Healthy living support thread for feminists

In response to a few discussions we've had down the pub - there are some of us who are striving for better health through better diets and more exercise, but who struggle among the usual support groups where it's all about looking better rather than good health. And it certainly can be tricky as a feminist, walking that fine line between not conforming to beauty ideals through dieting and making sure you actually look after your body through a healthy lifestyle.

So here is a support thread for those of us who are trying to eat better and get more exercise.

Me, I could do with losing a bit over 2 stone to get back to a healthy weight. I had an ankle injury after running a marathon about 3 years back, and between not being able to exercise and the stress of my PhD (I'm a stress binge eater) I gained 3 stone and lost all my hard-earned fitness. I'm finally getting back on track, I've lost nearly a stone and am hitting the exercise hard again. The hardest bit has been getting back into running - while my ankle is better, my joints are really feeling the extra weight I'm carrying. It's also hard to do karate when your wobble gets in the way of you doing a good kick and you get out of breath when sparring. So I need to lose weight in order to enjoy my sports hobbies again. I'm taking it slowly, doing Slimming World but not religiously - I'm not in a hurry to lost the weight, but I also need to watch that I don't take it so slowly that it never happens!

Yesterday I ran 8km, which is really encouraging as I was still going strong at the end. Just a couple of months ago I was run/walking 5km and would have welcomed death at the end! So I feel like some kind of switch has been flipped and my body now "remembers" how to run. The down side is that both ankles are aching and stiff today.

My diet has been rather rubbish the last couple of weeks, including a few binges, and I put some pounds back on, but I'm in that good place mentally now and hopefully ready to focus on getting my body healthy again. I loved being lean and fit and athletic, and I'm not getting any younger (thoroughly middle-aged), so I feel like the window of opportunity for getting myself in a sustained state of good health without drastic measures being required is closing!

Signing in, back later...

Sounds like a great idea for a thread.

Sera- have you done any races? Or plan to do any? I'm the type of person to be more motivated if I have a goal so maybe that would help you? Karate sounds good to, I was discussing today about getting my daughter involved in a martial art when she is older. I think it provides a lot of useful lessons and also I'd like to think proves to her her body is more than just an object for men. If that makes any sense?

Herring- what's your sport if you don't mind me asking?

I'm a massive sport and nutrition geek. Love talking about it Blush

Yep signing on. Since having children I've put on weight. Until my mid thirties I was very fit and healthy weight. Now not so much!

I need to get motivated to get off my arse and do some running. Did C25k last year, successfully and really enjoyed it and then seemed to have cold after cold, after cold for about 5 months so it fell by the wayside. I did find I started losing weight once I got up to about 20 min runs.

I also need to lose the puddings!

MsDragons · 16/08/2015 19:58

I'm in. I've been trying to lose the same 3 stone for about 15 years now Blush. I was doing SW for a few months, and lost 1.5st, but I lost motivation when things got busy at work (writing reports at end of school year) so I've been eating too much crap for a couple of months now. I'm starting back at SW on Saturday, and will be going back to swimming/exercise classes soon (this week hopefully but its difficult when we're in holiday mode because we don't have much routine)

Mide7 · 16/08/2015 20:04

Buffy I said I love talking about it, not that I know anything about it Grin

ApocalypseThen · 16/08/2015 20:14

Great idea. I piled it on over pregnancy and my doctor has been clear that it's time to regain a healthier weight. Definitely in!

SeraOfeliaFalfurrias · 16/08/2015 20:22

Welcome everyone!

Herring, this is most definitely the place for you. I for one plan to be discussing sports and exercise at least as often, if not more, as I do food.

Mide - I've done two races since my "return" to running, one was a race for life. I was actually looking on line last night for races to help motivate me but I couldn't find any that fitted the bill. There don't seem to be as many mud races up where I live now as there were back in Surrey, which is a great shame Sad. Never mind, I've started doing Parkruns, and they're nearly as good, and it's very motivating to be trying to beat your time every week. My favourite distance is a half marathon, so ultimately I hope to get back into good enough shape to start running those again.

