Hot Girls Wanted.

This 2015 Sundance Film Festival breakout documentary from producer Rashida Jones spotlights the “amateur” porn industry and the women it exploits

I watched this documentary yesterday, and wondered what others thought of it. ( it's grim viewing and not work friendly)

I found it alarming. The thought that 40% of online porn features abuse and that the number one search term for porn is "teen" worries me. One if the girls is choked on a penis and large plastic penis until her eyes are bloodshot and she vomits, she's then told to eat the vomit with her face pushed in it. How can anyone be aroused by that? It's frightening.

Their descriptions of their experiences are saddening. I'll copy my posts from the pub, but I just wondered what others who watched the documentary feel about it, and how teenage girls in porn are treat.

OP why does "teen" being one of the most searched words concern you? Out of interest.

did somebody really ask that question ? Hmm

almondcakes · 03/06/2015 20:25

It is often claimed that 65% of men watch porn. If 40% of content is violent, and for the sake of argument we assume that content is watched by 40% of the users, then that would mean about a quarter of all men watch violent porn.

I don't find that implausible.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 20:28

Well the preference when it comes to sexual fantasies.

This is a product of society though, and to an extent people's tastes are being shaped by what they are exposed to when they are very young and their sexualities are developing. If you link hot woman and sex and a certain level of violence in a child's brain often enough it will sink in I think? Or yes lots of men like the idea.

I don't think that all the men who watch this would want to do it in real life, though. By a long chalk, probably (hopefully?). The problem is then back to the situation in the industry that is feeding these fantasies, for the people working within that industry.

But we do know that sex offences against females (adults and teens) are incredibly common don't we. So, maybe it is a bit hopeful. Not saying that men who watch this are rapists there, just that actually there are a lot more rapists out there than we might hope and their taste in porn is likely to be pretty grim.

Also I guess the number of men who pay for sex shows up another fairly large group of men who aren't interested in whether women actually want the sex they are having and arguably a subsection of those are going to enjoy the fact that they know the woman they are fucking doesn't want to be doing it.

Sorry this is all a bit stream of consciousness.

I was just talking to DH again about porn and sex and our children (fun in this household isn't it!) and I was saying that for young people the issue I guess is that they have always wanted to experiment (boys and girls) but what they are having as suggestions to experiment with is coming out of this frankly misogynist industry, and of course the risks for girls in terms of physical damage and pregnancy and disease are higher. When I was a girl both boys and girls were up for having a go at "stuff" but even then it was to do with a list of things and they were mainly (looking back) all about male pleasure / male orgasm and now of course much more tricky things are being added to that "list".

expatinscotland · 03/06/2015 20:29

Not sure I could watch this.

MovingToAlnwick · 03/06/2015 20:30

I watched this the other day. I don't really know what to say. It was horrible to watch. Hmm

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 03/06/2015 20:30

I made it to the penis choking, vomiting bit then shut it off.

The 'teen' thing bothers me as that describes a girl of 13 to 19 years of age. Its disgusting that men are wanting to sank over a girl who looks 13!

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 03/06/2015 20:31

*wank not sank!

shaska · 03/06/2015 20:31

I find it very hard to believe only 65% of men in the UK watch porn.

I don't think I know any who don't. I heard of a guy once who said he didn't. He was thought enough of an outlier to have been mentioned as an anecdote by a man I know who was present when he said it.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 20:32

Also I am always aware that this is all a very heterosexual POV, I have no idea what it is like being either a lesbian or a gay man and having first sexual experiences and what sorts of dynamics go on there, I think that would be interesting and might yield results.

I suspect a lot of this is down to the male / female dynamic (whether there is an instrinsic one or it's society or whatever) but I may well be wrong. I just don't know.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 20:36

shaska the figure will include older / elderly men who will be less likely to watch it.

And it's not "have ever watched" which is going to be a much higher figure.

almondcakes · 03/06/2015 20:40

Shaska, I think there is a lot of pressure on men to claim they watch it.

shaska · 03/06/2015 20:45

mmmm I dunno about that almond. Pressure on young men and teenagers I'm sure. But in the 30s ish bracket - I don't think so. Maybe among louts but I don't know louts! If anything I think most of the ones I know wouldn't want to admit they watch as much as they do.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 20:46

I think most men have watched porn. It depends on the question doesn't it. Have you ever / have you in the last 12 months / do you regularly.

wuvvalin · 03/06/2015 20:54

I'm skeptical about this claim- "40% of online porn features abuse". Did someone really look at every single porn image and video online? How did they arrive at this figure? And was their research biased (ie if they intentionally set out to find material of this sort that would bias the results).

And what definition of "abuse" are we going by? Real abuse or is consensual BDSM material counted as "abuse" for the purpose of the statistic?

wuvvalin · 03/06/2015 20:57

" 6% of men admit to being rapists if you just describe the act rather than calling it rape"

I'm also skeptical of surveys where word twisting can be involved. How exactly was the act described? I refuse to accept such a statistic unless I see the exact wording of the Q, the exact responses given and how those responses were interpreted.

e.g. if you were to ask men if they have ever had a one night stand where alcohol was involved a lot of them are bound to say yes, but from that alone it's not accurate to brand them as rapists.

YonicScrewdriver · 03/06/2015 20:58

You again?

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 20:59

Yes I can see you are very sceptical there wuv.

YonicScrewdriver · 03/06/2015 20:59

And that's not what the questions are. But if you can work a login, you can work google, so off you pop and do your own research.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 21:01

lol who again. Someone who feels sceptical a lot?

it's interesting isn't it. From my own experiences I know that there are a lot of nasty men out there, and that a lot of mainstream porn is nasty.

I wonder how some people can have missed this! The nasty men bit I guess maybe you wouldn't know if you're not female. The mainstream porn thing is obvious though cos it's like right THERE and of course the people arguing about how NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that can't be right are almost certainly the ones watching plenty so they know this to be true having seen it with their eyes and everything.

Odd.

almondcakes · 03/06/2015 21:03

Even MRAs accept those studies of rapists. Karen Strang did a video on it.

I thought the 40% figure was for violence against women, not abuse.

The abuse figure includes verbal abuse and is usually much higher than that.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 21:03

Or is it that if you're watching it as a man with a male perspective you are empathising with the man and that's kind of OK. great, even.

Watching if you're female and empathising with the female, it's dear god that doesn't look like fun oh she winced there she looks miserable wow that's not good OK I'm crossing my legs now can we watch something else please.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 21:05

Loads of women prefer gay porn don't they (men).

There is a reason for this.

And no I don't have a stat.
