I said healthy thin, what I meant by this is not being unhealthy thin. For example, not starving yourself or replacing meals with cigarettes, etc.
Helena, you changed your lifestyle to lose weight, congrats. I'm saying that with education people may have a better chance of not reaching a size 28 before deciding to change. Education also allows you to understand your body and feel in control of it, IMO. Allowing a healthy approach to weightloss regarding nutrition and exercise. It allows you to fuel your body in right way for a particular activity. Making that activity as safe as possible.
I do think that the average weight is going up and I do think it's a problem. I don't think that the skeleton, organs can cope well with excess weight.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 16:50

King i actually had/have a nutrition qualification. It wasnt lack of education It was lack of money when i was signing on back in the late 1990s. Workfare which i had to pay to attend and so couldnt afford to eat healthily. It was do workfare or be sanctioned. So the money went on paying to travel to a job with no wage.

It was only when i found a job working nights in a sex chatline office which paid enough so i could afford to go to Slimming World and do their plan. I lost ten stone. Husband had a heart attack in 2006 and now has ischemic heart disease and emphesema. (he smoked for 48 years) i gained 4 stone back when i became his carer. Because we were living on 40 pounds a week which had to pay for hospital appointments food, heating etc.

In the last 19 months i have lost over 3 and a half stone of what i put back on. Im still DHs carer but hes now pension age so gets more financial help.

Every time i gained a lot of weight lack of money was a big factor. So you get judged for being poor AND being overweight which really fucks up your self esteem And having self esteem and confidence is something you need to tackle a task like this.

People not seing the bigger picture is the reason i get so annoyed on threads about weight.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 16:57

Im 41 btw Im not in my 60s

King1982 · 29/04/2015 17:24

I still think people will benefit from education. Plus It's free to exercise, maybe if you had education regarding exercise at an early age, you wouldn't have put on weight or atleast maintained your weight. Maybe during the time you put on weight you were not exercising properly.

INickedAName · 29/04/2015 17:26

"So to advertise this product they need to show a slim/fit person....that their product works. They do this for both the male and female version of the advert so there is clearly no gender bias."

The male version isn't marketed as a weightless loss product and doesn't feature a slim man. To the females it's marketed as a weight loss meal replacement, words from the poster, on the male one I've seen, it's marketed as a protein product, there's no mention of weight loss on the male poster I've seen (I don't know if there's more than one version) and features a bulky muscley man.

So it seems for the women to beach body ready, they need to lose weight and slim down, for the men, they need to bulk up and be muscley. Sounds gender bias to me.

INickedAName · 29/04/2015 17:31

Someone recommended a programme on Netflix called "fed up" I watched it yesterday and it's very interesting, it explains why "eat less and excercise more" isn't a fix all solution.
I can't remember who recommended it but thank you.

INickedAName · 29/04/2015 17:44

Also Im a size 4 and my sister is a 20, I have had the comments that shovetheholly has mentioned and while it's upsetting sometimes, it's absolutey nothing compared to what my sister gets! I've never had anyone call me a shit mum because of my size, I've never had anyone tell me I'm a disgusting person, I've never had anyone spit on me in the street.
I'm more unhealthy than my sister, but because I'm small it seems more acceptable. So while I might get pissed off at being told to eat a burger, it upsets me much much more seeing my sister get so much shit thrown at her, by people who take one look at her and assume they know everything.

GingerCuddleMonster · 29/04/2015 17:51

the male one will be aimed at gaining muscle mass, becoming ripped and gaining a glorious six pack.

the female one will be about shredding weight leaning up and retaining lean muscle.

all it is, is diet whey protein as aposed to the high calorie whey protein to build muscle. Nothing majorly bad for you. You could probably eat two boiled eggs and a salad instead of the shake as a meal replacement or you can use it post work out for recovery and muscle repair.

