Healthy living support thread for feminists

In response to a few discussions we've had down the pub - there are some of us who are striving for better health through better diets and more exercise, but who struggle among the usual support groups where it's all about looking better rather than good health. And it certainly can be tricky as a feminist, walking that fine line between not conforming to beauty ideals through dieting and making sure you actually look after your body through a healthy lifestyle.

So here is a support thread for those of us who are trying to eat better and get more exercise.

Me, I could do with losing a bit over 2 stone to get back to a healthy weight. I had an ankle injury after running a marathon about 3 years back, and between not being able to exercise and the stress of my PhD (I'm a stress binge eater) I gained 3 stone and lost all my hard-earned fitness. I'm finally getting back on track, I've lost nearly a stone and am hitting the exercise hard again. The hardest bit has been getting back into running - while my ankle is better, my joints are really feeling the extra weight I'm carrying. It's also hard to do karate when your wobble gets in the way of you doing a good kick and you get out of breath when sparring. So I need to lose weight in order to enjoy my sports hobbies again. I'm taking it slowly, doing Slimming World but not religiously - I'm not in a hurry to lost the weight, but I also need to watch that I don't take it so slowly that it never happens!

Yesterday I ran 8km, which is really encouraging as I was still going strong at the end. Just a couple of months ago I was run/walking 5km and would have welcomed death at the end! So I feel like some kind of switch has been flipped and my body now "remembers" how to run. The down side is that both ankles are aching and stiff today.

My diet has been rather rubbish the last couple of weeks, including a few binges, and I put some pounds back on, but I'm in that good place mentally now and hopefully ready to focus on getting my body healthy again. I loved being lean and fit and athletic, and I'm not getting any younger (thoroughly middle-aged), so I feel like the window of opportunity for getting myself in a sustained state of good health without drastic measures being required is closing!

Hello and welcome, manatee.

Not that I want to encourage you to drink, feckity, but I have two friends around 40yo who have recently found they react very badly to wine, after being fine drinking it for years. So it could be that your problem is just with wine.

I have a streaming, awful cold. So I'm not exercising and I'm comfort eating crap. Boo hiss. I hate colds!

Hello all

Went to the gym first thing this morning (it opens at 7am). Better mojo than last time, I decided to stick to my "best" achievement on the machines not extend it and then give up early. Worked much better! Going to try going swimming tomorrow night.

I know it's not about weight but am a bit dejected that I haven't yet lost any weight. Never mind, I do feel fitter!

Thefitfatty · 20/09/2015 05:55

That's awful feckity but like Sera said, I also have friends who developed an intolerance to wine. They generally stick to a vodka, gin or beer when they choose to have a drink now.

Feeling so much better this week then last Grin, can't wait to hit the gym and really work it. Today is chest day, and I like chest day so looking forward to it. (Tomorrow is back day, so can't say the same :P )

Thefitfatty · 20/09/2015 05:55

Yes,Yonic but have you lost inches?

YonicScrewdriver · 20/09/2015 08:23

I'm not sure TFF, DH thinks my shape has changed a bit.

Went on a long walk in The sun yesterday PM and feeling more postive today!

Thefitfatty · 20/09/2015 11:00

There's always going to be down days. Just went through one last week, just feeling really gross about myself (Didn't help AF was on the way).

feckityfeck · 20/09/2015 13:55

Weightloss can happen in strange patterns Yonic. I was stuck at a particular weight for ages, every time I stepped on the scales I was within about 100g of the same weight, then suddenly this week I've dropped almost a kg for no reason at all - I've had a really rubbish few days with diet and not been at the gym nearly as much as normal. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense.

Glad you're feeling better about things now FF, it's also weird how our perceptions of our bodies/selves depend so much on mood(/hormones).

I'm clearly just going to have to work hard to get a taste for vodka/gin/beer Grin. Though I don't think I'll ever like gin, yuck (sacrilege on MN, I know...)

YonicScrewdriver · 20/09/2015 17:02

I've now developed the thread lurgy! Off for a nap with a hot chocolate (made with semi skimmed milk!)

Thefitfatty · 21/09/2015 06:20

You can try rum feckity. I like mixing mine with marschino cherries, diet coke and lemon juice. Delicious. :)

feckityfeck · 21/09/2015 09:37

I'm just going to have to stick to cocktails aren't I? Shucks.

To add to the pattern of unwellness on this healthy living thread, I think I've got shingles. I've had it before and I've just realised I recognise the weird tingling and tenderness above my hairline and around my eye that I've had for the last few days. MN helped diagnose me last time so I got to the GP quickly and got antivirals before I got a horrible rash so I'm off to the GP again this afternoon and hopefully will avoid the worst of it again.

Explains why I've felt so run down recently. I napped too on Saturday afternoon, I haven't done that for ages, not since baby/toddler related sleep deprivation. Hope the nap and the hot chocolate did the trick for you Yonic.

Thefitfatty · 21/09/2015 11:22

Jeez. This thread is just a pot of sickness. Although could have to do with the change in weather.

Today was back day and my buddy at the gym decided I needed to lift heavier. So every time I would reach for a weight, he'd hand me a heavier one. To be honest he was totally right and I could lift more then I was, however, I will hate him tomorrow. (Great change of pace from the idiots who tell me to lift lighter though).

YonicScrewdriver · 21/09/2015 12:47

Nap was good! I managed an hour at level 6 on my home exercise bike (in front of the TV) before it as I suspected I wouldn't be up for late night swimming. In work today but not feeling well!

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 08:22

Ugh, bad food day yesterday, chocolate for lunch, happy meal for tea! I did have lots of fruit when I made it home though. Still got the lurgy!

I'm shattered today. I've got drugs from the gp for the shingles, though they mostly stop it getting worse rather than make it go away. I haven't been able to sleep past 4am the last two nights. I've got tons to be getting on with but can't seem to make it off the sofa. I also can't compose an interesting and flowing paragraph. Sorry for the slightly dull and disjointed post!

Good progress Buffy. Thumbs up Grin.

I have no more words.

Thefitfatty · 22/09/2015 11:21

My back is sore, my shoulder workout was crap, I've got a cough. I need some wine.

feckityfeck · 22/09/2015 11:21

Just realised I have actually exercised today, if you count a 20min walk back from dropping the car at the garage, and prob a 20min walk to go get it again later.

I did have more words after all.

feckityfeck · 22/09/2015 11:22

Oh god FF, what's wrong with us all. This healthy living business is clearly no good for anyone.

Thefitfatty · 22/09/2015 11:24

That's good exercise when you're sick, good job.

I swear, healthy or not, everyone I know (but my DH grrrr) is sick!

antimatter · 22/09/2015 11:37

Has anyone considered buying electric bike?
Hills around me in Surrey mean that as an unfit person I am unable to climb them pedaling.

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 20:52

Feeling awful with lurgy!

feckityfeck · 22/09/2015 21:19

How is your lurgy manifesting itself Yonic? Give it a kick.

I am tired and wobbly.

How does an electric bike work? Do you switch to the motor and scoot along, or does it just give you a bit of help while you pedal?

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 21:36

Coughs, snot and sneezes! Lovely!

feckityfeck · 22/09/2015 21:43

Urgh. Lurgy. You have my sympathies, and tissues offered at arm's length.

I need to stay up to take a tablet, but then I really hope I sleep ok tonight. I've got to start on a birthday cake for the weekend tomorrow.

YonicScrewdriver · 24/09/2015 13:48

Finally feeling better! Have been eating unhealthily though.