As for your daughter and karate (or another martial art), I can highly recommend it. It's great for fitness, discipline and confidence. And I have to say that I really enjoy being able to walk down the street and know that if anyone was stupid enough to try anything with me, they would probably regret it. It's incredibly liberating!

As my small brag for the evening, I have just made a great big tupperware full of roast veg and quinoa for this week's work lunches. All very SW-friendly.

May I join in?

I am slim but have never been fit or even really enjoyed exercise. I want to improve my fitness and general health for my daughters - to set an example and to be there for them for as long as possible!

I started c25k aaaaaaaaages ago but it has taken me until last week to finish it due to a couple of injuries and not being able to fit 3 runs in in a week.

Anyway, recently I have been binging lots and not running when I should. I can feel my clothes getting tight and I am getting increasingly lethargic!!

And I'm getting bored of people telling me I don't need to worry as I'm thin already!

Mide7 · 16/08/2015 20:35

Surprised about mud runs Sera- they seem to have exploded recently. I can't understand your "favourite" distance being half marathon Shock

That's what I was thinking about a martial art. I think the benefits are numerous. I did Thai boxing for about 8 months and loved it. I'd also like her to be involved in a team sport as well... She's 18 months so I've got a little while to go get Grin

YonicScrewdriver · 16/08/2015 20:42

DH and I have been stepping up the exercise of late.

I would love to do more exercise but I find it so boring. The only exercise I like is dancing but hate the having to smooch up close with people in dance class.

I fear I may be a lost cause Confused

YonicScrewdriver · 16/08/2015 20:50

Exercise in front of TV or with podcasts/books?

thatstoast · 16/08/2015 20:50

I'm going to check in. I know nothing about exercise but I'm a big fan of slimming world. I list 4 stone before I was pregnant and I'm almost back to pre-prenancy weight. Maybe another 5lbs to go. I would like to lose about another 3 stone though.

This feels like a safe place to ask a really stupid question. What are the benefits of exercise, other than weight loss?

YonicScrewdriver · 16/08/2015 20:52

Endorphins and higher metabolic rates and stronger bones reducing osteoporosis risk

faintlyoptimistic · 16/08/2015 20:53

I love the idea of a martial art! I've just googled and found a group with classes for both me and my 4 year old daughter... Really tempted but I hate exercise classes! I am so uncoordinated!!

Might send them an email though...

SeraOfeliaFalfurrias · 16/08/2015 20:55

This is absolutely a safe place, thattoast! Grin In addition to Yonic's list, also lower heart rate, more lean muscle instead of fat, reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, blood pressure problems...

Budgeup- you're not a lost cause at all. It's just finding something you enjoy. You can get really complicated with exercise and nutrition but at the end of the day, the best one you can do is the one you stick to.

Have you tried something like Zumba? Excuse my ignorance if I'm barking up the wrong dancing tree.

Thatstoast- there are numerous benefits and I prob will forget some. From a purely health stand point, things like improved heart and lung health, releases endorphins so can help with mental health. Resistance training can help with bone health to.

SeraOfeliaFalfurrias · 16/08/2015 21:00

Mide - I was also surprised about the lack of races (of any kind) around here, but it's very rural. And flatter than the proverbial pancake, so no fell races, unfortunately.

BudgeUp - have you tried exercise classes which are dance-based like Zumba or jazzercise? I used to hate exercise when I was younger - school was all about team and ball sports, which I suck at! It was only quite late into my 20s that I started exploring different types of exercise and found that I really enjoy it. I do get bored easily though and could never do just one type of exercise all the time. I generally have at least 3 or 4 on the go at any one time. I guess that's why I was good at triathlons! Smile

The only thing I've found that I enjoy is running - I've tried everything else! In fact, I'd discounted running before even trying it because I assumed it wasn't for me...

Maybe give it a shot BudgUp? I love seeing how far I've gone and if I've done better than my last run.

faintlyoptimistic · 16/08/2015 21:09

BudgeUp that should be!