Greysanderson · 29/04/2015 18:00

There are many threads on MN showing topless men (mainly celebs) and women talking about how good they look, pretty much all have them have been muscular just like the women's ad the male one aims for the ideal physical form.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 18:09

King .....i was on JSA back then. To excsercise i would have needed to buy excersise gear to do it in ALL THE MONEY WAS GOING ON WORKFARE AND TRYING TO LIVE FROM DAY TO DAY. And talking of excsersise gear how much do you pay for your sports bra......oh wait Hmm

At the sex chatline office i was working ten hour night shifts so had to sleep during the day so no chance to go to the gym. Small town with no gym open late plus i had to be in work by 5pm. And i wasnt sat on my arse waiting for men to call either. We actually had to run all over the building answering different phones.

I lost that ten stone really quickly A stone a month for seven months and just over a year to lose the final 3. A few stone in i collapsed at home I had developed gallstones and before you start two doctors AND my lovely surgeon told me it was due to losing it too quickly.

Ive been through a lot of pain and to hell and back to improve my health lived with fuck all money as well as cared for someone in ill health and you still want to take the fact that you find the sight of overweight people offensive out on me. WOW just WOW.

Well im very proud of what ive achieived and im actually considering leaving MN after being on here for four years because the crap on here regarding body shaming is reaching ridiculous proportions.

OTheHugeManatee · 29/04/2015 18:10

I think there is a conversation to be had about the marketing of physique to men. There was a cracking piece in Vice about this recently. It's just disingenuous to claim an equivalence though. Everyone feels like they have permission to comment on women's bodies, which are highly moralised no matter what we do, and while no doubt there are pressures on men they just aren't the same.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 18:11

And we still have to justify ourselves AFTER we have lost the weight to people who hate overweight people.

INicked Im so sorry for what your sister has been through. Abuse and being SPAT AT Being spat at is not only disgusting behaviour on the part of the perpatrator it is also assault.

Im sorry for what your sister has experienced but unfortunately not surprised. Thanks

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 18:31

Buffy i totally agree Some of the young men who work in the supermarkets and local shops near me are talking about how they have to bulk up and they seem to be feeling the pressure.

How do we even start to reverse this. Is it too late Sad

King1982 · 29/04/2015 18:37

Helena, I don't find overweight people offensive. I've not said that at all, so don't project.
When I talk about education it will hopefully help young people to understand their bodies. Instill exercise as regular and important part of life.
You know why you put on weight, plus you weren't exercising. So you also knew why you started losing weight.
I think that some people believe they are fat and that they will always be fat, without understanding what they are putting in their bodies or understanding the need for exercise.

GingerCuddleMonster · 29/04/2015 18:42

I don't think the image of fitness models is "unhealthy" personally. Most of these men or women will eat very clean diets and excersise. Surely that's what we want to promote, it's also not impossible to get those results in some form. It's hard work to become toned but it's not impossible, and its also not unhealthy. I rather see a fitness model than a malnourished or medically severely morbid obese model. those are both the unhealthy body types.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 18:46

Im SOOO glad im over 40 and really glad i never had DC. I would absolutely hate to be in my twenties now.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 18:48

King You said "there are too many overweight people around these days"

That sounds to me like they offend your eye.

It was an observation, which reflects that average weight and clothes sizes are going up, disproportionately to average height.
We won't know the full extent of the problem until our own generation are gone.
I'm definitely not offended by anyone's appearance.

HelenaDove · 29/04/2015 19:05

Im sorry King Perhaps i misunderstood. YY buffy Often the only food i could afford to eat 15 or so years ago was cheap carbs. It is a problem which needs tackling.

There will also be long term health consequences for people who have no choice but to use food banks. IMO the barriers are even worse now than they were 15 years ago.

Aurochs · 29/04/2015 20:21

Totally agree about the pressures on men too. The "ideal" for them is to be strong, mentally and physically, be able to take "banter", not be bothered by anything, and that is one of the reasons the suicide rate in young men is so high.
