NUS and prostitution - confused...

They seem to haves passed a motion which holds anyone who thinks the Nordic model of managing prostitution is the preserve of right wing radical feminists.

I'm confused. I don't know much about sex work but I do know it is linked to trafficking of women and children and organised crime. I would be delighted if men were criminalised - but maybe I'm wrong?

Here's the motion but you might not be able to view it...

I read the research paper. It was qualitative research with a small self-selected sample and the numbers really can't be extrapolated from it.

Indeed. The NUS saying "it's just a job/career like any other" is at best naive and at worst harmful

So do lecturers put warnings on lecture notes now?

I did an art and war module nearly ten years ago and the lecturer said at the start of the module that we were going to see and talk about some deeply upsetting things, all of which had been chosen as necessary and important for our learning and development, and none of it gratuitous, and if any of us felt that we needed to talk to her privately about our responses then we should feel able to do so. It was the equivalent of a trigger warning, but she wouldn't have done it for every image or topic we discussed.

Someone thought bumsnet were a bunch of anti-choice radical feminists who team up with religious idiots? Never!

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 15:16

I guess radical feminists (i.e., you lot) don't agree with #7 on the first part of that list?

  1. The right of consenting adults to engage in sexual relations is of no business to anyone but the people involved.
lazocutor · 28/03/2015 15:19

"It says 6% of students resort to doing it. Doesn't that mean around 11-12% of female students, given how gendered it is?"

It's not as gendered as you think. Almost a third of active escorts on adultwork are male.

And what makes you think YOU have the right to decide whether other adult women should be able to make money by selling sex or not??

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 15:23

I'm just curious why radical feminists think they have the right to tell other women what they can and cannot do.

Eh? Confused

I think you are overreacting slightly lazocutor

And if anyone dares to have a different opinion of sexwork than radical feminists, then the SWERFy radfems will just lower themselves into childish name calling. I've seen radfems call punters "rapists" and call prostitutes who want decriminalisation "pimps"

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 15:30

A debate on sexwork.

For criminalisation we have a radical feminist politician and a religious idiot (Richard Lucas who has written some really vile material about homosexuals).

And against criminalisation we have 2 adults who actually sell sex.

I think we should listen to those who sell or have sold sex. Radfems and religious nutters can go themselves.

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 15:37
  1. Why is radfem an insult?
  1. Not everyone here is a radfem

But do carry on.

Ubik1 · 28/03/2015 15:39

Lazocutor you are welcome to your opinion of course.

My opinion is different. I am neither a religious nut job - I'm agnostic- nor a radical feminist.

I just done think prostitution should be spun as a viable occupation for anyone. I think people should be helped out of it. I think punters should be fined and banned from the area.

That's not radical. Believe me.
