing bras?

Have I been doing domesticity wrong again?

MsMermaid · 22/08/2015 08:32

Ironing bras sounds far too much like makework to me. I don't think I'll ever intentionally burn my bra either, I'm not comfortable when not wearing one.

QuiteIrregular · 22/08/2015 08:42

Funnily enough, I always find that the men who're most eager to insist 'Not all men' are extremely keen to claim that they speak for all men. Is curious.

EBearhug · 22/08/2015 08:48

I was wearing the bra (and not much else on top.) I lifted the iron so as not to burn the garment I was smoothing while I was distracted by something on the TV. For some reason, I brought my hand closer to my body, forgetting it was holding a hot iron. There was a flesh/hotplate meeting. Then there was swearing. (Scar is mostly faded to invisibility now, though.)

TeiTetua · 22/08/2015 15:31

Of course depictions of naked women are way overdone, but let's have our myths done properly--mermaids do NOT wear bras (maybe not ALL mermaids). Or do we prefer some overdressed hussy out of Disney, with a name looted from Shakespeare?

Get it right, dammit:

Anyway, think of the difficulty in burning one underwater.
