This is the 17th incarnation of the Feminist Pub!

Here be goats, cannons and chat on feminism and related themes. Also snacks. And booze, copious booze.

Welcome!

Was the suffragettes programme good? I plan to watch it in the morning.

INickedAName · 25/02/2015 22:54

I missed it cosmic, I'm hoping it's on Iplayer so I can watch it tomorrow.

EBearhug · 25/02/2015 23:19

It is on iPlayer and it's worth watching - www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0544j0j/suffragettes-forever-the-story-of-women-and-power-episode-1

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 26/02/2015 00:02

Catching up on episode 5 of wolf hall. Avoiding MN till I've seen episode 6!

Final Wolf Hall superb. Actress who plays Anne - Claire Foy - and in fact all of them wonderful. Final shot ...

OublietteBravo · 26/02/2015 07:48

FFS - just checked my email (all-day meeting yesterday, so a bit behind). Useless secretary is supposed to be finding a date for my next big meeting with all my key stakeholders. She's asked the most senior stakeholder if he can move his holiday Shock (unsurprisingly the answer was no). So new date found, and she's asked one of the other stakeholders to move a meeting that doesn't actually clash with the timing of my meeting. Looks like I have some bridge-building and apologising to do before I can get on with my day
Really, how difficult is it to organise a meeting with 3 sub-sets if people: whole meeting, 1st hour, final 2.5 hours?

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/02/2015 07:56

I'm going to try to hide out in here for a bit.

oub - ouch! I hate it when other people make mistakes and you have to grovel for them.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 26/02/2015 08:20

Lalala not listening about wolf hall Grin have booted up the fall of Anne Boleyn to read after episode 6

My feminist rage for today. I have a black eye. Well, a purple eye. It actually looks like artfully applied purple eyeshadow! Smile

Said black eye was acquired in karate class when I blocked a punch with my face rather than using my arm or getting out of the way. A poor choice of technique, on reflection! Grin

As such, I'm quite proud of my shiner and would happily walk about showing it off.

But instead I feel compelled to hide it (by artfully applying actual purple eyeshadow to the other eye) because while NAPALT, there would certainly be a significant number of people whose first assumption on seeing it would not be that I am a martial artist, or even than I genuinely did walk into a door. And I certainly don't want anyone having thoughts like that, however wrong or however fleeting, about my lovely DH.

Bah, fuck the patriarchy and a society where DV is such a prolific problem that it is assumed (probably correctly) to be cause when any women shows visible bruising.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/02/2015 08:33

I've not seen Wolf Hall either. I keep avoiding 'spoilers' then reminding myself I am actually someone who researches this shit so I probably do know the ending just as well as anyone. Grin

annie - ouch!

That is annoying for you, but interesting, isn't it? In terms of how you see your body. I fell down the stairs the other week, and had a rather less obvious, but still fairly dramatic large black bruise over my arm, and I felt the same: must cover up. And I did notice people made quite a lot of DV 'jokes' - bizarrely, in a sort of 'ho ho, there is no man in your house, is your housemate beating you up' way. Most odd.

I am actually quite disturbed (in an interested way) but what you're pointing out.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:08

Grin at Wolf Hall spoilers.

Annie- that says a lot about how violence against women doesn't it.Sad Perhaps choose a different blocking option next time eh?Grin Very impressed you have sorted a class so quickly after moving.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 26/02/2015 09:24

They are spoilers! For example - how "naive" does the programme paint Jane Seymour is interpretation ...

Just marking my place again. I keep falling off and I like lurking.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 26/02/2015 09:43

I was very careful not to include spoilers, but I think we all know it doesn't end well for Anne Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:52

Ah Knickerful, yes, that kind of spoiler. I more meant the 'who dies, who lives, are there babies' type spoilers.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/02/2015 09:55

Oh, sure, I know there are spoilers like that. But I am actively trying to repress my knowledge of what happens to Anne, and to Cromwell. Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:57

Even I know what happens to Anne, and as previously mentioned my historical knowledge is woeful (to the extent that I was out of uni before I twigged the link between Henry VII and Elizabeth I Blush. I blame the National Curriculm. I spent the entire time learning about the Troubles, or the history of medicine or similar areas that make no sense without a more general understanding)

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:58

Henry VIII. Why autocorrect, why?

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 26/02/2015 10:13

Henry VIII + wives is perhaps a good way of introducing the idea - to children or anyone really - of 'woman as vessel/non-person' ...

INickedAName · 26/02/2015 10:50

annie I know exactly what you mean, in my younger days I had a bad fall after a few wines and injured my eye, it was swollen shut for a few days and bruised for a good while and I hated going out because I could feel people looking at me with pity. Those who asked what I'd done didn't believe me when I said I'd fallen. On the other hand my dsis told people her exp had pushed her when explaining a bruise on her arm and people laughed thinking she was joking.

Been watching the latest Jimmy Saville stuff on news and still can't get my head around and feel angry at how he was able to get away with so much.

I've just downloaded the suffragette programme to watch this afternoon and I'm waiting for a phone all about a job. Phone all yesterday was really positive and the manager has said that I'd be able to work within school hours and take unpaid leave during or reduce hours during school holidays if I can't find suitable childcare. They also said they would support me finishing my foundation degree and like that I've been out of the workplace for a while as it means I'm starting with a blank slate. It sounds way to good to be true so I'm not getting my hopes up too much but just the initial phone call yesterday has boosted my confidence massively.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/02/2015 10:56

Shhhh, penguins!

Fingers crossed, INicked. That sounds great.

AnnieLobeseder · 26/02/2015 10:58

Wow, INickedAName, that sound amazing!! I'm busy Mumsnetting writing an application for an amazing job this morning so please beam me some of those too-good-to-be-true lucky vibes this way!

kickassangel · 26/02/2015 11:40

I got stung by a bee in my temple once and I had a huge black eye as a result. It was our honeymoon! I had to keep artfully arranging my hair over it as we checked in at hotels. Smile

AnnieLobeseder · 26/02/2015 12:05

A bee gave you a black eye? Sorry, I'm giggling at that, though I bet it hurt like crazy!
