Ooh ooh! Do I get to start it?

Wine and cake all round. And a celebratory burst on the patriarchy-blasting cannon!

Old pub here

Hello! Yes I'm still here buffy! Sorry, it's been a busy few days. Just catching up now whilst the wee one's asleep.

coldcanary · 24/07/2016 21:16

Ok I've lurked long enough Smile
I've been on MN on and off for about 6 years under various flounces names and have only ever dipped my big toe into the feminist boards twice.
My 10 year old daughter loves Ghostbusters! I was sceptical as a huge fan of the original but after the first 5 minutes we were both hooked. Strong, clever and funny female characters and great special effects. Chris Hemsworth was utter rubbish but you can't have everything Grin keep with it because the first 5 minutes are frankly crap.
DD1 has watched the original and still prefers that one (as do I) but she really enjoyed it & is hoping for a sequel.

Felascloak · 24/07/2016 21:21

Hi canary! Maybe I will go and see it. Been putting it off because I love the original so much

Thelilywhite · 24/07/2016 21:26

Hello cold canary Welcome to the pub/Tree House. I don't post much but lurk a lot and have learned much ! Agree with what you said about ghost busters. Went to see it last night and it really lifted my spirits Grin

JacquettaWoodville · 24/07/2016 21:49

Hoorah! The treehouse is a success!

coldcanary · 24/07/2016 22:04

Fellascloak there are lots of lovely affectionate cameos in the film from as many of the original cast as they could get - I suppose in a way it could be seen as the original cast giving their blessing the new film (even Ray Parker Jr redid the song) & it's dedicated to Harold Ramis which was a lovely touch.
My problem with the film was that in the original the character quirks were just accepted and not made a big deal of, but in the remake the quirks seem to be exaggerated in an odd way.
Ok I've had wine & am probably not going to articulate myself well but it seemed that because they were women they had to exaggerate the quirkiness of the characters and make the fact that they are extremely intelligent seem weird.

erinaceus · 24/07/2016 23:21

Hi coldcanary

Welcome to the pub. I am new here myself. It is interesting to hear your take on Gostbusters. The original is not really on my radar, and I am interested to find out whether the new film stands on its own.

For now though I am having a nice cup of camomile tea and pondering the meaning of my laundry which I outsourced this week being collected and delivered by a man.

I usually love doing laundry. However, a laundry crisis situation developed so we called upon [[https://www.laundryheap.com]] to avert it. So far, so clean clothes delivered at 11pm on a Sunday.

erinaceus · 24/07/2016 23:21

Need a quick rant - I know the "life and style" pages of the Guardian are notoriously misogynistic, but they've really taken the biscuit today - articles on why pole dancing should be an olympic sport and "spanking, caning and consent play: how feminist porn frees women from shame". Argh!!!!

Hmm indeed, Buffy.

As to Ghostbusters and quirky intelligence, tbh, I disagree. I thought their characteristics actually made them seem more relatable. But I may be projecting here as a rather bonkers nerd myself (I actually liked Erin's outfits except for the bowtie which I would have felt was strangling me).

FreshwaterSelkie · 29/07/2016 15:46

It's Friday! The pub is OPEN!

I shall shortly be having a glass of wine, and perhaps a frothing screaming rant that goes like this:

fuckthefuckingpatriarchyfuckitallfuckitall
fuckthefuckingpatriarchyfuckitallfuckitall
fuckthefuckingpatriarchyfuckitallfuckitall
fuckthefuckingpatriarchyfuckitallfuckitall

Rinse and repeat

Wine Smile Wine Smile

Who's with me?

articles on why pole dancing should be an olympic sport

I have seen several circus and physical theatre groups where poles, fixed and moveable have been used as part of aerial gymnastics. These involve significant heights of poles with performers (male and female) being prevented from falling only by sheer strength and/or swathes of ribbons. It can be spectacular and very beautiful but the whole tone, intention and concept is a million miles from pole dancing.

Hurrah for Friday!

Down with the patriarchy, down with bloody gender, and down with male violence.

(Also down with female violence of course, but there's a heck of a lot less of that about.)

paddypants13 · 31/07/2016 17:47

Just been reading the thread about men in Iran wearing hijabs. Clicked the link on the article and read the article. Below it were 6 facts about women's rights around the world.

My particular "favourite" was that it is legal for a man in the Bahamas to rape his wife if she is over 14! I was Shock. Why is it legal to have a wife who's under 14 or even under 18 in the first place? As for the rape law, I don't know what to say.

It gives me new courage to fight!

Xenophile · 31/07/2016 21:19

This is an interesting if scary read The Husband Who Uses Prostitutes

And yes, fuck the fucking patriarchy and all it stands for, including fucking pole dancing.

Lovely to see some new faces here, stick around, most of the natives are friendly, and the ones that aren't can be ignored or laughed at by turns.

paddypants13 · 07/08/2016 18:34

Goodness me. I watched a video about MGTOWs. I'd watched that video so my Youtube brought up a load of MGTOW vids for me to watch.

Curiosity got the better of me and what can I say? These men are obsessed with women. They are obsessed with the way we look, the way we act, taking away our rights and generally going out of the way to hurt and mistreat women. I knew these people existed but I didn't realise there were so many of them and the venom they have towards women.

I also made the mistake of reading an article by Roosh V. His article about the sort of woman he wants to have his children is hilarious! I love the fact that he wants the mother of his children to be a virgin or have had less than 3 sexual partners. He actually acknowledges this is so the woman believes him to be the greatest lover in the world. (I'm paraphrasing but you get the gist.)

I cannot believe that these men believe women are the root of all their problems.

JacquettaWoodville · 07/08/2016 18:37

Weird, isn't it, paddy? Surely quietly ignoring women would be a better way to GTOW.

Happy 1 year birthday to this thread!

JessicasCrocodile · 09/08/2016 18:40

I need help. I'm dating someone younger than me (he's 25, I'm 31) and it is freaking me out! I know it's because other people will judge in a way they wouldn't if i was the younger one, and I refuse to give in to the stupid sexism. Anyone got any top tips for ignoring the patriarchy?

paddypants13 · 09/08/2016 20:27

Go for it! My dh and I met when I was 31 and he was 25. No one bats an eyelid. You might get the odd jokey comment but just ignore.

JessicasCrocodile · 10/08/2016 01:11

Thanks paddy, I just need to get over myself really. He is cute and I'd not think twice about just being happy if the sexes were reversed.

On another note, I've really made an effort to refer to "women's 7s" and "men's 7s" rather than "women's 7s" and "rugby 7s". I love the olympics and I'm having my own mini revolution about women's sport while it's on. I won't have my nieces feeling othered in sport.

erinaceus · 10/08/2016 01:41

Routinely refer to him as "my tomboy"?

This suggestion is sense-of-humour-dependent - yours and his. Please do ignore it as you prefer.

Another Olympics fan here waves. The Olympics just makes me really happy, I am never quite able to put my finger on why. There is an MN thread for Olympics naysayers. Is there one for Olympics fans?

JacquettaWoodville · 10/08/2016 08:12

Go for it Jessica!
