NUS and prostitution - confused...

They seem to haves passed a motion which holds anyone who thinks the Nordic model of managing prostitution is the preserve of right wing radical feminists.

I'm confused. I don't know much about sex work but I do know it is linked to trafficking of women and children and organised crime. I would be delighted if men were criminalised - but maybe I'm wrong?

Here's the motion but you might not be able to view it...

Rhoda Grant must have been in contact with a lot of churches just before the consultation period. At the time a lot of churches showed some anti-sexwork TV programme to its Christians (Nefarious or something), and for most (or all?) of them this TV show is their only source of knowledge on sexwork. Combine that with the fact they are already opposed to fornification and homosexual sex then of course they are going to support a law against prostitution.

You had no difficulty finding an 8 year old link from another part of the forum but this was beyond you?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 29/03/2015 00:41

What the fuck is fornification?

And we've already shown that the Rhoda Grant only spoke to church groups is wrong.

In fact, why am I bothering?

StillLostAtTheStation · 29/03/2015 00:42

And if you had bothered to open my earlier link you would have seen by far the larger number of organisations which supported her were not religious.

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 00:46

That isn't all of them. There were like over 900 of them in total

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 00:47

"What the fuck is fornification?"

Unmarried people having sex. Christians (your allies) generally consider it a huge sin along with homosexuality.

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 00:50

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X3R6R_kny8XatookILb0ix9yEDi4HJLivSJV0-Yaaa0/

The responses were kept on RG's site but have now been removed. Here is a spreadsheet drawn up by someone to take notes

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 00:52

Whilst we can't see the actual responses, that person has made a note of which ones were the junk churchy ones and which ones were actually from prostitutes

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 00:55

Notice how churches and Christians support the bill, yet most researchers, academics, prostitutes and clients oppose it?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 29/03/2015 00:57

Unmarried people having sex.

That would be fornication then, you utter idiot.

And the responses linked to were actual responses to the consultation. Not some bloke with excel and too much time on his hands.

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 02:01

"And the responses linked to were actual responses to the consultation."

A small sample of responses you mean.

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 02:03

If we were deciding on a law on prostitution and more than 50% were in favour of it would you be happy for that law to advance? Even if it turned out a lot of the support came from churchy people and a lot of the opposition came from prostitutes?

YonicScrewdriver · 29/03/2015 02:05

I got all the way down to J before I found a church one. Otherwise it was rape crisis and other social support organisations...

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 02:06

Ah now I see what the file you linked to is about. Rhoda Grant actually wanted to bypass the public consultation, and those replies are from people who agree with her who also wanted to skip the actual consultation.

Those aren't replies from the actual public consultation. Utter idiot.

StillLostAtTheStation · 29/03/2015 02:06

The Scottish Episcopalian Church is under pressure from its clergy to be allowed to conduct same sex religious marriages.

www.thinkinganglicans.org.uk/archives/cat_scottish_episcopal_church.html

As I said I am an atheist but I have a lot of time for the Scottish Episcopalian church especially when Richard Holloway was bishop and occasionally attend services at St. Mary's (wonderful choir) I can't recall ever hearing a sermon in that church condemning fornicators or sodomites.

The opposition from church groups has nothing to do with hating sinners. There is common ground amongst feminist women, decent men and Christians here.

YonicScrewdriver · 29/03/2015 02:07

Nope. One from the IUSW in there, if you actually read it...

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 02:09

That file is just people writing in to say whether they think a public consultation should go ahead or not. It's not responses from the actual consultation.

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 02:10

"There is common ground amongst feminists and Christians."

Yup. It's called bigotry.

But this was wrong then, wasn't it?

"and those replies are from people who agree with her "

lazocuter · 29/03/2015 02:15

Why has bumsnet made my pics tiny?

YonicScrewdriver · 29/03/2015 02:15

As was your statement about shop work being riskier than prostitution.

Bored now.
