Not all Romans

AskBasil · 20/08/2015 08:20

The Romans built the first roads in Britain.

But not all Romans

The Vikings built ships which sailed as far as America.

Not all Vikings.

Rabbits are known for reproducing really quickly.

Not all Rabbits.

Etc. etc. I think I will add "not all" whenever anyone refers to anything ever, until people stop saying Not All Men as a first response to a class analysis of men's behaviour.

Buffy,

Not by the man, though. I am not making any claims as to how much weight should be attached to my views. I do try and use stats fairly, though.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/08/2015 16:43

Bias is interesting larry, yes.

I think we may have cottoned on to that fascinating fact too.

larrygrylls · 20/08/2015 16:45

Jeanne,

Do you have any way of communicating not based on sarcasm and insult? It is a bit sad given your intellectual pedigree.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/08/2015 16:46

Oh, I use charm and humour too, larry. It's just not directed at you right now. Did you imagine you'd done something to deserve it? That's a bit sad, considering your history of expecting women to fluff up your ego, and our history of telling you we're not interested.

Let me assure you my ego is far more boosted by the fantastic set of GCSE results my students achieved today in Physics than whatever you might say.

Normally those with charm and humour are not those who claim those attributes for themselves. Of course, you may be the honourable exception.

Kingie1 · 20/08/2015 16:49

Yeah, nice quote. Good one. 10 out of 10 for effort

EBearhug · 20/08/2015 16:50

kingie, if you've got an hour to spare, this video is quite good on unconscious bias. Also google stereotype thread. And ... there's loads of stuff out there on creating environments which can be more hostile to one group or another. I'll leave Jeanne or others to answer for academic courses. You can read about Athena Swan here - www.ecu.ac.uk/equality-charters/athena-swan/

"We now have a company that states they are keen to promote men specifically. Is that fair? Of course it is not. So it cannot be fair to have a pro female promotion policy."

There have been fairly recent drives to get more men into teaching, that's one I can think of off the top of my head. Additionally there was going to be a drive to recruit people who were leaving the army, or something? (Not specifically men, but many of them would have been, and the talk from the govt around "instilling discipline" from ex army people had a strong "we mean blokes" feel to it). I don't know if that went ahead.

Anyway, far from there being an outcry that this was not fair, many people said what a brilliant initiative it was.

I'll see if I can find some links.

The 'charm and humour' bit was part of the sarcasm, larry.

I'm really pleased for your students.

When my students do well, I remind them that the credit is entirely theirs, and that it would be arrogant for me to take it. Smile

HapShawl · 20/08/2015 16:52

"Thought I was brilliant..."

So did all the boys who studied physics and maths alongside me at A level. They had been told that all their lives, and made it clear to me. I thought I wasn't good enough to keep up, though they were subjects I loved, so didn't choose them for university. I got A grades.

Thanks Ebearhug. I'll take a look.

Buffy, no problem. What a player Joel was, eh?

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 20/08/2015 16:55

Interesting I didn't realise it was established and happening, I just remember when it was mooted:
troops to teachers programme

article from June saying we need to get men into primary school teaching and expressing concern about the results from boys

In fact if you google "men into teaching uk" you get loads of stuff.

There have been similar initiatives around getting women into male dominated roles, but IME these are more frequently met with scepticism and "why?" type attitudes.

I'm just saying I wouldn't open or close with it. Maybe start with a solid 5 minster of your Norman material.

You could work that in as mime section. Very good

BreakingDad77 · 20/08/2015 17:10

Can I also ask a question? If you, as a man, had to walk alone down a dark alley at night, would you be more worried about being mugged if you were approached by a man, or by a woman?

Exactly, a man is, in the majority of the cases to be a perpetrator, when i walked home at night I would have absolutely no fear of women or even a group of women. I would actively avoid groups of men at night and I'd be wary if it was one guy.

Disregarder I dont know on what planet you can equate the two.

Disregarder from your posting it looks like you have just come to troll the creating some strawman for you to vanquish.

Women technically have equal rights and hold high position, but take america it has a black president has that solved racism?

4 year olds are starting reception next month.

Not all 4 year olds.
